Today the door knocked and a man left a food package we asked who it’s from and they said the government my son is extremely high risk but we had no idea this was coming I will try post a pic of the letter that came with it

I got a box on Saturday morning. Very impressed by the huge effort that has gone into it and very grateful. The contents of mine are:
Apples
Satsumas
Carrots
Potatoes
Tin of mushy peas
Tinned tomatoes
Tinned tomato sauce
Spam
Tinned fish
Tomato soup
Baked beans
White sliced loaf
Long life milk
Rice crispies
Tea, coffee and shortbread
Pasta
Rice

I am vegetarian so left the meat/fish on my neighbour’s doorstep.

Xenia a little humility wouldn't go amiss. We all know you are a high earner - you've told us often enough and I'm sure your accountant ensures you only pay the minimum tax commensurate with your income. You're a lawyer not Mother Theresa and I suggest whatever support you think you need, you can afford to pay for while millions of others currently cannot.

Give your head a wobble.

rootsonshow · 30/03/2020 13:39

Xenia, what makes you think that the vulnerable at this time, cancer etc have not paid taxes or will not do in future.

Egghead68 · 30/03/2020 13:39

and @Xenia I pay many tens of thousands of income tax a year. Hmm

StrawberryTarts · 30/03/2020 13:39

What support do you need, Xenia?

I pay my taxes too and I’ll happily accept a tax rise to fund food parcels for extremely vulnerable people during a national crisis.

BraveLittleDragon · 30/03/2020 13:40

Brilliant, but there are going to be people who are on that list with severe allergies - I am on the list, but I don't need a food package as I am on the Sainsbury's list too (thankfully).

From the list posted above, I could only eat:

big bag of potatoes
2 x heinz tomato soup
1 tin tuna
1 tin corned beef
2 tins chopped tomatoes
2 x litres long life milk
bag oranges

So, those with severe allergies, who are relying on the boxes are actually going to really struggle in some cases. I do think there was a chance to tick an allergy box if you signed up though (maybe that was on Sainsbury's though, I cannot remember).

ClientQueen · 30/03/2020 13:40

@rootsonshow I'm one of them and worked since I was 13, never been unemployed! ConfusedGrin
That's including 10 years for the NHS... I think I can claim a food parcel

Xenia · 30/03/2020 13:40

I did say I was pleased people are getting the food funded by tax payers. Lots of us are working very hard at present including my son who delivers groceries and plenty of others have gone bust to fund things like these food parcels and presumably those whose lives are saved by it will be giving back big time through their direct and indirect taxes as net givers into the system over the next 20 years so perhaps it will call come out in the wash.

I saw a box online and it seemed to have some dreadful sugar cereal in it which is presumably designed to kill you not to nourish you.

JayDot500 · 30/03/2020 13:40

We also got soap

VanGoghsDog · 30/03/2020 13:41

I can't even begin to imagine my parents faces if they got a box of chocolate wheetos! :)

Luckily their local shop is delivering to them.

TeaLibrary · 30/03/2020 13:42

I think the government have done an amazing thing here. We all have a duty to try and protect those who are most vulnerable and protect the nhs

BarbaraofSeville · 30/03/2020 13:43

Well there's none in the shops so maybe all the corned beef was taken away further up the food chain to go in the food parcels? Only half joking. Looking at the list posted by Nettle I can see that nothing requires refrigeration, so if it is delivered to someone who does need it, it can safely be collected and passed on to someone else.

Irritatingly, we've got a load of veg that would go into a lovely corned beef hash if only we could get hold of some.

ofwarren · 30/03/2020 13:43

Ours has just come and wow!
I'm impressed!

Genevieva · 30/03/2020 13:43

I think this is an amazing initiative. They said the first deliveries would be generic and free because it is most important to get the deliveries to people. With time they hope to expand the service with more choice etc. Remember the delivery was brought to your door by a volunteer who wants to help keep your family safe. Enjoy :-)

ClientQueen · 30/03/2020 13:44

Food funded by tax payers... You mean I'm funding myself? I mean I would happily pay for the box, I just can't get food any other way
I pay for everything else including prescription charges, hospital parking, tax, NI, pension...

NettleTea · 30/03/2020 13:45

AND we have just had another delivery. something a bit like meals on wheels. 2 ready prepared fresh meals, a loaf of bread, 2 x yoghurts, 5 eggs 2 litres milk and a pack of butter

It says they will be back again on Wednesday with some more.....

The box seems to be centrally provided, this says its a food delivery company working with East Sussex County council

Pinkdelight3 · 30/03/2020 13:45

I saw a box online and it seemed to have some dreadful sugar cereal in it which is presumably designed to kill you not to nourish you.

Indeed, heaven forbid anyone vulnerable should have any pleasure. They should also substitute the fig rolls for gruel.

BraveLittleDragon · 30/03/2020 13:45

@Kraejka I can honestly tell you that situation with people "having allergies" is actually a lot worse - the general population, who are quite happy to claim they don't have allergies, are buying all the Free From Food now.

It is really, really, shitty behaviour to take limited food stocks from those with a medical need for them away from them - but the general population think it's fair game at the moment.

NettleTea · 30/03/2020 13:45

I forgot the first box also had shower gel and loo roll

Dodie66 · 30/03/2020 13:46

Anybody know what areas they are delivering in?
My DH is vunerable and registered last week. We are in hampshire

BarbaraofSeville · 30/03/2020 13:48

For the people moaning, do you think it would be better that very vulnerable people have no food while they piss about catering for allergies, dietary choices and pandering to the people who think that wheetos will kill them?

I suspect that they have gone to the big food manufacturers and asked to buy whatever they can spare quickly to make up the parcels that is a basic food allocation, and doesn't need refrigeration, a bit like the food selection offered by food banks.

I know it's not everyone's first choice of food, but in times like this, we have to accept that it is sometimes whatever is available, or nothing at all.

NettleTea · 30/03/2020 13:48

the kids cheered when they saw the wheetos

TheClootieDumplin · 30/03/2020 13:49

However don't thank the government - thank those of us who pay thousands in income tax and will have massive tax hikes next year to pay for it even though we are getting nothing now in terms of support

You really are a piece of work.

Do you really think they've looked at the tax people pay and have decided to only spend the tax from high earners?

And by the way there are people here who are likely worth way more than you but good manners prevents them from saying so.

GingerScallop · 30/03/2020 13:49

BiBiBirdie, are you sure you have been forgotten? It might be on the way as I doubt they can deliver to everyone on day one. I understand they have a database of the vulnerable but 600,000 will be missed. They have asked GPs to provide list to get to these so perhaps get in touch with your GP? And then see if you can register as suggested by others.

SuperLoud, think about what it's taken those in charge to put this together in such a short time. Sometimes life is easier when we learn to be grateful for the small even imperfect things.
I come from a country with 25 ICUs and less than 10 ventilators for 18 million people. Not your concern or fault I know but hear me out. If Corona gets/peaks there people can't even self isolate because most sell a few dollars' worth of stuff, buy food and then survive that day not knowing what they will eat the next day. No running water or electricity. Etc. They will either die by Corona or starvation or unproven remedies in desperation. There will be no govt package with or without allergenic foods. Foreign help won't come because they are busy with their own crises. I know we are not supposed to compare but perhaps this can give you the perspective to be grateful for a box in which 10% or 30% might be stuff you cannot eat but can give to others whilst you call your local council for assistance

fivesecondrule · 30/03/2020 13:49

Lol the people getting these boxes are shielding- they can't leave the house because if they do and they catch the disease they will probably need "a tax payer funded" bed in a "tax payer funded" hospital and be cared for by "a tax payer funded" nurse. Heaven forbid that it could be the case that most of them are "tax payers' themselves they just can't leave the house in case they get very ill at this moment in time.
