Damn - it's the weekend and it's warm. AIBU to think this will lead to further restrictions

Because some people will be fed up of their house and will go to the park

Or the beach
Or congregate in large groups
Or take their car on long journeys to places of beauty

I think this weekend is going to see guidance severely broken because of the weather - and this will lead to a crackdown

Bring on April showers

I live in a flat and near to a pretty large park and as a flat dweller it's really not a hardship.

The park is open but the playground, basketball court thing and apparatus stations are not. Big red signs up and a sign saying the park is for exercise and not sitting to eat and drink. Clear as day.

I go for my two laps around it every day for my daily mental 'lift' (as early or late as possible depending on shifts) and most people are adhering to social distancing. Each time though there have been groups of men exercising at the stations, every time despite the signs. I doubt they are sanitising it after. A man and his son walked right past the sign into the basketball court too. So there are always some that don't give a fuck or think it doesn't apply to them.

Although another large FB group for women I'm in has the same old 'but I just took little Sarah for a walk, we did stop for a picnic but didn't touch anyone etc etc'. Everyone missing the point that if EVERYONE applied that thinking there would be no point in isolating.

BirdandSparrow · 04/04/2020 09:39

It's part of the problem with allowing exercise. It means people interpret it to suit them. And other people take the piss. And then there are more people out so it emboldens others and then suddenly there are more.

In Spain we can't go out for a walk and can only walk dogs within a few metres of our houses. It's enforced with olice/drones/fines. We've been specifically told that anyone trying to go to their second home over Easter will be stopped and fined/arrested.

Schools are not open at all, even for key workers. All this reduces even further the need to be out. I'm not saying it's ideal, but the lighter touch your lockdown is, the less effective it is because there will always be some who don't comply.

I think keep schools open even partly, and allowing exercise will prove to have been a mistake. There are graphs in the FT that show compliance for retail and leisure (amount of people going shopping etc) is very much reduced and going to parks etc is much less complied with and the reason is that you basically CAN'T go to shops except food shops, but you aren't being stopped from going to parks, so people keep going. Advise isn't enough when you're talking about a whole country.

Eaudeunaturale · 04/04/2020 09:42

We will be going for a walk....but we live in a small flat with no green space or communal space.
I know everyone is entitled to get out and exercise but I have noticed a few people on my social media that have driven to beaches etc when they have good size gardens.
When tighter restrictions are brought in it won’t be those people that suffer, it will be children stuck in flats and homes with no outside space Sad

CinderellasSecrets · 04/04/2020 09:43

I live in a flat that heats up like a fish bowl in the summer, opening windows doesn't help bring the temperature down at all, with no garden or balcony, I have a 4 year old and a baby and I cannot tolerate the heat, i'm very prone to overheating, fainting, being sick, migraines etc. No matter how much water I drinknive always been like it from very young. I am absolutely petrified of having to be stuck in here in the summer because people cant listen to the guidelines its giving me panic attacks just thinking about it and I know it will make my mental health even worse and I've already been suicidal. (I was suicidal before lockdown, then lockdown meant all support was basically withdrawn so things are already shit.)

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/04/2020 09:45

Our local huge park was closed to cars (20 mph perimeter road) early on, and more recently, to cyclists, since they were whizzing along so close to each other.

I hope to goodness they won’t close it altogether. So far people are keeping their distance and it’s always been possible to stay well away from others.

There are masses of flats close by and it’s the only open space anywhere near for people with no garden.

welldonejean · 04/04/2020 09:47

@Unihorn totally agree!! Lots of people doing shopping before weekend, or working etc.

Ethelswith · 04/04/2020 09:51

If the weather forecast for Easter weekend is as good as the weather this weekend, and if there is too much activity this weekend, I expect there will be enforced 'do not travel' restrictions for Easter, and several days before. They cannot then lift them, because that would be interpreted as a loosening and that genie won't go back in the bottle.

Someone I know works in an ICU and is due to be having her first complete day off in 3 weeks this weekend. He's likely to be able to get outside and recharge a bit with the current levels of restriction. Just think how shit it would be for people like her whose rare day off is next weekend or onwards if actions this weekend mean the outdoors is closed as it is in say Spain

FriendToTheBitterLemon · 04/04/2020 09:52

Anyone know what further restrictions would entail?

OldLace · 04/04/2020 09:54

Yes!
We've been 'warned' clearly by Govt - specifically about this weekend.
Lots of people will think they are the 'exception' and break the Rules.
I've family down south, in their 70's planning family bar-b-ques /trips.
I want to shout at them - I am disabled, single parent, with two disabled kids, in a remote village, no transport. The childrens other parent is 50 miles away, male overweight, mid 50's with asthma.
It's really difficult but we are sticking to the Rules, for us and others.
Even if none of us 'get it' / 'get it badly' someone will, and even if you dont consider that, lockdown will be tighter / longer if you act like a selfish prat and go for your unnecessary drive / meet up / bar-b-que.
Aaargh!!!

Stellamboscha · 04/04/2020 09:55

I live close to Richmond Park which is now closed to traffic and cyclists but judging by the huge numbers of extra cars driving past even know will be full of walkers today, so would not be at all surprised if it is closed to pedestrians next.

And re the 'essential trio' to Pets At Home to buy a certain brand of dog food -here is a very creative, but breathtakingly selfish example of the rules only applying to others Angry

FlyingPandas · 04/04/2020 10:02

Further restrictions would presumably be along the lines of those in Spain as a pp has said- stringent limits as to how many metres away from home you can go and tougher fines.

I am not sure if we will reach a point where outside exercise is banned altogether but I guess it’s possible.

Problem is, there will always be people who try to get around set rules. It’s why there was a thriving black market during ww2, it’s how people in the USA managed to get hold of alcohol during the prohibition years, it’s human nature to an extent for a minority to kick against what some see as extreme measures and try to find a way around it. It seems (and is) hugely selfish but it has always happened and it always will.

Figmentofmyimagination · 04/04/2020 10:06

It’s easy to buy dog food online - although not necessarily the cheaper brands. This week I took delivery of a big multipack box of Lily’s kitchen which they are selling direct. Took 9 days so you have to be organised. Delivery was free.

OldLace · 04/04/2020 10:07

I know of someone in France who had his correct paperwork to leave the house but had mistakenly put the incorrect day's date on (he'd put the day after) and was turned around by the Police. I don't want to get to that stage because my Aunt Yvonne cant 'hold off' on her bar-be-que!

angieloumc · 04/04/2020 10:11

My brother is taking my mum for 'a drive and a walk' this weekend. She has cancer and refuses to contemplate sitting in her garden, I don't know why. I understand she's very ill and wants to be in the countryside but think they're both unreasonable and putting her (and others) at risk. Neither are speaking to me now as they think I'm a 'killjoy'.

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 04/04/2020 10:14

For the past few days I have seen more people out who simply are ignoring the 2 m rule. The people holding hands and walking side by side meaning there is no room on a wide path. The families out but not making way for people. The dogs off leash and running around to people. I stepped out onto the road to avoid two separate groups of young people yesterday and one group all had gloves and face masks. it was a wide footpath but they refuse to walk in single file when others come.

This is what annoys me. I run around my local park and when I pass other lone runners or walkers we always make sure to move to one side of the path to put distance between us, but couples walking together don't move to single file or make any effort to move to one side of the path. Also lots of people with children don't keep them close to them or tell them to move in when someone is coming towards them.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/04/2020 10:15

DH will be riding his motorbike down the A1 today.

He is actually going to a training course- for essential emergency work. They are staying in a hotel overnight- where they aren't allowed to leave their rooms, meals left outside their doors.

I'm actually a bit jealous... Even though it will be a dull weekend. But anyone seeing him could easily think he's off on a jolly.

Echobelly · 04/04/2020 10:19

Yup, my money's on people going to go on picnics, drive to beauty spots assuming for some reason it'll just be them.... then we'll all be on no-exercise lockdown. The moment I heard about the weekend temperatures I just thought 'Oh no!'

aphrodites · 04/04/2020 10:21

I'm hopeful that the vast, vast majority of people will stick to it, the news showing people who went to the beauty spots last time will hopefully have done the trick of peer pressure and shaming people into staying home!

Xenia · 04/04/2020 10:23

The state knows more will die if there is no exercise so it is almost mandated that you go out every day and exercise which is of course very wise. Just keep away from others when doing so,

it is pretty cold here in outer London. I was just out in the garden - not warm.

We just have to be tolerant of others. We don't know their situations. For example locally as a minority White London borough if you see people of different colours you might think - ah law breakers but in fact they might be step siblings living together.

Redwinestillfine · 04/04/2020 10:26

It definitely will. Noone think they're flouting the regulations. Every will 'just pop out to a quiet place with the family and maintain social distancing' until they get there and realise everyone else had the same idea. It's really simple. Stay home, save lives. Everyone thinks they're the exception it doesn't apply to though, that they're some special case. We're all in it together. If everyone does what they're supposed to we'll be fine. But they won't. So yes, more restrictions. Rant over.

Bunnylady54 · 04/04/2020 10:27

Parks near us have been closed. Even if your park is open, your kids shouldn’t be touching the play equipment

amusedbush · 04/04/2020 10:28

I went to the supermarket yesterday afternoon and I honestly couldn't believe how many cars were on the road - it was busier than my normal commute to work! I think people are starting to crack and yes, it will lead to stronger measures.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 04/04/2020 10:29

I walk with Nordic Walking poles, a handy metre+ long.
Quite useful for staving people off who try to get too close!

Trajectoryoflife · 04/04/2020 10:30

We have rain forecast here for tomorrow afternoon. I hope it comes. Heavy heavy splashy rain!

I live in a tourist destination and I do worry about the influx of selfish arseholes.

From what I’ve seen (which is a radius of about 2 miles via commuting to hospital and daily exercise) is that it’s VERY quiet so far.

Everyone I know is following guidelines. Smile

Greenpop21 · 04/04/2020 10:32

You can go to the park or beach if you live near one for your daily exercise! Otherwise stay in the garden or balcony or sit by an open window and you can still enjoy the weather.
