Found this out today - refrigeration shops are out of freezers due to people buying them to stock up on extra frozen stuff!

This is bananas! Who is doing this crazy shit?!

We had about 12 weeks of food and over 100 toilet rolls before CV was even heard of, how is that twattish, it is being prepared for any eventuality

alloutoffucks · 21/03/2020 22:38

i said i did not include preppers who have been buying for months

ffswhatnext · 21/03/2020 22:39

More and more local shops are starting a delivery service. Check your local groups.

People are swapping and helping each other out. I saw a lovely thing the other day. Two local people had things between them to make a meal. Those ingredients served two households that night.

PeridotPassion · 21/03/2020 22:43

I’m one of the crowd that has tried (and failed) to buy a freezer for the garage. And i’ve, by increments, been stocking up on long life goods.

I’m not what i’d consider a ‘panicker’. I’m not an awful person. But I do have three kids to feed and they are my priority right now.

I’m not buying formula for my coffee or trampling little old ladies to fill my trolley with All the pasta. But this whole thing has made me pause and consider how much we take food for granted.

We generally do a twice weekly shop. Why not? Food is always there and it’s local enough that we can.

Except now it isn’t. And things are getting worse. And just like no one could have predicted a month ago where we are now...schools and businesses closed, social distancing, supermarkets running dry of staples...no one can predict what will happen by this time next month. Personally I feel there’s every chance that this is actually the calm before the storm and that things will get much worse.

So I’m shopping every couple of days and stocking up. I’ve frozen eggs and my own fresh fruit. I’ve listed store cupboard meals and bought a lot more tinned and dried food than I ever usually would. I’ve bought yeast and flour and bottled water and two sacks of potatoes for the garage. All things I’d never ‘usually’ do. Because who the fuck knows.

I fully appreciate that I’m adding to the empty-shelves problem and I’m one of the selfish twats people are bleating on about. But I’m going to carry on gradually stocking up because my family are my priority.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 21/03/2020 22:46

Maybe when all this is over people will see that being prepped is a good thing not something for people to ridicule and an extra freezer in the garage is sensible

PeridotPassion · 21/03/2020 22:50

WhentheDealGoesDown1

I agree. We always have plenty of food but empty cupboards before our next shop. Never again. My mission when all this is over is to keep stocking up so that we have several months supply of essentials at all times. And a massive chest feeezer for my garage!

MissConductUS · 21/03/2020 22:53

I've owned both types and the upright freezers are much easier to load and unload than the chest freezers. Get a self defrosting model as well. Defrosting a freezer is an awful chore.

ffswhatnext · 21/03/2020 22:57

@WhentheDealGoesDown1
Nothing wrong with prepping. Been doing it for decades, something I learned from my family and childhood of not having stores always opened.

In a way it feels like we need to go back to that. Have an afternoon and a whole day with nothing open.
Prepping as it’s known now. It’s just about ensuring you always have something a bit extra for when it’s needed.

My fridge freezer broke a few months ago. I didn’t go mad, just the usual stuff. I never take into consideration eating out, loss of appetite etc and before long I have a couple of weeks extra after 2 or 3 months.
Helps of course when the usual buys are in offer.

Who knows maybe it’s sensible shopping really that takes my health into consideration. 🤷‍♀️

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 21/03/2020 22:57

Beko freezers are best for garages as they work down to -15c, a lot of other makes aren’t suitable for low temperatures, ours is a frost free upright one

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 21/03/2020 22:59

HotPenguin

your reply is far too sensible and accurate to be taken seriously.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 21/03/2020 23:01

Tbf most of what people presented as "prepping" wasn't actually prepping. There was a big thread on it and there were some very good points. Having stocked up larder (kitchen cupboard) doesn't necessarily mean person is a prepper. I will never believe there are people who actually have an actual nothing at home before doing weekly shop.

ffswhatnext · 21/03/2020 23:03

Hated the chest freezer. Could guarantee every damn time, the thing wanted was at the bottom. Half empty the freezer to get it. Mine was deep, I’m short, I had to be careful I didn’t fall in the bastard thing.

Upright open door, open draw and less digging. Chop the body up right and you should still be able to store a body in one. You will need a mincer as well though. And go mainly for off the bone. Ribs will be a bit tricky. Eye balls, brain etc don’t freeze too well but will stay fresh in the fridge for a couple of days.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 21/03/2020 23:04

@ffswhatnext I like you😈

EmeraldShamrock · 21/03/2020 23:06

DP was removing the freezers from display for angry customers starting price €500 to €2000 a pop 3 weeks ago.
I'm not surprised there is nothing left.

PeridotPassion · 21/03/2020 23:09

I’m now going to look for a Beko upright freezer for the garage rather than a chest after recent posts 👍🏻 I didn’t even know some freezers weren’t designed for cold temperatures, every day’s a learning day!

EmeraldShamrock · 21/03/2020 23:12

My next will be an upright, I've a chest freezer like ffswhatsnext I'm small, it is like going down a well head first for frozen peas.

ffswhatnext · 21/03/2020 23:14

@BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser
Thanks. I don’t hear that a lot, I usually get people backing away. All I want to do is share some recipes with them.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 21/03/2020 23:17

@ffswhatnext 😂
Slowcooker ribs with whiskey bbq marinade?

Fantasiaa · 21/03/2020 23:18

Eye roll at all the posters claiming not to be part of the problem / a panic buyer but just “stocking up “ or just “ buying a little extra”

You are part of the problem.

Yes, you.

ffswhatnext · 21/03/2020 23:18

@EmeraldShamrock
I’m so glad I’m not the only one. Some supermarkets are ridiculous. Even before all this I would walk away from the freezer empty handed. Not because there was nothing there, I just knew after a failed attempt, I’m falling in trying to reach in so far 🤣

ffswhatnext · 21/03/2020 23:20

Mmm whiskey.
Aw fuck I haven’t got any.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 21/03/2020 23:20

PeridotPassion

Parents got all the alcohol

Toothsil · 21/03/2020 23:26

I know someone who works in Curry's and he sold 3 weeks worth of freezers in a single day last weekend...

Please explain to me, what I was supposed to do, other than buy enough food so if we had to self isolate I'd have enough to feed my kids?

I don't have a lot of money, and don't usually have cupboards with enough food in to last 2 weeks. (Well, I might have done when my freezer was working but it's not now.)

When it became clear coronavirus was coming our way. I stocked up. Not in one go, but I went shopping 4 times that week to get enough in. I didn't go mental as I couldn't afford it, I'd imagine I don't have much more in my cupboards than people who have large cupboards and are well off do on a normal week, but I did prioritise long life stuff.

On Tuesday, DS got ill, and we're not self isolating for 2 weeks. Our milk will run out tomorrow. I'm very glad I don't have to go out to the shop, and you should be too as I'm now an infection risk because of my DS.

We forgot to stock up on wine (damn!!!) and we're going to be eating some odd stuff by the end of the 2 weeks. But wouldn't you rather people like me, who risk infecting you, stayed at home?

I don't have family or close friends here I can ask to drop stuff off for me and I can't afford to live on takeaway.

If you are going to ask people to self isolate, then we need to create a system that allows them to do that. Berating people for stocking up isn't going to stop anyone getting the virus. Encouraging them to do lots of small trips to the shop is dangerous for everyone.

Asking what we can better do to get food to everyone, and to make sure those who are self isolating don't need to leave the house to get food would be much more productive.

What would you have had me done differently? Do you say I shouldn't have stocked up? Should my DS be starving by now? Or should I be out infecting you all?
