Would you visit a restaurant?

With the way this is all escalating, if you had arranged a family meal for Mother's Day next weekend, would you still be happy to go?

OP posts:
TheWordmeister · 15/03/2020 19:40

Yes. Until we're told not to.

MsChatterbox · 15/03/2020 19:42

I've cancelled my mother's day meal. Doing a 3 course meal at home for my mum instead.

PatchworkElmer · 15/03/2020 19:49

No, will have to cancel our table. Luckily the pub we use have a shop attached where you can buy frozen meals, so I will make a point of placing an order for those when I phone to cancel tomorrow. I feel bad for the businesses affected, but I have a very frail elderly grandparent and a husband with a chronic lung condition- not worth the risk.

TabbyMumz · 15/03/2020 19:59

"TabbyMumz

Went out for lunch today, the place was packed...I counted 50 people in there. Not one seemed to go to the bathroom to wash their hands before eating.

Tabby, what's the point? So do you think as long as you don't overreact, nothing bad going to happen to you? Sad things is that is actually true. To the people who can be happy to comment like you do, you are most likely to be have no effect by this. So you will never likely to get the worry of others who have so many concerns. Lucky you.
Enjoy going out and supporting the business."

Stormyjupiter...I wasnt sure whether to reply or not as you are clearly slightly confused. You have reacted nastily to most posts on here. My post as above, as you can see, is purely a statement of fact. Where on earth do you get " so if I dont over react, nothing bad is going to happen to me from? Was I supposed to over react whilst having lunch? How was I supposed to react? Stay in and post crazy stuff on here all day? We have not been told to avoid small gatherings...yet.
Also, you might be a bit more mindful that you know nothing about the circumstances of people on here in whether bad things have happened to them or not.

TabbyMumz · 15/03/2020 20:13

The majority of people are going out and about as normal...if not more than normal, to join queues for food shopping. So its not the case that people are hiding away, the opposite, in fact. And millions will turn up at work tomorrow ..until they are told not to. So if people are going shopping, going to work, all mingling with others, why not go to restaurants. You have to weigh up risk, and I dont yet think we are at the point of self isolation, unless we are ill. Not all areas have hundreds of cases, yet.

Stormyjupiter · 15/03/2020 20:26

Meh, whatever, Tabby. There are people who are really scared because of the chance the family can get the worst, and there are people like you.
I am not confused, I am just worried. And 50 people isn't small gathering.

TabbyMumz · 15/03/2020 20:33

Why are you attacking people, Jupiter? What are you hoping to achieve? What do you mean by "people like me?". Restaurants and cafes are open and full to the brim all over the country. As are shops, garden centres, supermarkets. Millions of people are expected to turn up to work tomorrow. This is fact. They are all following Government guidance.

TabbyMumz · 15/03/2020 20:35

A gathering of 50 people is currently allowed.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 15/03/2020 20:39

I would go out but can understand why some people would choose not to. Thing is, for the govt strategy to work they are counting on a certain percentage of people carrying on as normal and going out and about doing stuff. So, if things are simply quieter rather than empty it's actually a good thing.

Stormyjupiter · 15/03/2020 20:43

Why do you think I am attacking people? I am not. I just don't want this to spread. That is all.

Blondewolf · 15/03/2020 20:44

No not worth it

KatherineJaneway · 15/03/2020 20:51

These two sentences are contradictory.

The two sentences are not contradictory.

There are no Government rules currently in place that compel social distancing. I work in London so travel on the Tube 4 days a week. I take Government advice and am careful about washing my hands etc, that is the best I can do. I have not been told to stay at home and neither has my work said to stay at home so I go in as normal.

Life goes on and restaurants and cafes need custom, what part of that do you not understand? Do you expect everyone in the UK to stay at home like a hermit for months? Do you seriously not comprehend that many businesses will be out of business if everyone stayed at home?

BrexpatInSwitzerland · 15/03/2020 20:57

Not goingbto be up to me ...

Lockdown is being implemented around here canton by canton - it hasn't quite reached me, yet, but I'm sure it will have by tomorrow.

I've a nasty new cough and am a tad concerned that I may be infected and displaying mild symptoms. Had this not been the case, I would, indeed, have taken the chance to have one last meal out. But I'm not totally reckless and trying to think of others, too.

It's going to be a while before this is going to be an option once more. I'll miss restaurants.

Salene · 15/03/2020 21:01

No I wouldn't, people need to start social distancing to help slow the spread

TabbyMumz · 15/03/2020 21:01

"Why do you think I am attacking people? I am not. I just don't want this to spread. That is all."

Perhaps you need to read back your posts to yourself. They are very confrontational. For example, I simply commented what I had seen today, and you attacked me verbally, making stuff up completely, and commenting about "people like me" what do you mean by that? And "I will never likely get the worry of others"!! How on earth did you make that out from reading what I said? You've made that up and got carried away with yourself. Perhaps I've already had more worry than others will ever know? Did you not think of that? No you clearly didnt.
This will spread, there is no doubt about that. Kids are still going to school, every day. People are still going to work, every day. If you are so scared that you are verbally attacking everyone on here, perhaps you'd better stay indoors for the foreseeable future.

ETA:

Pretty sure this is about to happen, no matter what. Places are being ordered to close here by the hour. Many of them won't survive.

TabbyMumz · 15/03/2020 21:13

It will probably happen, but not yet. We are only just hearing rumours about over 70s being in quarantine in a number of weeks.

BrexpatInSwitzerland · 15/03/2020 21:20

TabbyMumz, see my username - I'm not in the UK at present.

It's happening over here - and we're sort of slightly behind the rest of continental Europe around here.

chomalungma · 15/03/2020 21:21

fe goes on and restaurants and cafes need custom, what part of that do you not understand

I can see that - but at the same time, we need to keep such contact to a minimum.

I am going to work - but I am not going to places like gyms or crowded pubs.

Finding that balance between isolation and carrying on as normal.

Why expose yourself to more risk than you have to?

amazedmummy · 15/03/2020 21:29

I'm torn. I wasn't too concerned but DH is a chef and several kitchen staff who really should self isolate have not and have been told to come into work. It's put me off.

copycopypaste · 15/03/2020 21:36

Yes I would unless I'm told I can't

blubellsarebells · 15/03/2020 21:48

I work in a restaurant.
We are less busy than usual but i have still come into contact with hundreds of people today.
My hands are burnt and cracked from washing so much.
Im teffified im going to catch this virus, it seems inevitable.
My anxiety is through the roof.
It scares me that so many people seem so oblivious.
I will continue to go to work until told not to.
Im going to work and school then home as much as possible.
I wont be eating out firstly to try to protect myself, logically the fewer people i contact the less chance of catching it, and also because im so worried about the financial implications and i dont have money to waste on fun and games when i might not/probably wont be getting paid next month.
I hope they lock us down sooner rather than later.

Grufallosfriends · 15/03/2020 22:31

That puts me off too!

Grufallosfriends · 15/03/2020 22:33

Do you expect everyone in the UK to stay at home like a hermit for months?

Yes I do and I'm happy to do that in order to protect the vulnerable in society.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 15/03/2020 22:34

No.
