CFs literally panic buying freezers!

Found this out today - refrigeration shops are out of freezers due to people buying them to stock up on extra frozen stuff!

This is bananas! Who is doing this crazy shit?!

The same people who’ve bought all the loo roll. Batshit.

I asked the person who told me (works in a refrigeration shop) can’t they somehow ban it and he said the only thing they could do it prioritise needier people eg a 98 year old woman who only had a table top fridge and her carer had no where to put her food so had to get one for her! Such shitty, shitty behaviour from people.

My Mum and Dad, who are in their seventies, bought a freezer last week when all this kicked off, and now they have to self isolate for at least twelve weeks so I am glad they did. I would hardly call them CFs. I think people have to be careful about branding people with names without understanding their circumstances.

Hg30 · 21/03/2020 19:55

You don't know peoples situations and reasons for needing them so you can't really call them CFs. Lots of people I know only have a very small freezer so may need a new one if self isolating their families for 14 days or longer.

Stuffandnonsense100 · 21/03/2020 19:57

Just to say though - they are also sold out of the huge restaurant type freezers. You know, the horizontal ones people put in their garage?

Not everyone is a CF - but this person obviously can see the difference between older people and younger people. He also works in a local shop where most people buy their stuff so their names are on a system and he can see who has bought what other freezer from him and how recently!

Or how about ‘people needing freezers go
To store and buy them’

I guess you’d be judging us and many others buying laptops yesterday. Actually needed as our D.C. are off school and start online lessons next week while both parents work from home

Fuckmesideways · 21/03/2020 19:59

Surely that’s sensible? People can be isolated away for a long time.

HowIrresponsible · 21/03/2020 20:00

Fuck is that why I couldn't find one to buy.i actually needed it. Just a tiny ice making compartment so I needed one anyway.

BoswellsBollocks · 21/03/2020 20:03

I saw a big delivery of chest freezers being dropped off at The Range yesterday as we drove past.

Stuffandnonsense100 · 21/03/2020 20:03

@HerRoyalNotness

Do you think someone who has worked in a freezer shop their whole life can’t tell when there is an unnatural upturn in freezer purchases?! 😂

OP posts:
Stuffandnonsense100 · 21/03/2020 20:03

@BoswellsBollocks

CHEST FREEZERS!!! That’s what they are called! You genius (despite reminding me about fucking Boswell 🤬)

People need food and if they really have to go to the shops better they go less, so they should get at least 1wks shopping at a time. So if someone doesn’t have a big freezer makes sense. Not everyone is buying 3 months worth of food

Stuffandnonsense100 · 21/03/2020 20:05

@Fuckmesideways

No, it’s not sensible. This shop, like many, work with charities, care homes, those less fortunate and, you know, people who genuinely need a freezer because theirs has broken. It’s selfish to buy freezers you do not actually need. Frozen food is not the only food which lasts.

Francina670 · 21/03/2020 20:06

It’s really quite unfair blaming people for panic buying when it’s highly likely you are going to have to self isolate for up to 14 days at some point. Obviously people want to be prepared with food and other essentials.

I’m still shopping week to week and doing the same for my mother in law who is isolating. If we also have to isolate it’s going to be a very tricky situation and I am going to have to prepare for it. This means buying a lot more food all at once - the exact same thing everyone else has done and which has caused shortages.

nightimebrowser · 21/03/2020 20:07

Yeah we found this out yesterday, we are moving next week and nearly didn't end up with a fridge to order whilst selfish fucks would have had 2 or more!

SweepTheHalls · 21/03/2020 20:07

Why does that make me a CF? We're high risk. So trying not to go out.... The ability to keep in extra frozen veg will really help my family stay out of circulation.

Talia99 · 21/03/2020 20:09

When I moved into my flat I had a tiny freezer space under a fridge. Lots of my neighbours still have only that much space - they either shop regularly for fresh food (which you can’t get any more) or eat out (also no longer possible).

I have no doubt the upturn in purchases is caused by the corona virus but that doesn’t mean the freezers aren’t needed if people are to isolate as directed.

I’m incredibly glad I have a full size (under-counter size) freezer in a cupboard. I don’t know what I would do without it at the moment.

nightimebrowser · 21/03/2020 20:09

@SweepTheHalls I am high risk too but currently don't have ANY frozen veg because people are buying more than they need. (Like you)Hmm

WombOfOnesOwn · 21/03/2020 20:11

My sister bought one this week.

She's working in an emergency department that is getting more and more crowded. Her usual routine after work involved getting takeout food most nights. Now, she's using her rare time off to batch cook and freeze meals that she can reheat and eat during her (rarer and rarer) work breaks or when she comes home exhausted after a shift.

She had an absolutely tiny amount of freezer space before, and couldn't even freeze 5 days of meals and still have a few freezer basics in with them. Her freezer will keep her fueled up while she's saving people's lives and keep her from needing to use the stores or restaurants after coming into contact with confirmed patients.

Keep in mind the number of people who are essential personnel working longer hours right now and these freezers could be disappearing even if the ONLY people buying them are the ones who are using them in similar circumstances.

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 21/03/2020 20:11

A colleague’s neighbour bought 3 large chest freezers. Now filled with anything and everything he can ram in it. There are just two of them.

Not need but greed.

And he is apparently proud of himself for managing to do so.

And don’t mention the hundreds and hundreds of tins. Apparently they spent the best part of two days driving round the country spending like there is no tomorrow before the limitations were enforced.

Sensible? No. Selfish? Absolutely.

DrFoxtrot · 21/03/2020 20:11

I'm dreading completing my isolation a week tomorrow and there being fuck all left to buy Sad. Either that, or there'll be an abundance of things once everyone else is packed to the rafters. I'm spreading what I have in very thinly until then.

Graphista · 21/03/2020 20:12

“but this person obviously can see the difference between older people and younger people.” Age is not the only reason to be vulnerable to this virus.

Pregnant women (who may not be showing yet) and people with underlying conditions (which as it affects lungs may well involve many invisible conditions like cystic fibrosis) are also vulnerable and may be needing to increase their freezer space.

Yabu to assume that all those buying them are cf.

spacepoppers · 21/03/2020 20:14

I'm a frontline NHS nurse. I looked online to buy a freezer, so I could put a little bit extra aside to feed my family of 5 and not have to be panicking on shift that I can't get anything fresh to feed my children. Does that make me a CF? I couldn't find one that wasn't for sale for stupid money anyway, so baked beans it is...

BillysMyBunny · 21/03/2020 20:15

Panic buying freezers would be going out and buying 3, 4 or more freezers and hoarding them. Buying a new, extra or bigger freezer in anticipation of needing to go into quarantine for 14 days and thus needing to store more food may be very necessary for some people, especially if they live with vulnerable people needing to self isolate. Older people aren’t the only at risk group and I doubt the freezer owner has a list of everybody’s medical history and that of those they live with etc.
