Thanks for the new thread.

I’m at work and feeling increasingly anxious. Lots of staff off today self isolating because either they or their young kids have symptoms. I’m feeling a bit scratchy of throat Sad

My parents are insisting the elderly will never be ordered to stay indoors and entertainment things wont be closed as life has to go on.

Anthony Costello, Prof Global Health UCL: "[The Government should] get the test result down, like China, from twelve days to three days."

The current test results, and therefore the figures being shown to us, are twelve days behind?

colouringinpro · 16/03/2020 10:28

Self isolating me and 2 dcs as ds developed new dry cough yesterday morning and not feeling well. I don't think I'm paranoid but I think I may be coming down with it. massive headache since yesterday morning, don't feel "right".

Feeling scared.

OldQueen1969 · 16/03/2020 10:30

Morning all,

Elbow boops of solidarity to all..... hope those who have symptoms recover quickly and that those under financial strain and worried get some relief soon.

I posted the following on another thread and thought I'd put it here.

My isolating friends are still poorly but the community is rallying round for them - however kind community support is but one part of the approach needed to address the current crisis IMO, and the lack of transparency and still conflicting messages from the Govt aren't doing anything for people's anxiety.

Anyhoo, feel free to tell me to get a grip......If you truly believe I'm way off the mark. I could be bonkers.

"OP, no, YANBU at all and I am quite terrified of the numbers of boiling frogs in the mushroom club - ie many of the UK's population.

There is a thread running with a link to a Harvard Study of cases in China that shows in a nice powerpoint display why testing and early intervention even in mild cases is vitally important, and STILL people are saying it's too difficult to test for accurate data and to make sure people are handling their symptoms correctly.

If the UK can pull billions out of its arse for the Olympics and other vanity projects when it suits, it sure as hell can find money for test kits and research and to incentivise personnel.

People's lives are at stake here, and if you allow us to sacrifice a whole bunch of the elderly and health compromised to this virus for the alleged greater economic good, you are missing the point that later down the line goalposts may change and it will be easier to accept other groups falling into the "non-essential" for treatment category, then yet more until it's you, your family, your friends (which is already happening and yet we're being told to suck it up).

Do you think our "leaders" and their families are just going to self-isolate without a test for 7 days if they come down with CV19 symptoms and only seek medical help if they get worse? They'll have their Harley Street poodles on tap from the first cough. BoJo's Dad would be on a respirator in a heartbeat.

Never mind the fact that testing and observing this disease provides the real time data needed to develop treatments and make sure the damn thing doesn't mutate over and over again as well as providing a real picture of the spread, not just a guess which might mean half the people self-isolating are doing it for a nasty cold or other flu virus with a side helping of utter fear and going stir crazy for periods that don't even tally consistently with how the virus is observed to develop so far.

8 weeks ago it was clear this was going to be a problem, 4 weeks ago it became urgent, two weeks ago it became a potential crisis. In 4 to 12 weeks time we will know just how big that crisis is, and I don't want to be cynically believing that BoJo drew the short straw in the "which country can be the petri dish for exponential growth" at the Bildeburg meeting because the UK is an island and can be cut off from the rest of the world quite easily.

But if I can start thinking like that, when I pride myself on evidence based thinking and being rational, then others will too. And some will be clamouring for blood. I don't want to see an escalation into civil unrest and the way our Govt are handling this is making it seem less fantastical by the minute.

Sorry for the rant, but I'm all out of "Keep calm and carry on" this morning."

If you are feeling ill and social media is scaring you, then it might be worth taking a break for a short period?

France going full lockdown as of Tuesday.
Government has announced people have 48 hours to get to where they need to be.

Country will then be in lockdown with 6PM curfew, road blocks and passes needed for travelling. 45 days.

sawyersfishbiscuits · 16/03/2020 10:33

My Tesco checkout lady was coughing into her hand and handling all the groceries. I've taught her kids at school so it was awkward... When it was my turn I noticed she at least had some hand gel. So I said "Ooh you'd better pop some hand gel on!"

Luckily she did... thought it was better that nothing. She then launched into a long conversation about how she's had the cough for four months and is always very clean!

Givemeabreakpls · 16/03/2020 10:34

@anonacfr where have you read this please?

SistemaAddict · 16/03/2020 10:35

Thanks for the new thread.

I am wondering what today will bring, if anything. I have no faith in our government at all. Surely all the other countries and the WHO can't be wrong but our 3 monkeys right?

WhyNotMe40 · 16/03/2020 10:36

It seems so weird that for most people life is just carrying on as normal. Can't they see what's coming?!

GobOnAStick · 16/03/2020 10:37

I dread every day now. I have been in tears over the weekend with the rising death toll. I know they said to expect it but I just feel that the Gov is doing nothing and standing by while the death toll mounts. I am so anxious.

Steven Swinford - 'Emergency Coronavirus legislation, published later this week, will give ministers power to both close schools and keep them open

'There is a significant risk some schools and childcare providers decide to close when there is no need for them to do so' '

Sunshinesky1981 · 16/03/2020 10:38

Just been to my local Tesco superstore, its absolute carnage in there. Imagine zombie apocalypse, Christmas eve and snow warning all mixed in together... only went in for a paper and a crunchie on the way to work , I dont know how the poor sods that are working at tesco are coping Sad

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 10:39

I to fear social unrest and the people who might use that to make things even worse.

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 10:40

I can see France having major issues of social unrest quite soon.

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 10:41

Adam Parsons

'Macron will speak tonight, almost certainly announcing tougher restrictions on French public life. Am told he has consulted Police and Army about how to enforce a lockdown.'

anonacfr · 16/03/2020 10:41

@Givemeabreakpls my family is French. Sister just forwarded me a notice from the French Home Office.

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 10:41

Tom Newton Dunn- 'A largely missed but crucial statement from SAGE on Saturday, confirming #COVID19 contagion is outstripping the initial modelling. "The epidemic is progressing and on that basis, the next planned effective interventions will need to be instituted soon".'

Angryrant55 · 16/03/2020 10:42

I don't think the 45 days think is being announced tonight.

QueenofmyPrinces · 16/03/2020 10:42

My friend (nurse) has had to go into work today with a cough and a slight temperature because management haven’t supported her in taking time off. She’s now working on the ward and waiting to hear from OH to see if she’s allowed to go home.

My other friend is a community nurse and is beside herself with worry about the fact she’s going to be going in and out of people’s houses with no protection.

The NHS isn’t going to suffer just in a bed shortage way, but in the way frontline staff are being put at such risk and also not allowed to take time off when they show the symptoms because the wards can’t cope with being understaffed.

It’s going to be one big downhill spiral.....

malpa · 16/03/2020 10:43

I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned, but here is an interactive map showing known cases around the world - handy for seeing how many are in your area (none in my town yet, but half a dozen in the vicinity so it won't be long):

COVID-19 Map

I thought London would look worse than that. The zoomed out map is just a mess of icons. Shock
