Damn - it's the weekend and it's warm. AIBU to think this will lead to further restrictions

Because some people will be fed up of their house and will go to the park

Or the beach
Or congregate in large groups
Or take their car on long journeys to places of beauty

I think this weekend is going to see guidance severely broken because of the weather - and this will lead to a crackdown

Bring on April showers

The state knows more will die if there is no exercise so it is almost mandated that you go out every day and exercise which is of course very wise.

Of course it's not almost mandated, don't be so bloody ridiculous. There is absolutely no requirement for people to go out for exercise at all if they don't want to

astridstar · 04/04/2020 12:16

I live just off the seafront in a very small sleepy coastal town that's normally extremely quiet as there are two much larger and more famous seaside towns a few miles either side of us. Most people think we have a pebble beach which puts them off as one of the neighbouring towns has a well known sandy beach, the other is pebbly but is a party/shopping town. However it's the high foreshore is pebbly so we're only pebbly at high tide, we get very long low tides so we're actually lovely and sandy even when the tide is only half way out. Also we don't have any entertainments/shops that close to the beach, just an ice cream/food van at one end. I go to the beach most days with the dogs and it's normally really quiet, even before these strange times.

However I'll be avoiding it this weekend as it's been heaving the last 2 weekends. We have a very wide prom. The main offenders were large groups of young families with young children, often 4/6 adults with several children, wandering along the prom with the older children scooting around on bikes, scooters, and also quite a few on those motorised scooters, hoverboards and Segway's. Most not keeping anywhere near 2ms apart from others and not being supervised my their parents. I had to keep asking children not to say hello to my dogs as that meant they weren't 2m away from me. Judging by how packed the parking has been with few or no spaces (we don't have a car park by the seafront but it's a very wide road that you can easily park on and there is normally lots of spaces) and seeing families pile out of these cars, they've driven here. there's been all kinds of restrictions put on the neighbouring towns, especially re parking and they're both difficult to park in at the best of times, but all it seems to have done is push the tourists towards us. I did notice a police car sat at one of the local beach beauty points yesterday so will be interesting to see if anything is put in place this weekend.

Wotrewelookinat · 04/04/2020 12:19

I’m in Suffolk, cycling distance to the coast, beautiful weather here. Police are out in force along Felixstowe beach front and town centre.

RU562341 · 04/04/2020 12:19

Glad o report that all cars seem to be in place in my street, despite living near the coast.

Wheresthebeach · 04/04/2020 12:23

I’m hoping that the police will be out in force to keep it to the minimum. I agree that if there is widespread disobedience then the rules will be tightened. I really hope not but if some of the threads on here are anything to go by loads of people seem to think the rules don’t apply to them.

poppadopolis · 04/04/2020 12:24

Anyone know what further restrictions would entail?

@FriendToTheBitterLemon

A PP has nicely summarised the conditions in Spain upthread.

We are in France and it is broadly similar:

Exercise limited to 1hour a day alone and within 1km of your home address. Cycling purely for exercise is not allowed (but it's OK to cycle to the bakers)

A trip to the supermarket/baker/pharmacy is allowed but only one person in the car.

Other than food and pharmacies, nowhere is open.

You have to have a form with you every time you leave the house. You must tick the appropriate box stating the reason for your trip (no adding on "I just felt like a trip out" or other prohibited reasons.

The form must state the time you left home. You must use the nearest supermarket. The form has your address and you must carry ID.

135 euro fine for not sticking to the rules.
Possible 6 months in prison for a third offence.

Certainly concentrates the mind.

BirdandSparrow · 04/04/2020 12:30

Yes, I agree with @poppadopolis, (I'm the one in Spain I think she means). The most obvious tightening would be to make the exercise you can do stricter, or say you can take exercise.
In Spain, since the very beginning of lockdown, we have not been allowed to exercise, or even go for a walk. We can walk our dogs within a few metres of the house, but it's just that, so they can do have a wee/poo. It's not about taking them for a run.
The idea is to reduce activity as much as possible. You can only go out if it's essentail: to buy food, go to the pharmacy, go to work if you're in a category where that's allowed, buy office supplies, help an elderly or vulnerable person, go to the bank (but most are cash point only). Only one person in a car at a time unless specific force majeur circumstances.
I

BirdandSparrow · 04/04/2020 12:30

to say you can't take exercise

chomalungma · 04/04/2020 12:31

This is France from 2 weeks ago.
I don't know if it's changed

Lets hope not. Nowhere is open. Theres no point heading to beaches etc. Theres no toilets open I presume. No food and drinks. Nowhere to buy buckets and spades. Surely people won't be so cocky as if they are caught they will be on trouble. I'm sure some will be stupid though as you say.

Grown ups should be responsible. I guess if you live locally to the seafront a nice walk along the beach for your daily excercise would be tempting. I've ready tourist have gone to Cornwall

I was going away this weekend for a week. We have managed to move it to August. Although who knows what life will be in August! But my friend who booked through the same company got a less helpful home owner. She said to her two weeks ago she couldn't be refunded and was allowed to still go. My friend had to argue that they wouldn't be able to eat out or enjoy the area as it's all shut. Eventually they said she could go in the middle of winter or loose her money. So whilst I don't agree with it. I can imagine some people have been treated the same and decided to go sit in another house for a week. Although surely you can't travel.

I really hope people stay home.

Mrsfrumble · 04/04/2020 12:35

I noticed a lot more traffic when we took the children out for our walk yesterday, at about 7.30pm in London. I did wonder where everyone was driving to. Perhaps everyone has decided Friday evening is the time to drive around the block to keep their car batteries working?

We’ve been sticking to the streets for our walk as the local parks are too busy for my liking. I’m very careful to keep the children as close to me as possible, to make sure we walk single file or in the road if possible if we see someone coming the other way. Lots of others aren’t bothering though, which pisses me off. We were waiting to cross a busier-than-usual road last night, standing at the kerb and a man brushed right past us on the pavement instead of waiting for us to cross and be out of his way. Dick.

Bellaphant · 04/04/2020 12:36

We live in a normal residential suburb, but some 'nice' areas. We've been taking our walk once a day and have noticed two things: the first week, when it was sunny, there were definitely more people out walking than last week when it was very much coat weather, and two, very few people are stepping off of the path/even walking behind each other rather than two abreast when they pass, even though me and my partner do so all the time.

The weather change here was particularly noticeable this week, along with the drop in people out. We just walk the streets, dread to think what the park will be like...

QuaverQueen · 04/04/2020 12:40

I saw the media coverage about the weather and thought great, we could have a little BBQ in the garden, (well away from any neighbours), just some sausages or burgers.
DH is in the shielded group so this would be entertainment for him. It’s cold here today but tomorrow should be better.

In some ways I’d like them to increase the restrictions on those idiots going out on day trips and picnics but it will inevitably make life harder for those of us having to drive to work every day.

WeAllHaveWings · 04/04/2020 12:43

No fear up here in Scotland - pissing down here ☔ so cant even go out and mouch around in the garden. At least it will be quiet when I take the dog out later. 🤷‍♀️

Wehttam · 04/04/2020 12:44

Those going on little days out, pushing the boundaries a little, remember this, you could potentially be infecting someone else and cause a death, or the other way, you pick up something from your trip out you DO NOT WANT. Stay home unless you are exercising or food shopping.

Staypositivepeople · 04/04/2020 12:47

I really hope your wrong op x

SpokeTooSoon · 04/04/2020 12:48

Someone upthread commented on the lovely weather so of us are having.

I read a column in a newspaper this week that described the weather as having comic timing. So true. I am sitting in my garden in a T-shirt and sunglasses right now thinking my forehead is burning!

BananaChocolateLump · 04/04/2020 12:50

I hope everyone does go out and then the restrictions tighten, maybe then they'll realise the seriousness when we have the army patrolling the streets!

Fucking idiots.

knittingaddict · 04/04/2020 12:51

We will be going for a walk....but we live in a small flat with no green space or communal space.
I know everyone is entitled to get out and exercise but I have noticed a few people on my social media that have driven to beaches etc when they have good size gardens.
When tighter restrictions are brought in it won’t be those people that suffer, it will be children stuck in flats and homes with no outside space sad

eaudeunaturale

I agree. My daughter, a single parent to two primary aged children, lives in a flat with no outside space at all. I will be so worried and completely furious if thoughtless idiots cause stricter restrictions.

Lynda07 · 04/04/2020 12:52

People with gardens can barbecue their dinner if they have food :-). Not much fun for anyone else though the daily walk will be more pleasant.

Poetryinaction · 04/04/2020 13:16

Or you could look out the window and think 'great, sunshine, that will raise moods, get people in their gardens, help fruit and veg to grow'.
Must we always look for the negative in everything?

MintyMabel · 04/04/2020 13:27

but with fewer chocolate oranges.

Not in this house 😄

SauvignonBlanche · 04/04/2020 13:40

Really fancy a chocolate orange now but I’ve already been to the shop. Sad

Madein1995 · 04/04/2020 13:51

I so hope you're wrong. The papers are saying the lockdown could be relaxed in a few weeks, If people keep obeying the rules. I think the key thing to remember is the deaths that were hearing each day, happened at least 5days ago so isn't a true reflection, and while every single one of those deaths is a tragedy, the majority of people who get this virus live. That isn't to try and minimise the situation or to promote all going out or herd immunity - but all the news and statistics are doom and gloom. You can twist statistics any way you want for eg. Saying 40% people unemployed means that 60% aren't unemployed. It's all about how you listen.

On a personal level I thi k most people are abiding by the rules. The reason for deaths etc isn't Bert driving 5miles to walk on a beach. It's open borders which should have been closed a lot earlier, lack of testing not just of NHS staff but if people returning to UK (months ago), a delay in isolation (again, isolation for people returning should've happened earlier as well as that for the elderly and severely vulnerable), lack of proper PPE, lack of trained staff etc. That's the real culprit. As well as the cruel meat markets of course.

We have to remember this is a lot of restriction. This weekend the Queen will address the nation, for the 4th time for bad news and the previous 3 times have been about wars. People aren't used to this level. We've been cooped up 2 weeks now and it's getting to people. MH is suffering, people's jobs, trying to wrangle kids and 2ork, worries about finances, the world is currently a scary place and there's a lot of uncertainty. These restrictions are new to many people, and I also imagine many are wondering how long this shit shower will last. Because they can't keep this up for the next 18 months. It's not sustainable and I imagine people will kick off

Madein1995 · 04/04/2020 13:55

Also restricting traffic is idiotic. No idea what on earth London is thinking reducing the tube. Its the same round here, reduced buses equals busier buses so distancing is tricky. Am currently going in office 2x week to check emails etc, which I have to do (am technically a keyworker) and I've no option bar public transport. Making things trickier for people to get to work is just a means of control, simple as that.
