Would you visit a restaurant?

With the way this is all escalating, if you had arranged a family meal for Mother's Day next weekend, would you still be happy to go?

@Redpriestandmozart no I don’t have a public facing role. I do work in an open plan building with about 80 people and I am becoming more and more anxious🙁 I have a laptop so could work from home but no-one knows about my condition, apart from my boss, so I’m sure it would cause a few raised eyebrows! We don’t have a culture of wfh so it all just feels very difficult. I would prefer it if I had something from my consultant or gp or the government to say this is what should happen.

MissBax · 15/03/2020 12:40

Please don’t stop using local businesses. We have families to feed, wages to pay, mortgages to pay. We are not rich, or even well off. We barely scrape by as a fairly new business.

Please don't guilt trip people into mingling with strangers during this time.

Everyone needs to be taking sensible steps to avoid contamination, and the best way to do that is self isolating if vulnerable or displaying symptoms, or by social distancing if you are a healthy person.

Scruffyoak · 15/03/2020 12:41

Yes

Floralnomad · 15/03/2020 12:43

We tried to have lunch out on Friday whilst shopping and the place we had chosen was so busy we didn’t bother as we didn’t want to wait for a table . I’m currently not doing anything that I don’t usually do although dh has been told he’s to WFH from tomorrow .

Redpriestandmozart · 15/03/2020 12:45

@Littlemiss74 I'm sure if I do get the WFH (which I have my doubts about) one's in the next office will notice me missing and think I have it but I suppose you can't blame people for being suspicious.

Good luck in organising WFH and keep safe. I carry a wash bag with me everywhere I won't rely on stock in any bathroom. I carry dettol wipes, a bar of soap, nail brush, alcohol gel and a roll of kitchen roll to dry and my hands and opens doors. It looks a bit extreme but it is the measures I must take.

SausageCrush · 15/03/2020 12:46

Dh & I we're out last night and I'm pleased to say the town was buzzing.
Very few cases here yet and both of us are healthy.
I have no intention of contributing to wrecking the local economy.
Obviously that would change if we get ill or they are forced to close by the powers that be.

MissBax · 15/03/2020 12:49

I have no intention of contributing to wrecking the local economy.

But contributing to the rapid decline in public health, well that's just fine?

PlomBear · 15/03/2020 12:50

Yes.

KatherineJaneway · 15/03/2020 12:51

Yes but I'm not in an at risk category if it get it.

MissBax · 15/03/2020 12:52

You do realise it's not just about whether YOU'RE at risk though, right?

DishingOutDone · 15/03/2020 12:58

I wouldn't. I do have something arranged for a couple of weeks time, I am thinking I might have to cancel (its just a cafe meet up). I think a lot of business of all sizes will go to the wall over this.

If you think of places that need personal contact, gyms, beauticians, restaurants and cafes, hairdressers, theatres, cinemas etc. The list just goes on and on. Very quickly, over the next couple of weeks, these places will empty. Don't forget the lady posting from Italy today saying she has to have a permit to leave her house to go food shopping and everything else is closed.

We are living through something unpredictable, that we have never experienced before. Its reasonable to suspect that things will get worse before they get better.

Poppydaisies · 15/03/2020 13:02

We're facing a major unknown pandemic! I understand that lots of business will suffer, but surely the nation's health is far far more important.

Social distancing is very important. Going out only if necessary. Certainly not going out for leisure to a confined space with lots of unknown people and ingesting food that has potentially been prepared by an infected person? Or worse, sneezed on?!

jay55 · 15/03/2020 13:03

I'm in Starbucks right now and can see people eating in several places. It's a little quieter than normal, but not drastically different.
Im not too worried, not sat too close to anyone.

If the restaurant is everyone elbow to elbow I'd probably steer clear. But then lots may cancel and it be nice and quiet...

Poppydaisies · 15/03/2020 13:04

In addition, you might spread the virus to others, who might have vulnerable family members etc.

abitoflight · 15/03/2020 13:06

I'm only going to quiet places. In pub now v quiet and it's freshly cleaned
Wouldnt go out to Mother's Day lunch as may be busy

LaChatte · 15/03/2020 13:07

Last weekend life was totally normal here (France) apart from being told to wash hands, I went out for a meal with my 60+ yo parents, we did the usual hugging and kissing. This weekend we are on lockdown, it's quite surreal. If I could go back a week, I probably wouldn't have eaten out last weekend.

Poppydaisies · 15/03/2020 13:08

The pub may be cleaned, but how do you know that those preparing your food and pouring your drinks aren't infected? One cough or sneeze on your plate or drink...?!

ParkheadParadise · 15/03/2020 13:09

Yes

happymrsc · 15/03/2020 13:11

Nope, was meant to be having a baby shower type thing next week but will be cancelling. Not worth the risks

Grufallosfriends · 15/03/2020 13:13

No I definitely wouldn't because as PP have pointed out you don't know the histories or health of any of the other diners, staff or how well the place is cleaned etc. Unfortunately you can't see the virus.

We're only going out if absolutely necessary eg grocery shopping. But I'm careful to wash my hands afterwards. I certainly wouldn't eat food that was prepared by someone whose health we know nothing about.

jdy123 · 15/03/2020 13:14

I'm 20 weeks pregnant and I'm really put off going social places atm.

Mylittlepony374 · 15/03/2020 13:16

No. Social Distance.

happymummy12345 · 15/03/2020 13:19

Well people are still going to the restaurant my husband works in. He says it's been as busy as it always is.

Grufallosfriends · 15/03/2020 13:19

If you think about how we're not supposed to touch our face with potentially unwashed hands and then consider eating food prepared by others? You really need to know with certainty that they're not ill (even without symptoms) and have just washed their hands...

I wouldn't in these circumstances.

LucheroTena · 15/03/2020 13:24

Definitely.

I work in a hospital and commute on the filthy tube. Eating at a nice clean restaurant is pretty low risk by comparison.
