Do you think the situation in the UK is going to end up being worse than Italy's?

Watching what is happening in Italy is so terrifying, it's a living nightmare and such a tragedy for all of them.

If the situation in the UK is still a couple of weeks behind, do you think our infection rate and death toll is going to be much higher than theirs? Sad

@Cam77
I suspect the Chinese government is much better at getting their comrades to comply with their restrictions, an area I'm not sure Italy or ourselves are strong on. However, I do believe that probably more people there contracted the disease. Based on absolutely no evidence whatsoever.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 20/03/2020 20:15

The problem here is that England is full of English people.
The schools close to keep kids at home, English parents are still letting kids out to parties and to hangout with all their friends.
The shops say that panic buying isn't necessary, English people panic buy.
Government announce pubs must close, English people pile in every pub.
So on and so on.

Think about this.. how shocked will you be I it's warm next week and you see photos of English beaches covered in English people and kids? I wouldn't be surprised even a little bit.

(Not all English people obviously, but a good amount of us english people are stubborn, ignorant and wont listen to what's good for them. In fact, a lot of then seen to be determined to do the opposite of what those in positions of authority tell them.)

GrumpyHoonMain · 20/03/2020 20:15

No because we should hopefully be out of flu season by the time the shit really hits the fan.

Buccanarab · 20/03/2020 20:17

I think we in the UK are actually doing a lot more/better than the media (and especially here) would have you think. The stats for both UK and Italy below start from the 15th of Feb (don't know why?) and for whatever reason we've faired a lot better than Italy over the last month doing what we're doing.

15th feb no. confirmed cases/deaths
Italy - 3/0
UK - 9/0

1st March - cases/deaths
Italy - 1701/41
UK - 36/0

15th March - cases/deaths
Italy - 24,747/1809
UK - 1391/35

Latest figures - cases/deaths
Italy - 47,021/4032
UK - 3983/177

**The contrast between Germany & the UK is staggering.

The death rate from the virus in Germany is MUCH lower than here.

Also in Austria.

Better government, more respect for authority.**

The brainless anti-UK comments on here are on another level. Germany is earlier on in the crisis in that it has so far affected far more younger people, isn’t recording Covid-19 infections in people with other conditions (including treatable ones). There is nothing magical about Germany - they have a population which is as unhealthy as the UK’s. Reporting is the difference.

BillieEilish · 20/03/2020 20:22

In Spain, schools are SHUT. All of them. My DB is a teacher in UK and teaching MORE, with the symptoms. I have just had a big argument with him. He won't listen.

BoomBoomsCousin · 20/03/2020 20:22

Italy has an older population than the UK (nearly a third as many people over 70 as the UK has) and more smokers (around 25% more), so their vulnerable population groups are probably more significant than the UK's. That means we will likely see fewer people affected as seriously.

Hopefully, that will translate into a lot fewer deaths, but our lack of ventilators may negate that advantage.

DowntownAbby · 20/03/2020 20:23

@Isla727

no protective gear for medics

Stop talking shite.

Cam77 · 20/03/2020 20:23

@GrumpyHoonMain

That’s a strong claim. Sources please.

Weedsnseeds1 · 20/03/2020 20:25

Yes, we are following the Iralians with a pattern of people exiting highly infected cities, for the relatively uninfected countryside.
We are maybe 2 or 3 weeks behind Italy in my opinion

Toomanycats99 · 20/03/2020 20:26

I read somewhere that part of the issue in Italy is the concentration of cases in certain areas - they are more Geor graphically spread i the uk so less pressure on individual hospitals (although I guess London maybe an exception)

Ellapaella · 20/03/2020 20:27

@DowntownAbby it's not shite. Do you work in a hospital? Are you nursing or medical? Because I am and I can assure you there isn't enough. It's been on the BBC news yesterday and today and has been confirmed by multiple chief executives of multiple NHS trusts.
I can't even get FIT tested until the 31st March. We have been told to put on a simple
Mask (proven not to work), gloves and aprons and hope for the best. Fact.

SouthernMamma · 20/03/2020 20:31

My worry is that people will be treated who don't have as much chance to survive and that we need to focus on having capacity on younger people if they get it, or God forbid kids and babies

LeeMiller · 20/03/2020 20:33

@VenusTiger Italy's patient 0 was has been identified, he was a German businessman, Patient 1 was an Italian superspreader who went undiagnosed for ages. Nothing to do with the Chinese community in Italy. The first cases in Italy were a couple of Chinese tourists but that outbreak was successfully contained.

Ellapaella · 20/03/2020 20:37

What everyone also needs to be concerned about is that the NHS will very soon (next few days) be operating on an emergency basis only. Take a few moments to think what that means. The impact will be enormous, not just on those who have Coronavirus and need treatment but on all those who currently have other serious medical problems who will not be able to access anywhere near there usual level of care and treatment.
We should have been preparing properly for this weeks ago. My hospital is still in a state of chaos and uncertainty with no real leadership. The infection control teams have been appallingly inadequate at dealing with what's coming, they are like rabbits in the headlights.

Campervan69 · 20/03/2020 20:38

Do you think the Italian cases are the worst because so many families live altogether whereas our old people are more socially isolated and so probably won't have had as much contact with super spreaders?

TheCanterburyWhales · 20/03/2020 20:40

Evening Lee Smile

Buccanarab- no good just looking at dare by date. You need to look at a fourteen day difference and the trajectories. I'll attach yesterday's.

Do you think the situation in the UK is going to end up being worse than Italy's?
Do you think the situation in the UK is going to end up being worse than Italy's?
Barracker · 20/03/2020 20:41

Those who are interested in following daily stats can do so at www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/uk/

We are 14 days behind Italy, Buccanarab. Our death totals are today what theirs were on March 6th. Our death totals yesterday, were what theirs were on March 5th.
And our totals tomorrow and the day after, and the day after that will resemble theirs on March 7th and 8th and 9th. 233, 366, 463. Daily increments will be bigger every day.

Their past two weeks history, is our future written out for us.

SharpieInThe · 20/03/2020 20:41

I'm keeping my kids in.
We haven't been out in a week.
If we do have to go out it'll be just one of us and we'll be taking precautions on returning.

No vulnerabilities in the family , but am I fuck killing someone elses Maw with mega-pneumonia when I've got everything I need here.

TheCanterburyWhales · 20/03/2020 20:42

Families don't all live together in Italy any more than Brits wear pearly queen coats and eat pie and eels.
Or, some do, but a very small minority.

fruitybum · 20/03/2020 20:43

I honestly think we will be the worst effected

fruitybum · 20/03/2020 20:43
