CFs literally panic buying freezers!

Stuffandnonsense100 · 21/03/2020 19:42

Found this out today - refrigeration shops are out of freezers due to people buying them to stock up on extra frozen stuff!

This is bananas! Who is doing this crazy shit?!

OP posts:
Hangoverstruggles · 21/03/2020 22:03

I bought one! From gumtree. Been thinking of getting a small chest one for ages as only have a small compartment in our fridge.

As a working family of 4 the ability to batch cook and actually keep some bread in is amazing!

I did by some extra bits when shopping in case we get sick and need simple meals to feed our young kids. What a selfish crazy bastard I am 🙄

Bluntness100 · 21/03/2020 22:03

The op is correct, it’s been reported in the press. People are indeed buying freezers so they can panic buy and strip shelves so other people who need it can’t get it.

I really hope this is over soon and these people can sit their staring at their freezers filled with months of food and their stacks of toilet rolls whilst paying off their credit card debit mournfully.

Karma is a bitch.

georgialondon · 21/03/2020 22:06

What @doesthisonework said.

Jerseygaly · 21/03/2020 22:08

We got one 2w ago so not really panic buying but genuinely thought we would be lock down by now.
I have asthma so trying to not go out for 12w.

I dont understand why the supermarkets dont separate warehouse delivery items from the store stuff.
It makes no sense as its ridiculous when getting deliveries there is so much missing when effectively you should be reserving it at least the night before.

We bought the freezer for freezing milk butter and bread. Cheese etc.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 21/03/2020 22:09

We have a small freezer in the kitchen and a large upright freezer in the garage. DH has a small freezer and small fridge in the garage for his fishing bait. A lot of people have freezers in garages so maybe people bought an extra one if they only had one in the house. Quite sensible really, some have to isolate for 12 weeks

GoodDogBellaBoo · 21/03/2020 22:10

Maybe people do more batch cooking which is very popular now, and need more space. Maybe their freezer was full of berries and fruit from last summer and they need more space for actual food (us). How do you know they are all CF’s? If you yourself don’t need a freezer, then don’t buy one.

Whataboutthismess · 21/03/2020 22:11

People who have been told to cocoon for up to twelve weeks ...
Elderly
Pregnant
Asthmatic
Heart Disease
Immunosuppressed
etc etc plus their carers.

Now not all of them will have bought or need a freezer. But the lack of sympathy for very scared vulnerable people is breathtaking.

This is an unprecedented world event.

There are three types of people imo

The vulnerable and anxious who are terrified.

The middle ground, usually healthy, young but sensible and taking all possible precautions.

The invincible who don't think they will get it and sure it's only a flu anyway. These are the most dangerous as they are the spreaders.

Everyone is dealing with it in their own way and buying a freezer is no more stupid than hoarding toilet roll or baby formula.

ffswhatnext · 21/03/2020 22:11

Of course if you have an icebox it’s wise to get something bigger.

People are trying to get freezers to store the excess they purposely bought. Meaning the rest of us who are sensible shoppers have no food cos it’s all gone.

One of the worst videos I’ve seen was from a nurse.
Exhausted. Finished work. The supermarket was empty.

When the shop is closed the next day you expect stock to run out at the end of the day. When the shops are open, you might walk into the first one and the bread has finished. You don’t walk into the store, every store day after day looking at empty shelves. And your not the only one there walking around confused.

Stores are delivering. They are hiring more drivers. There’s no need to buy extra anything. Just do your shop as normal.

11 weeks to go before I can leave the house whoop whoop

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 21/03/2020 22:15

Our freezer is half full of last years plum crop and fruit crumbles so not supermarket food

pjmask · 21/03/2020 22:18

Come on everybody - SOME people aren’t being CF. But why is it always impossible To accept on MN that a lot of people will Be?!

It's really not - Mumsnetters are very quick to label people as CFs. But your post is just too full of presumption even for them.

Frangipanini · 21/03/2020 22:20

Jesus, next we will be salting our meat as there are no freezers.

ffswhatnext · 21/03/2020 22:20

And over 100 sales a day in stores, not all will replacing a broken one or buying a bigger one to meet the household needs.
The staff probably here customers a lot talking about their bulk buying.

If arseholes can boast about buying baby milk as a viable option to milk. People no longer surprise me. When did society become so selfish to literally take food from a child ffs.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 21/03/2020 22:21

Well, it is easy. Stores should implement very strict no returns policy on these. People who genuinely needed a freezer won't mind. The others though.
Anyway you can't usually bring back what you used

Frangipanini · 21/03/2020 22:23

But when they are stuck with 3 generations of hand gel, they will want their money back.

I wish I could get a refund on my ibuprofen that I bought.

PeridotPassion · 21/03/2020 22:23

But the lack of sympathy for very scared vulnerable people is breathtaking

This. Plus the hypocrisy.

The Facebook ranters going on about the selfish bastards buying all the pasta and toilet roll...because it meant there was none left for them to buy Hmm

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 21/03/2020 22:24

Why would people want to return freezers, they are very useful if you get a heavy crop of fruit in the garden and for batch cooking,

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 21/03/2020 22:26

Why would people want to return freezers, they are very useful if you get a heavy crop of fruit in the garden and for batch cooking,

Because eventually they will need kid's bedroom ,where freezers are now, back🙈

alloutoffucks · 21/03/2020 22:26

@Whataboutthismess I am one of those people self isolating for 12 weeks. I think I now have CV and am scared. I am taking the medication I was told to take at first sign of symptoms because I am vulnerable.
Buying 3 months of food is twattish.

alloutoffucks · 21/03/2020 22:28

And I had no idea well off people were seriously buying for 12 weeks

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 21/03/2020 22:28

@alloutoffucks hope you feel better soon!

SnoozyLou · 21/03/2020 22:30

Not everyone is a CF

I think most of them are though. And it's ok limiting items to 3, but I'll bet some of these idiots are going around 2 or 3 supermarkets.

I genuinely think some people are looking at it as a game.

macaroniandpizza · 21/03/2020 22:31

I have my fridge freezer which does ds and I but I did fleetingly consider getting another wee freestanding one as we are in self isolation for 12wks but I didn't and I didn't because I have a perfectly good working freezer already and it's more than someone might have down the street. Before I self isolated i helped my neighbour out by giving her soup for her freezer and dog food for her dog and she was so grateful as she isn't able to get out due to a hip op recovery

Whataboutthismess · 21/03/2020 22:33

@alloutoffucks Take care, I hope you recover speedily and without complications.

I agree buying 12 weeks of food is twattish. I was trying to make the point that a lot of people are extremely scared and anxious. They are not really thinking rationally.

alloutoffucks · 21/03/2020 22:35

I understand they are scared. I am too.

Hadenoughofitall441 · 21/03/2020 22:36

There 8 people in our house so we already have 4 freezers, one chest, one upright, one small and a fridge freezer, at the start I thought at least we will get frozen food because a lot of people won’t have much space to store it, how wrong was I, found out the local electronics shop sold out and now the freezers are near off empty in the local shops. We aren’t panic buying, literally what we need and that’s it. We usually have a big shop the last week on the month, Tesco’s are out of slots for like 4 weeks. So 3/4 of us have grabbed the essentials from like 5 different supermarkets, it’s no where near what we usually buy but we ain’t greedy. If everyone just did thier normal shop they’d be fine. The supermarkets are staying open so it’s stupid to stock up, why pull you run yourself into debt for no reason.
