Sorry if this has already been asked but does anyone know if Dove soap works against viruses? As they like to say it's not a "soap" but a moisturising beauty bar so I guess that means it wouldn't break down any lipids so wouldn't kill viruses? I was going to buy some today but then had second thoughts.

SubjectMatterExpert · 14/03/2020 02:01

I THINK it is SLS’s which are the important ingredient? I imagine Dove HAS that/those. I asked someone earlier what they meant by ‘proper soap’ but never saw a reply. So, look for Sodiam Laural Sulphate as an ingredient

But tbh washing with any soap mechanically removed antigens if you do it effectively

SubjectMatterExpert · 14/03/2020 02:05

Yes it is SLS. Found this in another www.vox.com/science-and-health/2020/3/11/21173187/coronavirus-covid-19-hand-washing-sanitizer-compared-soap-is-dope

Lynamic · 14/03/2020 02:36

Viruses are not living. When you wash away the bubbles the virus is stuck to them. It's fine to be surrounded by vius in surfaces as long as you don't get it in your mouth eyes or nose. Personally I'm more concerned about people coughing everywhere I go.

Yep

tobee · 14/03/2020 03:21

I'm finding it so hard not to touch my face. If it's itchy I'm scratching my face with my glasses arms, but I keep finding I'm resting on my hand when I'm concentrating. Trying to keep it away from orifices! GrinTrying to keep my hands clean SmileUsing different parts of my anatomy ti do things instead of my hands! Hmm

tobee · 14/03/2020 03:22

The tops of my hands feel like lizard skins. Confused

TeaAndDarkToast · 14/03/2020 03:50

On the radio they were advising against bar soap unless you do not share with anyone else. Apparently it has to be completely dry before the next person uses it otherwise the virus is just passed round on the wet bar. They also said if hand soap is too harsh to buy body wash instead.

TeaAndDarkToast · 14/03/2020 03:50

sorry BBC local radio station.

Maighdeann · 14/03/2020 04:12

Is there evidence you become immune after catching it?

I wonder how much this really matters in real time though. Just thinking about DH and I sharing a bar of soap - we also share a bed, a car, and door handles. Not to mention physical contact.

Kuponut · 14/03/2020 04:44

There's a huge list of universities going online on the student room. Mine is demanding us in like normal but at least the care homes we go in for placement have announced they're stopping visitors now.

middleager · 14/03/2020 06:28

Thanks for the new thread.
Husband slumbering away without a care.

I wish schools and unis would shut now. I didn't sign the petition (I work in an education setting and have a child doing an early GCSE) but now I think is enough.

Bogoffrain · 14/03/2020 06:30

1st case of a newborn baby having it in London so does the mother. it’s terrible

whereareyousleep · 14/03/2020 06:39

Wehttam
It is one of those 2 opticians I darent say which we have already been warned about talking about it online. We have been told to watch for people presenting with viral conjunctivitis by the governing bodies as that can apparently be a sign but that is all. I'm leaving for work in a couple of hours and I'm just really worried I'm also really surprised that we are still testing 80-100 people per day probably half of them over 60. Please people unless it's an emergency don't come in you are putting people who have no choice but to be there at risk.

lubeybooby · 14/03/2020 06:46

why is there another new thread when thread 25 only has 874 messages?

VivaLeBeaver · 14/03/2020 06:56

@Kuponut can you link to the thread on TSR, I’d like to see a list of unis and can’t find the thread. Thanks.

TheElementsOfMedical · 14/03/2020 06:57

I saw that optimistic thread about the government's special British strategy last night. I'm only a molecular biologist, not an epidemiologist. But if that is the strategy, I don't see how that works in real life.

The overall idea is to manage the "flow" of patients from the vulnerable population requiring treatment by tuning the rate of infection, whilst ensuring in the background a steady stream of young healthy firebreaks get infected and then immune without requiring medical attention (hence the idea of keeping schools open as long as possible).

Firstly, young healthy firebreaks, e.g. children, don't exist in isolation from the vulnerable population. They encounter teachers and other staff in schools, and they come home to their parents.

Secondly, the experience of other countries suggests that a lot of the vulnerable population, once they become ill, spend many weeks in hospital. So you'd need to "tune" your infection rate with a many weeks lead time. And we hardly have slack in the healthcare system to treat the population, as it stands - even with the NHS gearing up as best it can, and with the non-existent measures that will supposedly "flatten the peak" you'd have to gamble on really tightly controlling that flow of patients.

Thirdly, people are people not mathematical models. Fuck knows what they're going to do when the penny drops and they see people getting sick and dying in large numbers.

Finally, this tweet:
7.The risk is being able to accurately manage infection flow relative to health case resources. Data on infection rates needs to be accurate, the measures they introduce need to work and at the time they want them to and to the degree they want, or the system is overwhelmed.

As our esteemed leader said, and was immediately echoed enthusiastically by supporters all over these threads with most fervent belief, we're going to stop general testing and only test people in hospital, and discourage anybody from even directly contacting the authorities at all whilst they exhibit only mild illness. Because "it's a waaaaaaaste of resources so whyyyyyyy do we need know anything about infection rates" Hmm In other words, we are explicitly saying that we don't want accurate data on infection rates in the population.

VivaLeBeaver · 14/03/2020 06:57

Oh, found it!

I couldn’t sleep last night from anxiety and kept thinking of the recent Chris Packham documentary about the world being overpopulated. This virus looks intent on helping out that problem. I’m scared for my family and I but also I feel scared for those in less developed countries. It’ll run rampant through slums in no time.

SubjectMatterExpert · 14/03/2020 07:13

@Maighdeann no there is no evidence that you become immune after having it. I read somewhere in fact that people are catching it multiple times

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 07:16

I keep going through waves but does anyone think that singly putting in place new behaviour before shutting things was a good idea.

We need the fear response to react and change so yes messages are going to be blunt not couched.

I’m not sure about some new stuff coming out yet but maybe will make more sense.

VeraPamil · 14/03/2020 07:30

The problem is a lot of people don’t have a fear response to this. My —idiot— husband told me this morning that there’s no point washing his hands because someone will just cough on him anyway and besides we just need to let it move through the population, most people won’t even notice they have it anyway.

This despite me being a community pharmacist and also having had a transplant...

CZECH REPUBLIC— The government has decided to close all shops with the exception of grocery stores, pharmacies & petrol stations. #coronavirus
