Have you seen rumours of army trucks?

I've heard from two separate sources about army trucks in towns - assuming it's not true (yet!) and wondered if anyone had heard the same?

Yes I have heard rumours and seen pictures also of army trucks on the M62.

michaelbaubles · 18/03/2020 13:24

I see army trucks all the time on the roads near me because that's where they learn to drive them! I cold easily post a picture to Facebook and scare everyone...

TooTrueToBeGood · 18/03/2020 13:34

Army trucks? Rumours? Whatever the veiled fear is that you're trying to monger, get a grip. The army is often called in for support in times of crisis from floods to firefighter strikes to mad cow disease. They may well help with logistics, moving critical supplies around, or assembling prefab facilities or deploying their excellent medics to supplement the NHS. They will not be machinegunning looters or taking curfew-breaking pensioners away to concentration camps.

LoveSummerLife · 18/03/2020 13:39

Yes and seen video, couldn’t see a date on the dashboard to know when it was filmed but temperature said 14.5, make of that what you will.

ArtisanBreadBin · 18/03/2020 13:52

Chicken licken...

blackcat86 · 18/03/2020 13:54

DHs friend is an army reserve in UK SE and has been 'called up'. Unsure what he's doing yet.

Marieo · 18/03/2020 13:55

And?

RabbitsGoneRogue · 18/03/2020 13:55

Well said TooTrue

NcFortuna · 18/03/2020 14:00

No but I saw a man having a wee on the hardshoulder of the M20. Should I be worried?

MrsDrFC · 18/03/2020 14:13

I see military all the time as am near an RNAS base

IamDisappeared · 18/03/2020 14:19

Pretty standard stuff (although potentially escalates up to enforcing curfews etc in case of civil disorder):

Stellaris22 · 18/03/2020 14:21

Classic fear mongering and completely false

Petetongue · 18/03/2020 14:29

Definitely not false, cant see why it's fear mongering.

newyearsresolution2010 · 18/03/2020 14:31

The army have been recalled from Germany, and will be back within 48 hours. They are predicting tension at supermarkets when people can't get in, can only have a certain amount of supplies or can't get what they need. Also in case rioting starts on the streets.

GirlCalledJames · 18/03/2020 14:34

If the army help out with a fire service strike why wouldn’t you expect them to help out with this?

Drivemybluecar · 18/03/2020 14:36

Was going to say I live near an army base so helicopters , tanks etc are the norm. We also get them training around here as well. So I can’t answe that one. But I bet that is coming

sewingsinger · 18/03/2020 14:39

I have to say that I assumed that all the forces would be gearing up to be called in to help and would be very worried if there weren't plans in place!

Blobby10 · 18/03/2020 14:39

My daughter has friends in the army and they have been put on notice for a lockdown this weekend. That backs up a comment from a friend of a friend in London that I was told last week about the army being called in and dismissed as ridiculous. Can't believe its come to that already! Maybe it will just be in certain areas to start with but hopefully all these rumours are wrong.

Dyrne · 18/03/2020 14:40

For gods sake. As PP have said, they will be helping out in a similar capacity as they do in any other time of crisis. I imagine their medics will be deployed to support hospitals (I think doctors/nurses are usually attached to a hospital anyway, at least Navy ones are); and more will be helping with transport/logistics stuff. Given the high profile stuff recently with the Army helping with floods, and particularly the RAF dropping off sandbags to strengthen Whaley Bridge dam; how anyone could either be surprised the military are helping out once again is baffling.

Anyone trying to whip up hysteria about this should be ashamed of themselves. They’re not going to be standing outside Care Homes with sniper rifles picking off the elderly that break quarantine.

Petetongue · 18/03/2020 14:41

My son is in the army, he's awaiting orders now.

Shosha1 · 18/03/2020 14:41

A lot of the trucks here are taking over essential deliveries as civilian truck drivers go into isolation.

Stellaris22 · 18/03/2020 14:42

I'd expect them to be called in to help NHS and with logistics, but to be used against people is far fetched and I worry about unfounded rumours just causing more panic.

NoBoojustNo · 18/03/2020 14:42

Of course the army will be on standby.

Our woefully inadequate ppe for our frontline services will mean they are going to get sick. Someone is going to have to transport people to hospital.

If we go in to lockdown (or should I say when), we don't have enough police to keep control.

Army medics will be required too.

Dyrne · 18/03/2020 14:43

I forgot to say, that I’m sure one thing they will be helping out with is security, but it will be more to support the police etc in what they will be doing anyway and ensuring twatty criminals don’t see this time as an opportunity; it’s not exactly going to be martial law with tanks bumbling around the cul-de-sac.

Cosmos45 · 18/03/2020 14:43

This was mentioned on the radio the other day. As others have said it is essential help we require for moving stuff around etc. Getting petrol to petrol stations, food to shops etc. Nothing to fear but to be thankful we have them in reserve to help in a crisis (which this is).
