Do you think the situation in the UK is going to end up being worse than Italy's?

Watching what is happening in Italy is so terrifying, it's a living nightmare and such a tragedy for all of them.

If the situation in the UK is still a couple of weeks behind, do you think our infection rate and death toll is going to be much higher than theirs? Sad

The contrast between Germany & the UK is staggering.

The death rate from the virus in Germany is MUCH lower than here.

Also in Austria.

Better government, more respect for authority.

It's at time like this when you are reaping the whirlwind of not funding science education for so long unlike in the EU. That and until my generation, large swathes of society, particularly women were denied scientific education right up until the 1980's. There still seemed to be myths amongst some teachers that teaching girls STEM would give them panicked ovaries or a twisted womb it would seem..
Even if you aren't a scientist - critical thinking and making deductions and predictions from available evidence is still a major asset to life in general.

Apirateslifeforme · 20/03/2020 19:55

Yeah I think so. Too many, Itll never effect me fucktards.
Lots of people still in bars in our area, looking for karaoke in the area as recently as last night. Too many people are trying to continue on as usual with no regard for anyone else.

TheVanguardSix · 20/03/2020 19:56

Reporting for spreading panic

You do you, and keep on keeping on with your ostrich-like antics.

OP, you're not at all OTT. We didn't isolate soon enough. And we haven't been testing. That'll prove to be quite a lethal combination.
I've seen my neighbours going in and out of their cars today, kids in tow, getting in the car, driving off, coming home, going back out again. It's like Baby's Day Out in my neck of the woods. People are treating this like school hols, out and about, going here and there in their football kits, bags slung over shoulders, just back from 5 a side.

Ravenesque · 20/03/2020 19:57

I think it's likely that it will be at least as bad as Italy - with fewer beds - if not worse because Johnson keeps giving advice and not closing things down and making it clear that social distancing is not a choice but a necessity. It makes me very angry because it's not as though we can't see what is happening elsewhere but there seems to be a total lack of responsibility when it comes to ensuring that we stop things getting worse. People who aren't taking it seriously will not do so just because they see Johnson being jolly ho, ho, ho Johnson pretending that all is well and we'll have beaten this in 12 weeks unless and until they are forced to do so.

Cam77 · 20/03/2020 19:58

@Isla727
Germany is actually testing people from initial symptoms and then isolating them. A crazy plan, but it seems effective. Whodathunkit.

TheVanguardSix · 20/03/2020 19:59

If anything, this government has proven that YOU have to look after you and yours first. Nobody else will do that for you.

Peasfox · 20/03/2020 19:59

I’m hoping the new measures which should have been in place sooner will work. I do wonder if it spread faster in Northern Italy due to the thin air and altitude. Bugs spread like wildfire in a ski resort. I have no actual evidence (bar living in the alps for a few years) to back that uneducated thought up though, just musing!

FatAlbert · 20/03/2020 20:00

It’s going to be bad here.

It’s going to be bad because selfish fuckers are cramming in as much socialising as they can right now, not caring that they are making this worse for everyone.

I hate people right now, so stupid and selfish.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 20/03/2020 20:00

No idea.

Relax as much as you can, don't go out unnecessarily, maintain social distance, isolate if appropriate and pray.

Notabadger · 20/03/2020 20:02

Why are we not doing what Italy is (ie lockdown) today? Why do the government want it to get that bad??

FatAlbert · 20/03/2020 20:03

Having followed the news from January it’s been fairly obvious where this has been headed, like a devastating car crash in slow motion.

The UK has not prepared. They’ve reacted too late to do any useful curve flattening to protect people and the NHS.

Cam77 · 20/03/2020 20:05

Johnson will probably be gone by year’s end and in years to come will be about as popular as post Iraq Blair.

Casino218 · 20/03/2020 20:05

@Gfplux we loved Luxembourg when we went in the summer. Great country.

VenusTiger · 20/03/2020 20:05

Over 100k chinese workers living in N.Italy working in the leather industry/factories - flights direct Wuhan to Lombardy - Chinese New Year saw 1000s flying back and forth. Also, hospitals, surgeries and pharmacies were not closed to anyone showing symptoms in N.Italy - imo it's apples and oranges OP.

SuckingDieselFella · 20/03/2020 20:06

@Cam77

Germany doesn't invest in its services properly. The healthcare system in Germany is completely private.

If you'd checked your facts you'd realise that you are arguing in favour of a privatising the NHS.

Peapod29 · 20/03/2020 20:06

I think it’s inevitable. We have acted later than pretty much anywhere else with a similar trajectory. I think people need to be prepared, it’s not really spreading panic. That said they say 80% will have it mildly and I’m sure lots of people won’t even know they have had it. But the nhs won’t cope with the number so people will Basically be left to die before their time.

Cam77 · 20/03/2020 20:06

@FatAlbert
And a titanic failing of leadership. There has been none.

BanKittenHeels · 20/03/2020 20:06

Yes I have no doubt about it.

Cam77 · 20/03/2020 20:09

@SuckingDieselFella
Germany has a universal multi-payer health care system paid for by a combination of statutory health insurance (Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung) and private health insurance (Private Krankenversicherung).
According to the World Health Organization, Germany's health care system was 77% government-funded and 23% privately funded as of 2004.

Bye.

2toe · 20/03/2020 20:09

I think it will be much worse than Italy.
I work in non food retail, people are not taking this seriously, they are out in their hundreds and thousands buying non essential items. I was hoping today’s announcement would include closing non essential shops but no so I still have to go to work and be exposed while customers happily buying non essentials items tell me they are surprised we are open and shops should be shut!

FreakStar · 20/03/2020 20:10

Does anyone know if other countries are opening schools to key workers kids like we are- over 25% of the kids in my school will still be in on Monday- this is bad news in my eyes for trying to social distance! I really don't think ALL of them couldn't find alternatives to school!

SuckingDieselFella · 20/03/2020 20:12

@Cam77

Ok, so you don't know what you're talking about.

Any more copy and pastes from Wikipedia? Grin

PepePig · 20/03/2020 20:14

Probably worse, tbh. We're surrounded by idiots here, apparently. I can't personally wait to give birth at the peak of all this... Confused

Cam77 · 20/03/2020 20:14

@sucking
Wiki is more than enough to refute your claim. Why dig deeper?
