I watched interviews with Neil Ferguson maybe early February. He did know what was happening. His attitude was that it was inevitable and also that we should get the peak over before autumn, and try to control things when it was getting out of hand

MurrayTheMonk · 08/04/2020 16:07

That's terrible re that care home.
Although I'm shocked at the shared dorms in the first place! We have tie shared bathrooms at mine and I think that's archaic enough-but shared bedrooms is very old fashioned.

One of my residents is very very poorly with what I assume to be Corona-(still no tests available despite Jenny's claim last week they had been testing care home residents all along Hmm).

She will die I think. We are doing the best we can for her but it's not looking great. Unfortunately she also has a lot of challenging behaviour and because she is too lethargic to lash out with her fists as she normally does she has taken to spitting instead. So I got some lovely Corona spit in my eye this morning which wasn't great at all. Sad

pocketem · 08/04/2020 16:15

Yes, very hard to get tests for coronavirus in care homes. Do you at least have PPE @MurrayTheMonk ? Spit in the eye doesn't sound good 😒

CrunchyCarrot · 08/04/2020 16:19

Murray Really don't know what to say. You are doing such a great job in terrible circumstances. Flowers

MurrayTheMonk · 08/04/2020 16:23

I'm not good with spit. Anything else I can manage no bother-but I'm a bit Grossed out by spit... and you can't disinfect your eye I suppose 🤷🏽‍♀️🤮

MurrayTheMonk · 08/04/2020 16:26

PPE-we have masks to last until Monday, by when I hope we will have received some more from our head office-they ordered some centrally ages ago that haven't come yet. Gloves for another week and some aprons we got given from a local schools kitchen. And that's it - but then that's all we ever have (only not usually worried about quantities to this degree of course).

Quartz2208 · 08/04/2020 16:27

Hopefully this is the peak Spain and Italy once they reached 900 or so plateaued with that. I think tomorrow will be key in seeing whether we are tracking with them or moving ahead. If we stablise it is a very good sign

LadyEloise · 08/04/2020 16:30

MurraytheMonk
I hope you can get tested as through the eyes are one way of getting infected with Covid19 as I'm sure you know.you and people like you are doing such a difficult job.
What really annoys me is the selfish stupid Irish people who went to Cheltenham knowing there were cases in the town and who have now returned and some have the virus. There are certain areas of Ireland where quite a few "horsey" people live and apparently they now have people suffering from Covid19. Personally I would not have allowed them to re enter the country for 14 days.
Our border control was too soft.

Keepdistance · 08/04/2020 16:33

That's awful about the spit!
My dd2 (4) is quite defiant and when she was ill 1st week of march it involved blowing raspberries at me and one all over my face. she was also spitting her water like a fountain out her mouth onto the carpet. Another day she had the door handle in her mouth. Now she doesn't normally do any of that. Imo strongly feel illness can affect some people's brain and reduce inhibitions. And I said at the time it's a bit like a zombie movie but they are not exactly trying to bite you.
I have noticed there have been several reports of people spitting at police etc (Though obviously it's not clear if they are actually infected.)

MurrayTheMonk · 08/04/2020 16:37

Don't think we've any chance of testing. Not NHS or critical, still don't get a look in.
I've lost two thirds of my staff team at points since the 17th March when we had our first suspected case-half of them were probably fine-just normal coughs and colds or would have got better quicker than the 14 days and been able to get back to work if we could have had them tested. it's put the clients at risk due to understaffing and lack of experience or agency staff coming in and bring the virus from elsewhere (when we could even get them), and the staff still standing are exhausted (and so will make mistakes which puts people at risk in different ways). It's so frustrating!

Keepdistance · 08/04/2020 16:42

I'm not sure there were cases reported in Cheltenham beforehand. There was one in the county maybe. But the fact they never ever tested people who hadn't been to Italy etc means the data was never correct.
I'm pretty sure it was unlikely they picked it up from Cheltenham locals it would have been the mass gathering effect where people travelled from whole UK including using public transport.
Same with the football match which was I imagine the Spanish fans.

But yes as we knew that there was transmission really nowhere in uk was safe.

LadyEloise · 08/04/2020 16:45

To my uncertain knowledge there were cases in Cheltenham hence my anger at the time.
MurrayrheMonk that is just dreadful for you and your colleagues.

Noideareally2 · 08/04/2020 16:53

Everyone on here was very clear at half term, about what would happen, so no, noone can say it was not predictable. I'm assuming not everyone on this thread is a rocket scientist either.

middleager · 08/04/2020 16:57

Murray I don't know what to say other than you deserve a medal Flowers

CrunchyCarrot · 08/04/2020 17:04

I have re-done the Italy vs UK deaths chart to make it (hopefully?) a bit clearer to understand and not as long!

littledrummergirl · 08/04/2020 17:22

As far as I remember there were no cases in Cheltenham before the races(I'm in the county) - there are some now though, db included. He is just one of many who had to work surrounded by the extra idiots who travelled for it. It should never have gone ahead.

WhyNotMe40 · 08/04/2020 17:29

There were cases elsewhere in Gloucestershire but not in Cheltenham. Gloucester had a Tesco delivery driver who carried on working, and there were a couple of isolated cases elsewhere.

IwantKoalas · 08/04/2020 17:50

SARS.. Washing your nose out with soap because postman spoke to you

HeIenaDove · 08/04/2020 17:59

Brilliant post at 12.16 @RedToothBrush Totally agree.

YangShanPo · 08/04/2020 18:24

crunchycarrot thanks for the updated chart it seems we are now 1000 cases ahead of Italy at the same point, does this mean there is a good chance we will be even further ahead by the time we reach the point they are now with over 13,000 cases?

JellyFishSquish · 08/04/2020 18:28

Same here, re:RedToothBrush post

Random18 · 08/04/2020 18:38

I was looking at Worldometer.

According to there the UK has tested 4155 / 1million population

Germany has tested 10962 / 1 million population.

Surely that can't be right? Germany are doing what 100000 tests a day?

I know they have a larger population but I thought the gap between UK and Germany would be bigger.

YangShanPo · 08/04/2020 18:40

Just seen on worldometer that Italy has over 17,000 deaths today so if we carry on as we are we could have more than that at the same point.

IwantKoalas · 08/04/2020 18:53

Are we not going to have half a million or so by the end of this

YangShanPo · 08/04/2020 18:56

The half a million was supposed to be if we did not take any measures to control the spread.
