Who is doing what?

I wish I could work from home, but I can't, and am worried about commuting.

I'm going in although I really don't want to as I'm very high risk. Worried about commute and working in a large open plan office where germs always seem to fly around! Company won't allow to wfh until govt guidance changes, even though my job could easily be done from home and I'm all set up for it!

In your situation, if you are "very high risk" and you are set up to work from home already, I would be getting a statement from your GP (or potentially your employer may already have put RAs in place for you?) to state your vulnerability (especially if you have DC) and force your employer to comply. They are idiots, Government Guidelines already recommend that if an employee can wfh they should be permitted to.

No job is worth your life. No employer has the right to issue a death sentence over you. You will be protected for your decision, they can't just sack you if you have valid justification to wfh and can be as effective at home as you are in the office.

I work in a supermarket. I’m 60. I have asthma. I live in an area where 7 cases of of CV have been confirmed.
I have no symptoms, but have just rung up work for advice - during my shift tomorrow I will probably serve several hundred people and I’m concerned about my exposure and risk.
Work have told me if I have symptoms I stay off, otherwise I go in.
I tried to explain that I’m in a higher risk category but they weren’t having it.
Am I worrying unduly? What do you do?

Mordred · 15/03/2020 13:35

I will be, unfortunately.

With the job I do (web developer), I could easily work from home, all I need to have is my laptop and an internet connection. But the boss refuses to countenance the idea and is joking about people panicking too much.

daisychain01 · 15/03/2020 13:36

My post above is for @IllustriousToad and anyone in a vulnerable category whose employer is refusing them the ability to work from home, even though it's possible to do so.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 15/03/2020 13:37

I'm not at work until Thursday. Can't really do my job (emergency despatch) from home :/. Already had one self-isolate after spending the shift coughing. Now DH and I are both coughing Sad
And I'm in 2 risk groups: diabetes and cancer. Bollocks! And I've got an upcoming operation.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 15/03/2020 13:37

I work in primary care so will be going in until told otherwise. Fortunately I drive to work so no public transport.

GP's are phone triaging to avoid people coming into surgery, unless they need to.

HoldMyLobster · 15/03/2020 13:38

Going into work tomorrow and this week fully expect to be made redundant as are hundreds of thousands in the hospitality and tourist industry within the next month.

I'm so sorry - we are in the same industry and are assuming the company will go bankrupt.

LargeGinOnTap · 15/03/2020 13:39

I work in a school which haven't been closed so will be usual routine

Stopyourhavering64 · 15/03/2020 13:40

I'm a hospital based nurse, but also on immunosuppressant medication for autoimmune illness- so classed as vulnerable ...and obviously can't work from home!
Fortunately currently I'm on annual leave but monitoring situation closely and will contact occy health and my manager for clarification ...no guidance as of yet

JKScot4 · 15/03/2020 13:42

Why are people with no symptoms or risk self isolating? It’s unneccessary panicking.
Stay in for a few weeks in good health come out and catch it? I find this irrational.

OutOntheTilez · 15/03/2020 13:42

I live on the U.S. East Coast. We're now required to work from home and have been doing so since the middle of last week.

Maryann1975 · 15/03/2020 13:42

I’m a childminder so will be continuing to work unless I am forced to close by the government. My families include parents who work for the nhs, fire service and in education, they work so I work. Dh works in manufacturing so will be going in as normal. I can’t imagine them shutting unless forced (although dh has said this morning if we enter a massive recession after all this, will anyone be buying what the factory has made?

Dh will be going to school as normal.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 15/03/2020 13:44

There will be many of us out and about tomorrow. Maybe we can have a secret signal? Grin

Stay safe everyone!

It's social distancing. It's a good thing to stop some of the spread. People shouldn't be going out and about unless they need to.

Dibdabdobdop · 15/03/2020 13:47

@BendyLikeBeckham I spoke to my employer yesterday as I started to get ill during my work shift so they know that I have symptoms but told me I have to come in unless I'm phsyically too sick to get out of bed. I've been bringing in antibacterial gel to clean my hands as much as I can during shifts. Even if I had no symptoms I really would prefer to stay home at the moment because I'm worried for my own health. We come into contact with so many people. I have underlying health issues including asthma so I'm scared. Had a customer cough all over me yesterday, made no attempt to cover it and didn't even apologise. Rude under any circumstances but during this it is just unbelievable.

I am terrible at lying but maybe I will have to exaggerate about this so I can stay home. I wish I hadn't spoken to them yesterday because they might guess that I am well enough to work and that I'm trying to self isolate. I feel so stressed about it all. I wish they'd just close the shop for the time being. We don't sell any items that could be considered essential by anyone.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/03/2020 13:47

I'm going to work, I need to to pay the bills and can't WFH. DS going into school.

JKScot4 · 15/03/2020 13:48

@Beuatifull
Social distancing is sensible precautions but to completely isolate with no symptoms is OTT, it is not a guarantee you won’t catch it.

Jay135 · 15/03/2020 13:49

My wife isn’t going in as she has a cough and fever that has developed this week. She teaches 6:7 year olds. One of her colleagues will be off too

Snorkelface · 15/03/2020 13:50

Working until I'm told not to. Also due to lose my job soon anyway so in a very strange place, wondering if I'll get laid off sooner than planned. Ho hum.

8dayweek · 15/03/2020 13:50

Also Civil Service - will be going in and seeing what happens next. Thankfully I do have a laptop (it's not particularly common place in my directorate), although much of my job is customer facing so we'll see what happens!

Bunnyfuller · 15/03/2020 13:51

DH off work at the mo. I have a cardiac rehab session at a public gym in the morning then straight into work (emergency services L and D). I’m expecting to be more or less turned round and sent to wfh as I have heart problems.

8dayweek · 15/03/2020 13:52

@Dibdabdobdop Why not call 111 and see what they say. If your employer continues to dick about, you'll have a record that you were following the medical advice given to you.

choc71 · 15/03/2020 13:53

I teach, I'll be at work.

Nottsangel2015 · 15/03/2020 13:54

Our company has relaxed our wfh policy so people can work from home at their own discretion . I shall be going in tomorrow as I'm finance manager and we are holding financial planning meeting tomorrow to develop a strategy to try and cope with the oncoming situation. As my role is very important at rhe moment I will probably wfh 2/3 days a week rather than - and come into the office 2/3 days. If the situation worsens then I will just work from home. Luckily our whole company is geared up to work from home and we are having our first total company wfh day this week as a trial. I feel lucky to work In such a place. We are set up to do all meetings virtually should we need to.

DwayneBenzie · 15/03/2020 13:54

We started WFH trials two weeks ago and stepped it up to 50/50 across all teams by Friday last week. As of tomorrow we are going to 100% WFH, the only exceptions are a handful of key senior staff (we are a large organisation). Been advised that this is likely to be for weeks.

I have had to rearrange the house to create a proper desk area, I would have gone bonkers trying to work at the kitchen table or on the sofa for weeks on end!

How are all the other new WFHers coping? Is there a thread? If not maybe we should start one!
