Who is doing what?

I wish I could work from home, but I can't, and am worried about commuting.

Teacher with a mild dry cough. Self isolating.

Dibdabdobdop · 15/03/2020 13:56

@8dayweek that's a good idea. I will do that thank you. I'm off tomorrow anyway, had the day booked off ages ago for an event that's now been cancelled but it will give me time to work something out.

theDudesmummy · 15/03/2020 13:58

NHS staff. Will be at work.

Lovemusic33 · 15/03/2020 13:59

I work as a support worker and will be going to work as normal unless told otherwise.

Carrie7469 · 15/03/2020 14:00

I’m going into the office. Could easily WFH but my boss doesn’t want everyone working from home even though they quite easily could. Bloody idiot. I’m furious.

jewel1968 · 15/03/2020 14:00

For those of you that can easily work from home but your workplace won't endorse it until Gov explicitly says so, do you know why they are taking this stance? If it has no business impact why are they being so rigid? Doesn't make sense to me.

@daisychain01 you mention that Government Guidelines already recommend that if an employee can wfh they should be permitted to. Are you able to share a link?

stickerqueen · 15/03/2020 14:02

I've got to go to the shops tomorrow to try and get some of the items that didn't come with the delivery yesterday.
Dd will be going to school until they tell us otherwise.

MrsMGE · 15/03/2020 14:04

Jewel - I have a CEO in his 60s who is not used to remote working, partially tech-savvy but with a major distrust people would actually work as much as they should from home. My boss is very different and so is our entire team, but trying to get through to him is like hitting your head into a brick wall, he's surrounded by a bunch of like-minded old boys (who often "work away from the office" as part of "business development", let me add).

PleaseNoFortnite · 15/03/2020 14:04

I have to go in as I work in the NHS and my work is directly connected to SARSCoV2.

My DH was sent home last week and is WFH, they've shut the office and everyone is conducting meetings over Skype (developers/software engineers). The kids are still going to school but I doubt if it's for much longer, I'm expecting that we'll be hearing from them soon.

It's worrying to hear about all the employers that haven't yet got the message, especially the people who have sick relatives at home, or don't really need to go in to work.

Advice is clear that people should self isolate if they have anyone with even a cold at home (even if it's just a cold, you may pass it on to someone who might then take up a bed in hosp).

People who don't have it and can work from home should do so to reduce the rate of spread.

People who think that we're panicking unnecessarily should hear from other countries about what's gone on there, and reflect that it's not for ever, and that if we have anyone who we can save from dying because we just don't have enough ventilators or staff to care for them then 3/4 months of inconvenience will be worth it.

dollface19 · 15/03/2020 14:05

I'm not sure whether I should go into work !! I'm due in this week and work in an office of 2000 people where 3 people got sent home last week with a cough , but nothing confirmed! Just as precaution! We cannot work from home.
I have asthma and in 30s but my asthma can get bad when I've had the flu before and I just don't want to risk it !

SnoozyLou · 15/03/2020 14:07

I work from home but will have DS home from nursery for the foreseeable. I'm getting on for 6 months pregnant and just trying to limit any risks as much as we can. DP will be going to work but is very isolated and wears gloves most of the time.

elfycat · 15/03/2020 14:07

DD1 had a fever (always boils hot on the first day of a cold ) on Thursday (productive cough, nosebleeds, better 48 hours later) but no school for a week to follow guidelines.

We've kept 2 metres away from her at all times, and I didn't tuck her into bed with me to help with the nosebleeds through the night -- said NO parent ever. It is just her usual seasonal cold though.

I have work to do from home (setting up an online shop), but need to post a couple of bits out - if post offices shut I'll suspend larger items and only send out from my local post box, with a warning to customers that the post might be delayed.

DD2 can go to school, she doesn't have any underlying medical issues and is well. DH works at sea, and I'm not sure what will happen next week with that as some of the crew have been abroad and might not get back or might be ill.

I'm guessing our trip to Disneyland Paris next month is buggered. Got the tickets in the post, and an email asking us if we want to rebook on the same day

supafish · 15/03/2020 14:08

I'm working 9 hours with a patient tomorrow, and Im a Mariecurie nurse so no plans to self isolate .

mumto3boysHE · 15/03/2020 14:08

I agree to there being some confusion at the moment.

We run our own business which is service based. I worked from home for many years at the end of the phone /computer but have recently rented an office for a better work /life balance. So I could carry on as usual working from my office. However, DH has pneumonia, recently out of hospital, and is staying home for the foreseeable.

I potentially run the risk of infecting him every time I come home, as do our 3 DS who are at work or college.

DH might have to completely self isolate, that will be interesting... Hmm

Fortunately, we have the correct type of PPE to protect ourselves and, interestingly, the equipment to sanitise our house, office and vehicles, along with the disinfectant for corona virus so we will be doing that on a regular basis for ourselves and friends and family, neighbours etc. I would offer it as a chargeable service but our insurance underwriters are assessing potential liability and won't give us a green light at the moment.

MrsMGE · 15/03/2020 14:10

And he's more worried they'd have to pay admin staff for doing nothing as they can't work from home. But the point is, us fee earners (law firm) actually wouldn't mind and we know our support staff will work extra hard, doing extra hours after the event when we're all back in. They deserve to be paid.

The firm should be listening to us regarding our preferences. Everyone needs to stay healthy if possible - goes without saying. From the financial point of view, we're making money for everyone's wages and we should be allowed not to get out and wfh so the entire business doesn't go under. We've got multiple offices, same policy so far.

It's bonkers.

rosesandcashmere · 15/03/2020 14:12

Cabin crew and I'm down to work tomorrow and still flying at this current time. I've no qualms about it to be honest.

PirateWeasel · 15/03/2020 14:12

Depends on how DS is. He's still got the remains of a cold so nursery might not want him. I can WFH but DH can't. Dreading how things will pan out if he doesn't get paid for weeks on end.

WillYouDoTheFandango · 15/03/2020 14:16

My office has been closed for refurb for the last two months. Due to reopen week after next. We’re able to travel to other offices but we’re all free to refuse to travel internationally should we be asked.

Think I’ll just carry on wfh even once the office reopens, it’s been fine for the last 2 months so no reason why they should object now.

DS will be going to school. DP works in sport and they’re still waiting to hear the plan for them.

Awrite · 15/03/2020 14:17

Yes, all four of us out tomorrow as usual. I'm a teacher, 2 kids at school and dh who can usually easily wfh, has to go in due to where he is on his current project.

I reckon schools will be closed by the end of the week.

DameHannahRelf · 15/03/2020 14:21

I'll keep going to work as long as we stay open/I still have a job/my temperature stays under 37.8%

DameHannahRelf · 15/03/2020 14:22

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/03/2020 14:25

DD1 is back from uni as it's finished for Easter.
DH works in a factory and is going to work.
DD2 is in the middle of her mocks and is reluctantly going in as usual.
I'll probably be going in as usual to be breathed on and touched by 30 kids. Although I do have an ear infection and need to get an appt tomorrow to let them know it hasn't got better by itself in a week - I suspect it will end up being a phone appt.

jewel1968 · 15/03/2020 14:26

@MrsMGE That must be sooo frustrating. And ill judged. I don't personally like working from home as I get bored but I know several people who work from home almost 100% and they are the most productive people. One of the reasons I like to go into the office is I like to chat to people why is why I don't like working at home. I am way more productive working at home.

It's all about trust isn't it? Very frustrating.

weegiemum · 15/03/2020 14:27

I'm disabled and home full time. I've decided not to see any of my after-school tuition pupils as I'm immune compromised.

Ds and dd2 will be going to school as normal. Dd1 is self isolating but at her own flat, not here.

Dh is a GP. He's already worked the weekend but will work as normal tomorrow, until he gets it when he'll still have to work manning the phones.

ScorpionQueen · 15/03/2020 14:28

I'm a teacher, I'll go in as long as I am well. If school shuts I'll offer childcare, dog walking, shopping etc. but if myself or a family member is ill, we'll self isolate.
