LOCKDOWN

Does anyone think that the whole of the UK will be put on lockdown?

OP posts:
maggiso · 21/03/2020 18:55

But if there is a lock down how will I get to ( essential) work. I can understand closing all places for social gatherings, discouraging all but essential travel, social distancing reducing to minimal public transport but what about those of us that have to work and cannot work from home. There are quite a lot of essential workers like that - not just nhs and police.( I’m in the nhs)

middleager · 21/03/2020 18:55

While I am anxious re CV, my main frustration has always stemmed from those who have ignored this.

I think I'd feel better if we were on lockdown because seeing everybody on social media going out, wasting this precious time and placing us in danger while we are being so careful, makes me angry and sad.

Emmelina · 21/03/2020 18:56

My DH popped out earlier for supplies (unsuccessfully). He said the two playgrounds en route were heaving with kids.
People are not listening.
Over 1,000 new cases today.

HouseElfy · 21/03/2020 18:56

You will still be able to go to work.

snowone · 21/03/2020 18:57

DH says middle of next week. He's been right about everything else so far!

ScatteredMama82 · 21/03/2020 18:58

I think so, and soon. Just over a week ago they were saying we’re a long way from closing schools. Now look where we are.

middleager · 21/03/2020 19:00

Yes, it's almost as if the UK's 'plan' was no different to Italy's no plan.

Unescorted · 21/03/2020 19:01

Yep the cities may be empty …. because they all turned up here in the country. It was busier than a bank holiday weekend with the sun shining.

Bouncingbomb · 21/03/2020 19:04

My local NT place had to close the gates as the car park was full to capacity, that usually only happens on Boxing Day.

Whataboutthismess · 21/03/2020 19:06

Yes I hope so and immediately.
We need it we can't be trusted with social distancing.

kateandme · 21/03/2020 19:08

its such a hard balance isnt it.because the worry is with chinas absolute lockdown it means noone is getting it.but that int a good thing.they need peopel to get it but in a loooooong stretched out way so that the resources can cope,so that they have enough info in time to deal with it.vacciness.healthcare etc. but with china they will have to be let out and so it will all begin again.

RaininSummer · 21/03/2020 19:10

I wish they would do it as so many selfish fools wandering about. My lodger looked astonished when I suggested he was out of order going to Sainsbury's this morning just for snack bits and then 6 hours later to the co-op for more snacks.

LuckyLuckyWoman · 21/03/2020 19:11

ASAP I hope.

bevelino · 21/03/2020 19:16

Lockdown would be difficult to control due to government cuts in the past 10 years to the military and police. There simply isn’t enough personnel to enforce a lockdown.

BooseysMom · 21/03/2020 19:17

Our local FB page shows my seaside town had huge crowds sat drinking and eating from a takeaway hut. They were all lined up along the sea wall. I don’t understand it.

And today everyone was lined up for at least half an hour waiting to go in to buy food at the supermarket..what's the difference? Lock down should mean no one goes out, not even to buy food and the Army or whoever delivers it

strawberrylipgloss · 21/03/2020 19:19

Considering the very wide definition of key worker that emerged when school childcare was being sorted out, I wonder if enough people will be indoors to make lockdown successful? From what I read on here, many companies are saying that everyone is essential and needs to travel to work when the OP reckons that there are departments like marketing who could easily WFH.

I also wonder about the enforcement side of things. We don't have enough police officers to control knife crime. Will police plus army numbers be enough to make lockdown successful?

eeeyoresmiles · 21/03/2020 19:19

A lockdown is not effective as it simply means the virus will come back after.

It will come back afterwards - but we'll have bought ourselves time to build more ventilators, for a start! And if we re-implement lockdown-type social distancing in areas with new outbreaks fast, and test test test then, we'll keep the later peaks lower too. Low enough that we can keep more young people alive with those extra ventilators.

bevelino · 21/03/2020 19:22

The amount of people in supermarkets is a serious problem and the government needs to control it ASAP as it is obvious coronovirus will be spread by the amount of people in supermarkets at any one time.

Supermarkets should remove trolleys and only have baskets available to control panic buying.

Firef1y72 · 21/03/2020 19:22

Can't believe how many people are clamouring for their rights to be taken away. Our children have already lost their right to an education. We've lost our rights to partake in legal activities. And now people are actually demanding that we lose the right to walk out of our front door. Seriously do you think that we will get all these rights back easily??? Do you want to live in a fascist state/dictatorship?
Don't know how many times it has to be said, this virus isn't going to go away, the plan is to slow it's spread so the NHS can cope, protect as many of the vulnerable as possible and hopefully a vaccine can be developed, not stop it completely. .

eeeyoresmiles · 21/03/2020 19:22

Absolutely - what will happen to all the hundreds of thousands of dogs? They can't just be kept in indefinitely. Nor can children. Nor can most adults - I know I will quickly become very ill with depression if I can't get out and walk and so will many others.

What about the spiral in domestic violence? Violence against children when families are couped up? Rage against neighbours? Civil disobedience?

Those are all reasons why a complete lockdown is a measure of last resort. Sometimes last resort measures have to be used though, despite the disadvantages, because the alternative is worse!

Thisisworsethananticpated · 21/03/2020 19:23

It has to , as all the stupid fuckers are out and about

SpokeTooSoon · 21/03/2020 19:24

Why can’t families go for walks in open spaces? So long as you don’t get close to others, what’s the harm?

Derbygerbil · 21/03/2020 19:24

What about the spiral in domestic violence? Violence against children when families are couped up? Rage against neighbours? Civil disobedience?

What indeed! I suppose we’d better just let it rip and suffer hundreds of thousands of dead Confused

You do have a point though. As necessary as this is, it will create some significant social and family issues.

middleager · 21/03/2020 19:24

The plan Hmm is failing. Our death rate higher than Italy's at this point - and they had no plan, so yes, I would rather lockdown than lose my asthmatic child.

BirdandSparrow · 21/03/2020 19:26

Why can’t families go for walks in open spaces? So long as you don’t get close to others, what’s the harm? because if everyone does it then it negates the whole point of social distancing.
