Did anyone receive a food package today

Jesus Christ could come down to earth and hand them a food parcel and they would find something to whine about

B..b..but I don't want my children (who go to Our Lady of Pity RC primary) to be exposed to RELIGION! Waaaah!

Kraejka · 30/03/2020 13:52

It is really, really, shitty behaviour to take limited food stocks from those with a medical need for them away from them - but the general population think it's fair game at the moment.

Yes, I know. One of my best friends has been left with next to nothing because of this.

BraveLittleDragon · 30/03/2020 13:52

@BarbaraofSeville You don't seem to realise that "pissing about with allergies" is what keeps some people alive, as will be getting a food package.

So yes - for those with severe allergies that are on the list and don't have any other option - they need to "piss about with allergies".

From someone who has spent 56 days in intensive care in the last year due to fucking allergies. 6 intubations. Maybe 40 trips to A and E (the last place anyone wants to be right now).

Strangely enough - the allergies are the reason I am on the list - they cause severe asthma - the link between severe asthma and allergies is very strong, so I will not be the only one.

ofwarren · 30/03/2020 13:54

I cant believe some people moaning about vulnerable people receiving this!
My son is shielded because of a liver transplant and my husband DOES pay tax and lots of it thanks very much.
We aren't allowed to leave the house because he's shielded downstairs and me and my other son are in quarantine upstairs with what our GP says is coronavirus.
How dare I accept food to feed my kids...

BarbaraofSeville · 30/03/2020 13:57

I meant while they ask people if they have allergies and make arrangements to cater for them. That will add days of delay into the system when some people have no food now.

If you have an allergy, you will know not to eat the food. Most people do not so the quickest thing to do is to send the food to everyone with a note saying let us know about any allergies and we'll sort it out. Not make people wait while they conduct an allergy survey to make sure they don't supply unsuitable food to a minority.

The box contains meat and fish too - maybe they should have introduced further delays while they checked who was vegetarian or asked people which biscuits they liked best?

PestymcPestFace · 30/03/2020 13:59

If you are in the shielded group and need food, get onto your local council.

They are doing these boxes. Many started long before the Government kicked in.
Locally ours are taking donations, getting some freebies from the supermarkets and buying the rest. They are working with the local food bank.
The boxes are given free to the shielded group and those without money, they are £15 for others. They contain a much higher value.

They are being organised by the Community Events Officer.

@BarbaraofSeville Did you see what I could eat out of that box? That box would not last me the time it was meant to - that is why they need to swap allergy safe items in for those with allergies. These boxes are about sustaining nutrition - do you think people with allergies should just starve for half the week?

Being vegetarian and being provided with meat is as far as I am aware not life threatening to anyone - having severe allergies is a life threatening illness. I cannot believe you have just compared the two but it does show how uneducated you are about allergies.

thecatschampagne · 30/03/2020 14:02

@PestymcPestFace seeing they had flowers in them just made me a little emotional, such a lovely, human touch.

PaulGalico · 30/03/2020 14:04

I also cannot believe that some people are moaning about these box's - whether it is to do with allergies, future increase in tax or god - forbid chocolate cereal. It is a much needed initiative.

GinnyStrupac · 30/03/2020 14:05

I don't even like Fig Rolls but I quite fancy one now if anyone can spare one!

I think we need a quick whip round to send a parcel to one or two pps - just loads of sugary foods, sweeties, chocolate and fizzy pop - because they're obviously feeling rather sour. Wink

BarbaraofSeville · 30/03/2020 14:05

I know that allergies can kill people FFS. But the percentage of people with life threatening allergies is relatively small.

If they checked with everyone on the list if they had any needs, it would introduce a delay for everyone, some of which have little or no food today.

Which is why they've done it this way. If you've been supplied with unsuitable food, you tell them and they sort it out - it says that in the letter, presumably by giving you more food that you can eat. And you can eat your shortened list in the meantime.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 30/03/2020 14:07

I love that they have added Daffodils to those boxes.

What amazing people we have doing this.

If anyone is reading this who has volunteered or is some way involved.....

Thank you ♥

Egghead68 · 30/03/2020 14:09

Thank you @fivesecondrule.

PestymcPestFace · 30/03/2020 14:11

The flowers were donated by Aldi Grin

Round here, volunteers have phoned everyone on the shielded list to ask if they want a box. The first boxes were rather generic, now you can list allergies and they try their best to get stuff for you.

Have some of you thought to be the volunteers who do the phoning?
You can do it from home.

Contact your local council, TOWN COUNCIL

DarkDarkNight · 30/03/2020 14:11

I worry about people falling through the cracks. Elderly people who are quite frail but up to now haven’t needed carers so may not be on a council list. People who may not have internet access.

I hope everyone who needs this help can access it. It’s wonderful to see a scheme like this.

alloutoffucks · 30/03/2020 14:13

When you register, it asks if you have allergies.

BraveLittleDragon · 30/03/2020 14:14

@DarkDarkNight It's coming from the GP lists, not the Council lists I think - and all organisations are now allowed to share the lists as well.

thelikelylass · 30/03/2020 14:16

Yes there is a lot going on behind the scenes (part of this) so glad it is getting out to people.

TheQueef · 30/03/2020 14:17

I never knew you paid tax Xeni you should have mentioned it.

bobstersmum · 30/03/2020 14:18

My parents had one delivered this morning. They didn't request it, dad has lupus. They were so overwhelmed as they have been so anxious about running out of things.
My in laws are in Wales, and are more in need than my parents, they both are on the list but apparently Wales aren't doing it?

Intelinside57 · 30/03/2020 14:20

That photo of the boxes with flowers on top, I'm normally a tough nut but it moved me to tears. There is some real good in the world among the chaos.

I'm amazed that people are moaning that their box would have stuff in it that they're allergic to. It tells you what to do in the letter. No good deed goes unpunished sometimes.

GingerScallop · 30/03/2020 14:21

If they have no support network (one of the conditions for being on the list other than clinical needs which your folks obviously have), could you call the local council or talk to the care team to pass on a request?

BraveLittleDragon · 30/03/2020 14:21

@Intelinside57 I was not moaning - i was pointing out for allergies it does need to be addressed (in response to people saying it did not need to be).

The scheme asks you about allergies, the letter tells you what to do - it's important they are addressed.

alloutoffucks · 30/03/2020 14:22

@DarkDarkNight It is not for elderly frail people. It is only for people whose medical history means they have a high chance of dying if they get covoid 19.

DishingOutDone · 30/03/2020 14:23

I'm confused, where's the OP - why did the OP post? Are they unhappy with the box? Do they not want it?
