I’ve filled in the shielding form. I don’t remember the bit about consenting to share the information with the supermarket. Did anyone get an email confirmation? I’ve heard nothing at all and did it last Tuesday.

nearlyretired · 30/03/2020 15:44

Good luck with the Morrison's box - we had one booked and confirmed for yesterday which didn't arrive. Nothing from Morrison's to say it wouldn't be delivered. As a result I had to go out shopping today. Might try them again but feel they can't be relied on to deliver.

T1redmum1 · 30/03/2020 15:57

That’s lovely. Do you mind me asking how you register? I have a disabled daughter. Her paediatrician called me last week to say he considers her to be extremely vulnerable, and we should start shielding. But we haven’t received a letter, so I can’t log her on the Government website

hamsterchump · 30/03/2020 16:00

The boxes on here sound good, be glad you didn't get the box intended for my 6 year old nephew which contained:-
Oats
1 pint of milk
Pasta
3 microwave meals
5 Litres of double strength squash (yes 5 litres, not a typo I checked)
7 coffee sachets (for a 6 year old, might perk him up a bit I suppose)
I tin of soup
2 chocolate bars
1 sponge pudding
1 packet of super noodles
6 apples

So I suppose its gruel for breakfast, 1 coffee with milk a day, plain pasta or noodles for lunch and an apple (Apples get Sundays off for good behaviour) then half a microwave meal a day for 6 day's dinner and then the tin of soup on Sunday. Oh and you get a spoonful of sponge pudding for dessert or half a chocolate bar but at least you've got just under a litre of undiluted, double strength squash to keep your morale up 🤣

BiBiBirdie · 30/03/2020 16:03

I did. They said they had given the "appropriate" list of those requiring a flu jab. I pointed out he had one. They asked did we get called to have one or make a request. I said we made a request because you make us request every sodding year. The answer was that was my answer of if he was added or DP.
They're beyond useless but the others surgery nearby is even worse.

BraveLittleDragon · 30/03/2020 16:03

@hamsterchump Is that a FSM box or a shielding box?

hamsterchump · 30/03/2020 16:08

@BraveLittleDragon Shielding box as he has severe asthma. Also their whole household is meant to shield for 12 weeks because you obviously can't socially isolate yourself from your 6 year old Autistic son. They got a different letter saying they should all shield for 12 weeks and so naively thought the box might be for all of them, and so they are unsurprisingly pissed off that it's not even enough for the vulnerable person it's meant for/any other person! Even if these boxes are completely generic, and not taking into account age or anything else, who is that one supposed to feed?

alloutoffucks · 30/03/2020 16:09

@T1redmum1 There is a list on yougov.uk website about who is considered by the government to be extremely vulnerable. A consultant could still use those words, but the person might not be ill enough to meet the criteria. Most UK charity websites for the various conditions also have more detailed information. So for example it can be down to what medication you are on.
Everyone should get a text and then letter, but if you don't contact your GP. The information originally comes from your GP records I believe.

BiologyIsReal · 30/03/2020 16:11

Truly I despair. Just for one moment think what is happening. From a standing start (whether late or not is debatable) this country has gone from zero to 20,000 extra medics/nurses, 750,000 volunteers, turning centres like Excel into hospitals, harnessing businesses to provide medical equipment and to turning their production lines into factories for producing the stuff, trying like hell to get millions of pieces of PPE out UK wide, working day and night to find/invent testing kits, treatments and vaccines, putting safety nets in place for the vast majority of businesses and workers and many (not all) self employed, sorting out 1.5m of our most vulnerable citizens for food parcels and helplines, mobilising the military, councils and the public as organisers of distribution lines....I could go on....

Yes, it is right that government is questioned over how much, what, when how etc. but bloody hell can we have a break from this endless whinging? I happened to have watched quite a bit of telly today and what did I see? The richest country on earth unable to facilitate PPE for their medical staff and putting up field hospitals in Central Park, every single healthcare system - even ones higher funded than ours - swamped and unable to cope - a pandemic like this has precious little to do with the percentage of GDP spent on healthcare - you could have spent half a country's GDP over the last decade on health and still be overwhelmed. Some wealthy countries not even attempting to put in place social distancing.

I used to think Mumsnet was a great supportive place - and in most cases it still is - but I am really turned off by the attitude of a minority and wonder just how much the healthy moaning minnies are themselves doing to help their country in this time of need.
I am not talking just about this thread to make it clear, but many threads.

GinnyStrupac · 30/03/2020 16:11

There seems to be some confusion. Most disabled and vulnerable people won't be entitled to the government administered food parcel referred to in the OP. This is restricted to the most vulnerable only - in this case it means those with the limited number of medical conditions listed on gov.uk/coronavirus as making someone extremely vulnerable to Covid-19. It's worth checking the list if you have not had a letter or email by today, and then contacting your GP if your medical condition is on it. Our family member is vulnerable and we have been strongly advised to shield them for at least 12 weeks, but despite this they are not on the list. We are managing so far and very glad the most vulnerable are getting help.

LEELULUMPKIN · 30/03/2020 16:11

All of the miserable sods whinging about it coming from their tax. Isn't that the whole bloody point of a welfare state?

I paid tax from the age of 16 for twenty years and DH is also taxed at the higher rate. If that is paying for these boxes, then well done to whoever has organised.

Those of you moaning that you are paying for it, yes you are but when flights resume you are totally free to join the all those poor people in India on the news last night in India who cannot get food or water right now.

Count your sodding blessings!

BraveLittleDragon · 30/03/2020 16:12

@hamsterchump Shit. That's terrible. Are there any other schemes in their area? Council, school, Covid group etc?

Ostanovka · 30/03/2020 16:15

Really pleased people are getting these boxes, fantastic to have them ready so quickly.

alloutoffucks · 30/03/2020 16:16

@BiBiBirdie This is much narrower than requiring the flu jab.

MadamFlutterby · 30/03/2020 16:17

Do you need to register for a box and, if so, where. My DM is vulnerable, in her eighties, lives alone and a 2 hrs journey from me.

TildaKauskumholm · 30/03/2020 16:18

Great! I think the government are doing an amazing job given the circumstances.

hamsterchump · 30/03/2020 16:18

@BraveLittleDragon My SIL's dad has done them a shop and brought it to them. I don't know why there is such a difference between what they got and what others on here were given, they are in Cornwall if that makes a difference.

1forsorrow · 30/03/2020 16:20

nearlyretired, so sorry your Morrisons box didn't arrive. I'm really pleased with mine, got all the stuff I would say is a priority e.g. milk bread fresh meat. With a few bits from the cupboard it will definitely do me for a week. Have you contacted them?

I didn't realise mine had arrived, it was sitting at the front door when my prescription med arrived. I did think anyone could have taken it, although they'd have to be strong to run off with it as it was heavy.

I think getting food is such a worry if you can't go out. Even with tins in the cupboard so we won't starve you want a bit of fresh stuff.

T1redmum1 · 30/03/2020 16:23

Thanks @alloutoffucks. Her consultant told us to expect a letter last week, but it’s not arrived yet. We’re ok for food at the moment, so I’ll give it until the end of the week before chasing

alloutoffucks · 30/03/2020 16:23

@MadamFlutterby Sadly that is not enough. You have to have specific medical conditions that mean you are at high risk of dying from this virus.
But I know some Age Concerns can help or know of local schemes. I would contact them.

BiBiBirdie · 30/03/2020 16:25

@alloutoffucks he has COPD and Restricted airway syndrome.

BraveLittleDragon · 30/03/2020 16:28

@MadamFlutterby Our local council are doing boxes (separate to the Government boxes) for anyone over 70 so it is worth checking what they are doing. Age Concern are also doing boxes, as are our Mutual Aid group and food banks - do check all those options.

@hamsterchump Hopefully that can keep them going for a while - can they speak to their GP about it? Will they get another box this week (as a poster above mentioned she was told she will get one tomorrow)? That seems really really poor to feed a family for a week (before anyone flames me, go and read the contents of the box please). The other option is local farms are doing fruit and veg boxes - is that something they could afford?

alloutoffucks · 30/03/2020 16:32

@BiBiBirdie Look at the British Lung Foundation website. "Just" having COPD is not enough, no idea about restricted airway syndrome. But it is for the most vulnerable group within COPD patients. The website shows the more detailed criteria being used.

Nonotmenori · 30/03/2020 16:46

Ffs Xenia. I actually work for the company who provides these boxes and are delivering them out across the country. I am also a worker who pays tax every single month. I am also extremely vulnerable as I am currently in the middle of chemo treatments for my breast cancer. I was made like millions of us to go on furlough on Friday without any form of notice, again, like millions of us Please get off your high pony. We are in desperate times right now and honestly people like you with your pathetic, unhelpful , bitchy comments made me sick.

Ps I didn't get a letter or a box, but you're not seeing me moaning about any of it.

hotMenopause · 30/03/2020 17:10

I got a vegetarian Morrison’s box today and was really pleased with it . One tip is to make sure you open what looks like a lot of packaging as that is where the chilled stuff is ! I nearly didn’t and would have thrown away milk, butter , quorn mince and quorn meat, fresh pasta sauce, vegan sausages and a vegetarian pastie , I think that was all of the chilled stuff. Really pleased that the government is sorting out food boxes for the ones that really need it but well done Morrison’s too for helping people who can’t leave the house with a box of necessities.
