Have you seen rumours of army trucks?

I've heard from two separate sources about army trucks in towns - assuming it's not true (yet!) and wondered if anyone had heard the same?

I'd be happy to see them too, particularly the lovely Gurkhas, who were the only people to stop and help me when I found some random chap lying "unconcious" in the street.
Not a whole platoon of Gurkhas- just 2 off duty gents, going about their business.
Unconcious random, woke up, as I was speaking to 999 call handler (on Gurkha's phone), got up and staggered off, after hurling some vile, racist abuse at my/his rescuers.
Shame they didn't have their rifles with them.!
I'd have happily been called as a witness for the defence😊

Hearthside · 18/03/2020 16:12

Well will keep an eye out for them on the rural area i work in they would highly likely get lost as sat navs take you way off here Grin.On a serious note if it curbs the selfish panic buying i am all for it .

VivaLeBeaver · 18/03/2020 16:12

I find it reassuring rather than fear mongering if it’s true.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 18/03/2020 16:12

Bojo said last week 10,000 army personnel being drafted in to help move medical supplies, support police and hospitals etc

SuckingDieselFella · 18/03/2020 16:16

The biggest danger right now is people posting random nonsense on the internet.

The army are part of normal civil defence planning. In an emergency they take over firefighting, delivering food to supermarkets, getting people to hospital. I for one will be happy to see them particularly if it's Ant Middleton.

MrsDrFC · 18/03/2020 16:41

Hopefully the army can get down to Tescos and sort out the selfish arseholes who have stripped shelves of essential items and left nothing for others, now that would go a long way to help out because posting fake shite by the stupid on fb certainly won't

Willow2017 · 18/03/2020 16:51

Ive seen the mass hesteria over images and videos posted on fb. They arent even driving on the correct side of the road. And clearly look like italian army trucks

You cant argue with stupid!

Pilot12 · 18/03/2020 16:57

If the panic buying gets any worse I think they should put armed guards at the supermarket doors.

If we go into lockdown somebody has to be on the streets stopping people from meeting up for play dates, keeping the teenagers off the swing parks etc!

PlomBear · 18/03/2020 17:08

There isn’t going to be martial law. The army aren’t going to be shooting civilians, it’s not a repeat of Bloody Sunday.

DH is a military officer. It’s business as usual. The army may be tasked to help out like they in flooding situations. Nothing sinister.

JemimaPuddleCat · 18/03/2020 17:15

I called them as I couldn't get through on 111 and have run out of crisps. Wink

I hope they are on standby, we need to be taking a pro-active approach.

@nancypineapple
Let's hope so. Let them know there's an empty side of the bed here Grin

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 18/03/2020 17:16

I thought they said they wouldn't be using the army. If they are gearing up it will be for checks during a lockdown.

SuckingDieselFella · 18/03/2020 17:25

Yes that's right @LadyTiredWinterBottom2 . They'll be on the streets to shoot you if you're walking your dog.

Anybody who says they will be delivering food to supermarkets, driving ambulances, firefighting or any of that normal stuff is lying. Confused

PlomBear · 18/03/2020 17:32

I keep reading on the DM that “my friend told me all leave is cancelled and he’s being deployed on the streets from Friday.”

It’s not true. I work with the military and DH is military!

Why are people lying and making up stories?

Genvonklinkerhoffen · 18/03/2020 17:33

@LadyTiredWinterBottom2 I just rolled my eyes so hard. Where do you get off on spouting such bollocks?

YellowPinkie · 18/03/2020 17:34

There are rumours of everything.

The government will be dropping emergency supplies via flying monkeys soon.

Dyrne · 18/03/2020 17:49

I work with someone high up in the government and they told me that soon we’re all going to be marched out of our homes to form a human barricade around Downing Street and Buckingham Palace.

It’s true Cos I said it on the internet; and if I say it on the internet it must be true Hmm

Growingboys · 18/03/2020 17:52

yes i was told on the M25 heading to London. As the M25 goes around London I'm not sure what this means!

Cyberworrier · 18/03/2020 17:58

@SquirmOfEels
Hmm, I saw a troop of what must be TA people doing exercises in a SW london park today- I walk there daily and have never seen them before. I think it’s good we will have all these extra people to help keep things going, 🤞

susandelgado · 18/03/2020 17:59

Yes I have ( Wales)

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 18/03/2020 18:01

I heard Tom Hanks sent them.

coronamoana · 18/03/2020 18:06

@cyber near Clapham?

coronamoana · 18/03/2020 18:07

i think it's pretty obvious that once schools are closed we need a strict lockdown

Graphista · 18/03/2020 18:08

I’m from a military family but not served myself but loads of experience as a “dependent” and a few cousins still serving.

The armed forces (all branches not just army) will have been quite early on asked to prepare for
whatever support they may be asked to provide.

This can be anything from storage of goods to haulage to emergency transport for the sick to healthcare (there are still many hcps and associated professionals in the armed forces, not as many as there was but still a fair number), comms support, admin support to govt, up to and including IF NEEDED helping with law and order and keeping a lid on any civil unrest.

They are people just like us, they will also be worried about their friends and family.

I’m quite concerned about the lack of any mention of what’s happening with overseas troops but there may be a logistic or socio-political reason for that.

rather than helping out in roles they are trained for errr what roles do you THINK they are trained for?!

Yes they are all primarily “soldiers” but the vast majority are trained in areas that will be essential now:

Logistics & store management
Admin
Financial management
Telecoms & IT
Motor transport
Healthcare...

“I mean, logistically, why on earth would we want extra manpower?”

They are also trained to be adaptable!

So they can provide manpower to essential services right now we could see serving personnel with transferable skills or abilities deployed to fill in for the following roles if the civilians are unable to work:

Farmers
Manufacturers
Retail staff
Delivery drivers (if they can drive a tank they can drive a lorry)
Civilian logistics specialists (the ones that sort the supermarkets supplies out)
Telecoms staff

Just to name a few.

And as @AroundTheWorldIn8Moves says (I’ve only 35 under my belt) they also have vehicles and equipment that could be useful.

“I want Torchwood to come to the rescue!” Ha! I wish!!

I must admit I’m somewhat amused at the thought of my ex being called back up! He retired a few years ago but will still be classed as “reserve” for emergencies and he’s frankly bloody useless!

Joking aside I’ll be very glad if they’re asked to step in, there will at least then be logical decisions made and actions carried out!

dementedma · 18/03/2020 18:28

@genvonlinkerhofen. I stand corrected. I work for the MoD but what do I know?

Genvonklinkerhoffen · 18/03/2020 18:32

¯\(ツ)/¯ it's not the name though. So. I don't know what you know tbh. Maybe don't contribute until you're sure. It just feeds the flapping.
