Do you think the situation in the UK is going to end up being worse than Italy's?

Watching what is happening in Italy is so terrifying, it's a living nightmare and such a tragedy for all of them.

If the situation in the UK is still a couple of weeks behind, do you think our infection rate and death toll is going to be much higher than theirs? Sad

Then in a month we will have an outbreak of sad faces in the daily mail saying no one warned us now look what’s happened to me.

lubeybooby · 20/03/2020 19:26

Yes. We've been way too slow and have even fewer ICU beds

PrincessMargaret · 20/03/2020 19:26

Of course, because so many people have not taken this seriously.

Frenchfancy · 20/03/2020 19:30

Italy has twice the number of icu beds than the UK. It will be worse. Much worse.

Remmy123 · 20/03/2020 19:34

Some premier inn hotels are closing to be makeshift hospitals apparently

My town today was heaving I found it so frightening

Kids everywhere, teenagers, I got what I needed and went!

Tomorrow we are in apart from a walk or bike ride

feelingverylazytoday · 20/03/2020 19:35

Yes, but we won't be the worst hit.

Talia99 · 20/03/2020 19:35

Northwick Park have apparently now reopened (according to the BBC - I don’t have any personal knowledge).

CountTessa · 20/03/2020 19:36

Yes, if people keep just thinking about themselves. No if they see themselves as potential spreaders and start being responsible.
I am doubting the numbers from China

dontaskformedicaladviceonmn · 20/03/2020 19:36

Yes.
The figures talked about on this thread are horrifying

DwayneBenzie · 20/03/2020 19:37

Useful chart here. U.K. cases are massively under counted because we are not testing but the death numbers give a clearer picture.

Do you think the situation in the UK is going to end up being worse than Italy's?
LambriniSocialist · 20/03/2020 19:39

Looking at the death rate we are already ahead of Italy's curve I think? 2 weeks ago this Sunday they locked down the North completely with the rest of Italy following 2 days later. We aren't really doing anything else on top of any of that to slow it down are we? I don't get it really.

Roselilly36 · 20/03/2020 19:41

I think it’s possible, sadly.

Barracker · 20/03/2020 19:41

Yes.
I think it's a mathematical likelihood.
They imposed suppressive measures much earlier in their epidemic than we have.
Their first regional lockdowns were 4 weeks ago. The whole country went into full lockdown 11 days ago, which we are yet to do.
They have almost twice the ICU beds per capita than we do.
If they follow China's pattern, they will start to see the increases slow 12 days after full lockdown. That is tomorrow for them.
They are currently overwhelmed and their death rate is 8%.
We have been too slow, and we still haven't locked down. We are 14 days behind them.

We too will continue to climb faster and faster until 12 days after lockdown. Which is yet to happen.

Stay home, and encourage others to do the same.

SuperlativeScrubs · 20/03/2020 19:42

No one around our area is taking it seriously either OP. They think it's a free holiday and let their kids out in groups to hang around the street while moaning about not having money and hoarding the essentials.

Local pub is packed tonight, as is the one further away.

Ihateselfishbastards · 20/03/2020 19:43

We seem to have quite a bid supply of idiots so I’d say yes.

Cam77 · 20/03/2020 19:44

The Germans appear to be doing a very impressive job in keeping people alive.

  1. Germany is actually testing people and then isolating them as necessary.
  2. Germany has several times the ICU beds as the UK

Basically Germany is a solid country which elects solid governments, and invests in its services properly ... unlike us instead us, being fixated with innumerate right wing muppets who talk posh and occasionally make us laugh.

mummagirl · 20/03/2020 19:47

I love in a very small coastal holiday resort. Our wee town was empty last weekend...today it is heaving with holiday makers. Our local infrastructure CANNOT cope if even one person gets ill. Our cottage hospital cannot cope on any random week day in the winter
I am absolutely terrified

Isla727 · 20/03/2020 19:49

Yes- fewer beds, no protective gear for medics, delayed responses etc.

Quartz2208 · 20/03/2020 19:49

Do we believe the China and Iran numbers though? The reports that came out of China had it similar to Italy and Iran I dont think is telling the truth at all

Cam77 · 20/03/2020 19:51

@CountTessa
I am doubting the numbers from China
I’ve read that a dozen times today but have never seen anything to justify it. I know hundreds of people in China and they are starting to (for now) relax. Bear in mind though that there “relaxed” is more sensible cautious than our “mad panic high alert (accompanied by grand slogans from the British government with very minimal actual action)”. Perhaps that explains the numbers there compared to ours here.

PussGirl · 20/03/2020 19:51

Italy has 4.2 doctors per 1000 head of population

UK has 2.2

Dumbing down the NHS for years & years doesn't look so clever now, eh HMG?

Gfplux · 20/03/2020 19:52

I live in Luxembourg.
A week ago when the Government (matching France and Spain incidentally) announced almost everything was to close down the shock brought it home to everyone how serious it was.
In the past week people are respecting the “new normal” and there is not any panic buying.
In my opinion the drip drip drip of measures in the UK has not persuaded many to take the situation seriously.

Cam77 · 20/03/2020 19:53

I’m afraid that the CCP Politburo is just a lot better at planning and implementing major projects than the Bullingdon Club

Sunshine1239 · 20/03/2020 19:54

My local hospital only had 6 ICU beds and it caters for several towns

We’ve got no chance
