LOCKDOWN

Does anyone think that the whole of the UK will be put on lockdown?

OP posts:
SpokeTooSoon · 21/03/2020 19:26

this virus isn't going to go away, the plan is to slow it's spread so the NHS can cope, protect as many of the vulnerable as possible and hopefully a vaccine can be developed, not stop it completely

This is the truth. Hiding in your house for 12 weeks “until it’s over” is a myth. Curtailing freedom is purely to slow it down so we don’t get it at the same time as each other. Still highly likely you’ll get it eventually.

BirdandSparrow · 21/03/2020 19:27

My local NT place had to close the gates as the car park was full to capacity, that usually only happens on Boxing Day for example....

SpokeTooSoon · 21/03/2020 19:27

But if everyone does keep their distance, is it still a problem?

We walked in a country park today. Lots of people there, I didn’t come within 2 meters of anyone.

LynetteScavo · 21/03/2020 19:28

I think it's already been calculated when the lockdown needs to be for maximum effect.

I have a suspicion it will be sometime next week.

I don't think we'll get much warning.

I'm not sure exactly what a lockdown involves. Do I need to bring DS home from uni now or next week as intended. It's an 8 hour round trip. I'm a key worker but I only work weekdays. DH is desperately trying to keep his job but would drive through the night if necessary. Would I still be able to collect him next weekend if we were in lock down? on the plus side from what he's told me he had the virus last week and has been isolating for a week in an empty house

HouseElfy · 21/03/2020 19:28

Why can’t families go for walks in open spaces? So long as you don’t get close to others, what’s the harm?

But dont you see, if everyone does this then it will be impossible NOT to get close to others.

Personally I think those with gardens ought to be utilising those and leave public spaces for those without them.

nannybeach · 21/03/2020 19:28

Essential workers will be able to get to work, probably follow other countries, you will have a certificate to allow you to travel.

eeeyoresmiles · 21/03/2020 19:30

Don't know how many times it has to be said, this virus isn't going to go away, the plan is to slow it's spread so the NHS can cope, protect as many of the vulnerable as possible and hopefully a vaccine can be developed, not stop it completely. .

A lockdown will not stop it completely and no one thinks it will. But we're already well past the point where the NHS can cope, just with the already-infected people who are going to be getting gradually iller over the next few weeks. We're at the point where so many people are not doing what they've been told to do, that our only hope to do the "slowing down" you talk about is something more like a total lockdown. That's the awful reality of where we are now.

It's not a lockdown OR just slow it down - it now looks like we need a lockdown as the only way TO slow it down.

notangelinajolie · 21/03/2020 19:31

Yes lockdown needs to happen. And I think it will.
There are many thick people out there and I ashamed to say members of my own family who think they are invincible and that this is all some kind of silly game. There is a park across the road from me and this afternoon it was full of little children and stupid parents.
THE only thing that will keep them away from other people is being told they have to.
I also think a few troops on the street wouldn't go amiss.

HundredMilesAnHour · 21/03/2020 19:31

Excellent idea @HouseElfy. Sadly I think most people are too selfish to even think about this going by current behaviour patterns.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 21/03/2020 19:32

Lyda07 that is superb, I might have to record that tomorrow. We currently have plenty of time on our hands, what with being on our eighth day in lockdown in Spain ( and no, we don’t get to go out to exercise). If we go out, we have to justify our presence in the street to the police or the army. Fines start at €600 and go up to €30,000 and a prison sentence if we don’t have a good reason.

As for all the delusional idiots who think it won’t happen to them it will, and the more stupid people are, the harsher and longer it will be.

Simples.

LillianGish · 21/03/2020 19:34

In France you can leave the house for a legitimate reason - picking up essential shopping, medical appointment, travelling to and from work if you can’t work from home, walking the dog brief exercise (alone - not in groups). You print off and sign and date a form to state your purpose - if you are stopped by the police and don’t have the form or are in a group or are not doing what you have stated you are doing you are fined. It actually feels quite reasonable - the rules are clear and not open to interpretation, everyone knows what we are doing and why we are doing it - the vast majority comply because it is seen as anti-social and uncivic not to (and also because they don’t want to be fined).

StormyClouds · 21/03/2020 19:37

@Rosehip10

There have been NO tory cuts to the health service- funding for the NHS has increased every year despite what some of the far-left activists would tell you.

Derbygerbil · 21/03/2020 19:38

*Lock down should mean no one goes out, not even to buy food and the Army or whoever delivers it

I’m think we need stronger measures, but how does your “total lockdown” work in practice... Not even Wuhan was like that. What about doctors and nurses? I’m not sure how the military is expected to be a food production, distribution and delivery service for the national Confused

Snorkelface · 21/03/2020 19:41

I have friends in France on lockdown. They're in a fairly rural area but the lockdown still applies. If they want to leave their home they have to print off a form (handwritten if no printer available) that gives them a choice of 5 reasons why they're going out. Essential work, food shopping, medicine, exercise, vital family visits. Only one person can go out at a time (single parents can go with kids), so nothing like today where I saw couples walking about, just one person at a time. The form must be signed and dated and will be checked by police (they're outside a village but the police are present). Essential work doesn't mean essential workers as in key workers, in France's case it has meant essential work to keep the business going. Vital family visits are not social, they're welfare visits. Spain and Italy are stricter.

@LynetteScavo

I couldn't agree more. The Government has this planned.

Lovemusic33 · 21/03/2020 19:47

My guess is London will be in lock down in the next few day, closely followed by other cities and maybe full lock down in a week or so.

I would like to see how they are going to police it in rural areas though?

Letseatgrandma · 21/03/2020 19:55

What does a lockdown actually look like?

Would schools be open for childcare/SEN/social workers etc as they will be on Monday?!

jasjas1973 · 21/03/2020 19:55

There have been NO tory cuts to the health service- funding for the NHS has increased every year despite what some of the far-left activists would tell you

Yep but the funding hasn't kept pace with demand or the inflation rate for medical equipment, its not far left activists, its the Kings fund and Nuffield trust.....so in real terms it has.

The Government has this planned

Lol!!! We have all acted far too late, clubs pubs etc should have been shut down weeks ago and even now the govt is allowing people to go on holiday around the UK... Cornwall has 13 critical care beds... so come down here, get CV and die... good plan!!!! a week ago the plan was Herd Immunity!
Why the xxxx aren't they locking this travel aspect down as we approach Easter????

By the time we wake up, it will far too late.
btw we like Italy also have an aging population, 12m vs 13m (over 65s) 4th in europe.

Blakes77 · 21/03/2020 19:57

But in rural areas you can go out and not see anyone. I can go out at 6 am and walk in the woods and see not a soul, which is what I will do tbh.
I don't want lock down, I want people to start being sensible!
YES you can go to essential work, NO you can't go to coffee shops, or potter round markets or go clothes shopping. It really not complicated!!

Alsohuman · 21/03/2020 19:59

The number of beds is less than half it was 30 years ago. Successive governments have plundered the NHS and now we’re paying the price. Hopefully this will be the wake up call that starts the reverse.

Londoners and other city dwellers can't do that though, and the issue with that is that once they're categorically ordered not to, they'll descend onto your rural areas. Hence why a lockdown needs to be country wide.

Geepipe · 21/03/2020 20:00

Needs to be done hopefully monday at the latest. Im still in work for the next week. I work in a book shop. Non essential and we have had so many people in the last 2 days. People coughing and everything. We must have had over 100 customers today and yesterday alone. Many are tourists as well. I dont feel safe at work and the company says we will stay open and want us to encourage more customers in!

LynetteScavo · 21/03/2020 20:00

Would schools be open for childcare/SEN/social workers etc as they will be on Monday?!

Yes but only skeleton staff. All teachers will
Have to work from home, rather than going in and staying in individual rooms as is planned on Monday.

LynetteScavo · 21/03/2020 20:03

Sorry if I missed it up thread, but what exactly would a lockdown look like?

StarbucksSmarterSister · 21/03/2020 20:03

There have been NO tory cuts to the health service

Funny how Jeremy Hunt, former Tory Health Secretary said earlier this week he regretted the NHS cuts the Tories had made.

Do you think you know better than him?

Mind you aren't you the person who thought it was fine yesterday to go to the hairdresser, gym and lunch?
