LOCKDOWN

Does anyone think that the whole of the UK will be put on lockdown?

OP posts:
EvilPea · 21/03/2020 23:43

Most of the people working now are the key workers so in terms of transmission a lockdown won’t make a huge difference as these people will still be out mixing all day
Or self employed
Or in essential services
E.g utilities / trades people / legal
Or cannot work from home

Allaboardthemagicbus2020 · 21/03/2020 23:48

So, do people think it is likely that if we go to a more enforced lockdown in next week or so it will be in place for at least a few weeks?

StormyClouds · 22/03/2020 00:41

There is no need for a lockdown. What we should be doing is rapidly expanding our testing capacity and telling those who are vulnerable to self-isolate.

South Korea is getting through this by testing everyone with symptoms and then isolating people who are positive and their contacts.

That would be far more effective than populist but stupid measures like lockdowns.

HowIrresponsible · 22/03/2020 00:55

Lockdown isn't working in Italy

RoseCider · 22/03/2020 01:01

If you are not VITAL to helping reduce the virus stay at home with your kids, DONT send them to school

Many people will though as they can’t be arsed to parent their own children 🙄. Some parents need a boot up the arse.

BirdandSparrow · 22/03/2020 01:04

It hasn't had time to work.

MissyJane2 · 22/03/2020 01:04

@swimlyn Those going on about a lockdown don't understand exactly what it is. Do you really want to be under house arrest for weeks months on end?

No I don't.
I would rather they gave us a choice.
Advise us to not to go out if we can help it but don't force us.

I have none to o out and get food for me that's the only reason I go out.
If I had I would not be going out but I have to.

If the government are going to do this they should also provide care for those like me who have no family or friends to help them.

But as the know the NHS and social services don't.
So we have to fend for ourselves.

RoseCider · 22/03/2020 01:05

What we should be doing is rapidly expanding our testing capacity and telling those who are vulnerable to self-isolate.

Those who are vulnerable are not self isolating though - half of them are wandering about not giving a fuck. We need lockdown as people are not taking the severity of this virus seriously. People need a reality check and to stop spreading the bloody thing.

PicsInRed · 22/03/2020 01:06

If the father is useless and refuses to care for the children, what do people expect the mother to do if she's a key worker? She's going to put the kids in school and go to work.

There are very, very, very many relationships which would end immediately if the woman was shown the future and assured that her AND the kids would be safe. A man in the house isn't necessarily a welcome man, or a safe or caring partner and parent.

Keep that in mind before captivating women who are keeping the country going.

PicsInRed · 22/03/2020 01:06

*castigating ffs HmmGrin

MissyJane2 · 22/03/2020 01:08

But people will still go out even with lockdown.
So there will be a lot of people including me who will be sent to prison. As it's just not possible to stay at home and never go out for months and months.
1 or 2 weeks yes if you have got all of your food and supplys.
But no months.
Sorry.

StormyClouds · 22/03/2020 01:11

@RoseCider

If people who know they are vulnerable are choosing to put themselves at risk, then that is their choice and they have to take the consequences.

Other people should not have to be 'locked down' to protect people who are choosing not to protect themselves.

BirdandSparrow · 22/03/2020 01:12

Missy you are confusing lockdown with self isolating I think. Under Spanish lockdown (stricter than Italy) we can go out to buy food.

QOD · 22/03/2020 01:16

🙉
No

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 22/03/2020 01:32

There is no need for a lockdown. What we should be doing is rapidly expanding our testing capacity and telling those who are vulnerable to self-isolate.

Absolutely agree with this. This would also mean less people self isolating unnecessarily. More people will be able to keep working, meaning more funds to keep paying people who do need to self isolate.

Inkpaperstars · 22/03/2020 03:30

Brilliant @Lynda07

Lynda07 · 22/03/2020 03:51

Thank you, Inkpaperstars, but I didn't write it, wish I had! it was ANONymously written. I copied it from somewhere else.

Livelaughlove2020 · 22/03/2020 03:59
I know it can be hard for parents in lock down and not knowing what to do with your kids at home with a job to do. I’ve made this video in the hopes of helping parents have a few first steps!
BagpussAteMyHomework · 22/03/2020 04:52

Since we don’t have enough tests we need people to stay away from each other. I hate the idea of lockdown but while shops are open people will think it’s ok to go shopping in them. I admit I went to the garden centre today to buy vegetable/salad seeds and seedlings because this felt like a sensible bit of preparation.

It’s a lot to expect people to stay home voluntarily when the schools only shut on Friday. Mixed messages. Feels chaotic.

Snorkelface · 22/03/2020 06:54

Until we have tests to show that people have already had the virus testing for infection is limited in its usefulness at this stage, it's a bit too late. The virus is very actively in our population, a person can test negative one day and then positive the next. Testing for (presumed) immunity from previous infection is what we need so those who can no longer catch the virus can safely be around others. There are probably thousands of people who've had it without realising due to mild or non-existant symptoms and have already recovered. The antibody tests aren't available at all yet though.

ruby2019missyou · 22/03/2020 08:08

I don’t have kids at school and I’m not a key worker. My boss has not said we can work from home so I guess I will just carry on as normal.

OP posts:
BagpussAteMyHomework · 22/03/2020 08:52

Ruby If you CAN work from home then please take responsibility for your safety and everyone else’s and insist that you do. Things have moved very rapidly. A lot more people are now carrying the infection and not showing symptoms

maddening · 22/03/2020 08:58

Have you asked your boss if you can work from home?

ruby2019missyou · 22/03/2020 09:05

Have you asked your boss if you can work from home?

No, because he has said those of you who can come to work, should.

That’s the reason I mentioned enforced lockdown.

Considering every tourist town in the country has been heaving with twats acting as though its a bank holiday all weekend then yes, I do think there will be. People are selfish, belligerent arseholes seemingly and grounding them is now the only option left. There will be fines for people who break it.
