Have you seen rumours of army trucks?

I've heard from two separate sources about army trucks in towns - assuming it's not true (yet!) and wondered if anyone had heard the same?

@coronamoana yup, Clapham Common. I know the centre is at Clapham junction but have never seen them out and about before.

PlomBear · 18/03/2020 18:34

It’s like some people want martial law.

Kuponut · 18/03/2020 18:34

Yeah, bomb disposal squad out, army jeeps and trucks and Chinook helicopter transports.

Totally fecking normal - we live near a base and one of my best friends is a military wife who lives on the base.

Also shitloads of soldiers in Tesco - it's opposite the base and they're all trying to buy bog roll like the rest of the fecking planet.

coronamoana · 18/03/2020 18:48

@cyber me neither & born & raised closeby so defo unusual.

coronamoana · 18/03/2020 18:50

It’s like some people want martial law.

Far from it but why do you think the governments in other countries fined & threatened people who didn't observe the lockdown?

Genvonklinkerhoffen · 18/03/2020 18:59

The army reserve (TA of old) have to do a 2 week "annual camp" each year. A lot are being cancelled so it could be that they are doing it "in house" & therefore you see them more.
I'm intimately involved in Coronavirus planning and have very little knowledge of what's going on outside my immediate area. Speculation based on "a friend high up in government" is the same as when the queen apparently died recently. Not helpful. Largely bollocks.

lyralalala · 18/03/2020 19:02

The two photos going round Facebook of army trucks on the M62 and M25 show trucks driving on the wrong side of the road to be in the UK

MrsDrFC · 18/03/2020 19:09

Haa I'm laughing at the donut who put the stupid post on fb not realising the trucks were driving on the wrong side.
There's not a lot of hope is there so we're doomed I tell you doomed. and fb dimwits cannot help us

PlomBear · 18/03/2020 19:17

I live on a military base. It’s fine here. Same as normal.

MrsLangOnionsMcWeetabix · 18/03/2020 19:22

Also whoever said the army are being recalled from Germany you do realise there are only a couple of hundred of them left there anyway? They’ve been closing the bases there since 2010. FFS

On Facebook today Confused

Have you seen rumours of army trucks?

Genvonklinkerhoffen · 18/03/2020 19:32

@ MrsLangOnionsMcWeetabix I wonder if these people have misread the news article. There was going to be a significant UK presence on DEFENDER 20 in Germany and Eastern Europe which has now been cancelled/recalled. Clearly that's very different to the small number of UK troops who hang in Germany "permanently".

SquirmOfEels · 18/03/2020 19:55

"Hmm, I saw a troop of what must be TA people doing exercises in a SW london park today"

The Mil Prep College - who look exactly like TA - exercise every weekday in and around the Clapham Junction area. To get tomClapham Common, they walk in an orderly line, going past TKMaxx (which is where that pic was taken)

bemoreeverything · 18/03/2020 20:01

holly

Your picture from Facebook today is of some vehicles driving on the right. We drive on the LEFT. This is not our army coming to lock us up.

feelingverylazytoday · 18/03/2020 20:04

It's like some people want martial law
I do. I think it's time to clamp down now.

TooTrueToBeGood · 18/03/2020 20:09

I do. I think it's time to clamp down now.

I think you don't have a clue what martial law actually is.

Genvonklinkerhoffen · 18/03/2020 20:11

@feelingverylazytoday you win the prize for the least informed opinion of the week. Against strong competition I might add...

AllPointsNorth · 18/03/2020 20:16

Graphista is right, and I’ve seen it happen numerous times. In emergencies, the army gets called in to support with expertise, manpower and resources.
They helped with incidents from Aberfan to firefighting in ‘76 during the droughts to flooding. Not the Navy, or RAF but the army.
It was a huge source of pride to me as an army child, got a problem, who do you call?

AllPointsNorth · 18/03/2020 20:18

And organising efficient, reliable food drops to the elderly in isolation?
Army can do that better than Ocado.

Lifesavesocialdistance · 18/03/2020 20:20

Standing outside care homes picking off elderly who break quarantine with a sniper rifle 😂😂

I feel comforted that the army is being called in. I'm sure they are far more used to wider larger organisational stuff.

AeroplaneLady · 18/03/2020 20:31

I hope they bring the army in. I hope they are used to control selfish fuckers that can think of nothing but a long list of excuses as to why social distancing/isolation is too difficult for them.

In reality, I see them moving about all the time around here. I suspect theyll be used to support essential services that struggle as current staff isolate/go sick.

Genvonklinkerhoffen · 18/03/2020 20:34

"The army" have children and get sick too. Just a reality check...

PicturesOfCats · 18/03/2020 20:35

I can’t wait for the army to come in. Certain people moaning non stop about the government ‘doing something’.
Same people now screeching about whether they will be allowed out.
Be careful what you wish for

AeroplaneLady · 18/03/2020 20:38

34Genvonklinkerhoffen I do realise that. All ex forces in our house.

AllPointsNorth · 18/03/2020 20:43

They are also used to extended periods of unaccompanied postings and being confined to barracks. And obeying the rules.
They’ve got ambulances, fire engines and other useful stuff. Not just guns and big boots.
