LOCKDOWN

Does anyone think that the whole of the UK will be put on lockdown?

@LillianGish

Do you think people would have responded to hard tactics though? I ‘m not so sure. Blackheath quite busy, Gails open , queue out the door.

Rumnraisin · 21/03/2020 17:34

Just seen a neighbours teenage kid (14) go off up the road with a mate - I just can not believe parents are condoning this.

Menopauseandteensdontmix100 · 21/03/2020 17:36

I hope lockdown comes soon. I am also self isolating/social distancing and WFH as did DH and DD last week. DS at a different school finished year 11 on Friday, no GCSE’s which he is very disappointed about, no prom, no prank day, no celebrating meeting up with friends outside school etc. DD 15 has not seen a sole and has been in the house with us for over a week except for dog walks.
We are in the minority among our friends and and family members and the over 70’s are the worst who still seem to think current measures suggested are OTT!!! Until everyone complies our isolating will be extended and will be for nothing.

Thehop · 21/03/2020 17:36

@Flaxmeadow that is hideous! I’m so sorry

LittleRootie · 21/03/2020 17:36

@LittleRootie Did I say anxiety was a joke? No I did not, but my use of caps and the subject title seem to have set you off so off you pop as per SaphireSalute's advice.

You clearly made light of it in your response and now compounding that by patronising me. You have posted a thread and I am responding. Your title was attention-grabbing and dramatic - I thought it might actually be informing that lockdown had been announced but in fact you were just out to get attention and succeeded.

rookiemere · 21/03/2020 17:42

Some people are idiots pure and simple.

I've just had a Facebook debate with someone annoyed that the Glenshee ski centre has agreed to close. He says it should stay open and people make their own minds up , I pointed out that the government has told people to only travel if essential and to carry out social isolation as it's a pandemic. He said and I quote "It's not a pandemic as more people each week die from snake bites" I did point out that the WHO said it was a pandemic, but decided to back off at that point.

Edifying though that a reasonable percentage of the population genuinely believe this is overblown, which is why we need a lockdown as softly softly approach is not working.

CallmeAngelina · 21/03/2020 17:43

I haven't been out today, but how come I could be criticised for doing so, when apparently it's OK for me to go to work (school) next week and mingle with some of the projected number of 1.4 million children who will be sent in even if their parents don't strictly need the care.

FairyBunnyAgain · 21/03/2020 17:44

In the leafy home counties people are not listening, my DDad still went for his Saturday round of golf with his cronies. DD and DH went for a run and said the park was heaving and whilst they were running fast and keeping away from everyone, most were in large groups close together.

itsgettingweird · 21/03/2020 17:44

After the fucking idiocy of people I've seen today I fear it may be the only option.

And it's really really not what I want.

But I also want to survive this.

thenightsky · 21/03/2020 17:48

My next door neighbours are having a party today with what sounds like a cast of thousands. They've all come in cars, 4 or 5 to a car. Our little close is packed.

Igglepigglesgrubbyblanket · 21/03/2020 17:49

I really hope not! Walking about with a safe distance between us is not going to spread the disease. People are observing distancing. By making every one stay inside by law you are removing too much personal freedom. Imagine being stuck in a flat with kids for 3 months and not being allowed out for a walk. There would be huge physical and mental health consequences. I really don't understand why people are clamouring for this

Angryrant55 · 21/03/2020 17:50

I fear the goverment is waiting till thursday and once the emergency laws are in force before lockdown.

Blakes77 · 21/03/2020 17:51

It's not complicated is it? You don't go out unless essential.
You can go out to exercise but don't get close to anyone.
You can go to work IF ESSENTIAL (like teaching key workers kids) but you can't gallivant about unnecessarily.
Really, I don't understand what it is that people don't get!?
And WHY are non essential shops still open? I drove past CarpetRight ealier-still open. MacDonalds is still open ffs. Insane.

Angryrant55 · 21/03/2020 17:51

@Igglepigglesgrubbyblanket
Do you want 50k deaths by early may?

NellyGrace · 21/03/2020 17:53

The whole U.K. needs to be put into lockdown. Not just London. Those staying are the ones who are listening.

Astressie · 21/03/2020 17:53

Not sure what lockdown would mean in practice. But, I think it may gradually happen without government action- for example, loads of shops are shutting. And, I just don't think we have the manpower to continue operating as normal with more people self-isolating. This will affect transport etc. Unless those that are losing their jobs are quickly redeployed and trained similarly to supermarkets many of whom are taking on new staff.

LittleRootie · 21/03/2020 17:55

There needs to be a much more emphatic message about what social distancing means, exactly what size groups, how much distance, where to go and where not. I know they have put it out but not clearly enough.

I went to my local shop to try (and fail) to get some bread a while ago. In the parade, the hairdressers and barbers were still open - a business that involves close physical contact with others in a confined space, and yet is allowed to remain open. Starbucks was open 'for takeaway only' - the shop was full of people queuing for their takeaway food and coffee.

Things like the above send out mixed messages to people so it's not surprising if they aren't following wishy-washy guidance.

MaxNormal · 21/03/2020 17:55

@Igglepigglesgrubbyblanket we are on a steeper death trajectory than Italy at present. People seem to be carrying on doing whatever they please. What other option is there?

fireflower998 · 21/03/2020 17:57

my friend went to the hairdresser today and when we were talking, she gave me the impression she feels I'm being over the top by staying home and only going for walks in the country where there are no or little people. She also said that there were lots of people out. It's that attitude of thinking that if others are ignoring the risks/advice, she can too. FFS. Only a full lockdown will sort this out.

Astressie · 21/03/2020 17:59

@MaxNormal, I'm interested. What do you mean a 'steeper death trajectory than Italy'?

StarbucksSmarterSister · 21/03/2020 17:59

Yes, absolutely.

56 more people dead here in the last day. We are literally 14 days behind Italy in the number of deaths.

DitheringDoris · 21/03/2020 18:00

I’ve popped down to my local supermarket in my nearest small town and it was reasonably stocked, no bread, no milk but had UHT, no pasta etc but plenty of frozen food and tinned, part baked rolls, it was quiet for a Saturday, further down the high street it was like a ghost town, we don’t have any chain stores but plenty of independents, some were closed, all 3 pubs closed and I was one of 3 customers in the chemist. On a sunny Saturday it’s usually busy because it’s a seaside town. I think people here are taking it seriously.

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 21/03/2020 18:01

My elderly friend lives in a ground floor flat with her own (very small) garden. Would she be able to go in it during a lockdown? This feels like a stupid question but she would have to go through a communal area to access it so she's worrying that she won't be allowed.

PepePig · 21/03/2020 18:02

Some people just don't want to personally make sacrifices. They want others to, but not them. And the sacrifices of others also shouldn't affect their little routines.

In a nutshell, they want a nurse, doctor, ventilator and a bed for if they get ill... but they don't want to stop socialising, doing their hobbies, etc, in the mean time.

And of course they don't want to parent their kids. If they're out of the house then they can sit and do what they want. Do we really think people so selfish they won't self isolate with symptoms or socially distance without, are going to sit and homeschool their kids?

Not a hope in hell.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 21/03/2020 18:02

I've been observing lockdown rules for the past two and a half weeks. It's very quiet outside, hardly anyone on the streets...
