St Andrews (daughter there, plus friends work there) are about to start 2 week break but prepping to go largely online. Oxford (son there) have now finished term for 6 weeks but are going course by course and making decisions.

My son is at Birmingham City Uni and my son was told to work from home and leave his accommodation and go back home if possible. His friend is at Liverpool and told the same thing so he's home too.

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 14/03/2020 10:56

Anyone else who's reliant on GPs doing the school run struggling to make alternative arrangements? DMIL does it 3-4 times a week. I've now put a stop to it but work aren't that supportive of giving us the flexibility to manage it while we organise an alternative Sad Certainly no prospect of WfH.

I will have to do it anyway. DH's work will prob be more understanding.

I made that bold out of habit from quoting other posters' threads Blush

magicrainbowbeans · 14/03/2020 10:57

I would expect to see most Universities doing this in the coming week.

wherearemychickens · 14/03/2020 10:58

Ohmymg, my DD has a cough left over from a heavy cold that started Sunday last week. The cough started Tuesday, so we are taking it that it's a persistent cough that's new to her, and the 7 day isolation starts at onset of symptoms and she won't be going back to school until next Wednesday.

Jet2 have cancelled all holidays in Spain and the Canary and Balearic islands 'with immediate effect'.

It comes after flights to Spain were returning to the UK after being turned around 'mid-air' this morning.

ifonly4 · 14/03/2020 11:00

Uni of Edinburgh, DD's lectures have gone online and exams cancelled end April/May. She's at home at the moment due to strikes and illness, but plans to travel back up and get her stuff into store mid week, as she's got no reason to be there. Her friends have booked international flights in the hope they can get home.

Delatron · 14/03/2020 11:01

Ah ok so Italy hasn’t peaked yet and we are a couple of weeks behind.

We’re trying to flatten the peak (with timed measures) to push the peak in to Spring/summer.

So any talk of a ‘peak’ is speculation.

Michelleoftheresistance · 14/03/2020 11:02

I've had a news alert on my phone this morning about emergency laws to 'force' schools to stay open. Anyone any more information about this, is it just an exaggerated headline?

Considering that while parents can dereg their children if those children are vulnerable or if there are vulnerable people at home, school staff many of whom are in the same position will potentially be forced to expose themselves regardless if schools are made to stay open by law.

We keep hearing about 'the vulnerable will be 'cocooned' (starting to loathe that word) which is apparently some vague thing that may happen at some vague point in this experiment, but there's quite a lot of these people and many of them work for a living. I've already heard people in various points of education talk about getting unions involved about them being subjected to unacceptable risk.

Red

The thread from Liverpool professor is very convincing.
I totally understand that rationale.

Turning and turning off taps, etc.

But having been in the NHS a few years ago at this time of year, where dc get seasonal respitory illness, as well as the usual illness, flu, the elderly without covid I could see the NHS could not cope.

The government plan needs a shit hot NHS behind it and we simply do not have that.

MacronsPensWiper · 14/03/2020 11:05

Michelle my work is a huge employer of older people, many staff are grandparent themselves!

Forgone90 · 14/03/2020 11:06

I was reading something the other day about the government wanting us to realise ourselves how serious it is. By doing this when they introduce the lock downs etc we will be much more compliant and we will be relieved that they bring in additional measures rather than frustrated... Quite clever actually if this is the reason they have not done much yet!

There is evidence to suggest it works as many people I know that were poo pooing it weeks ago are not becoming more sensible to the idea it is a serious situation!

RedToothBrush · 14/03/2020 11:06

I suspect that Cummings is a Darwinist

There is no suspecting on this. He's not exactly silent on his views in this area.

Alone07 · 14/03/2020 11:06

My 4 year old has a high temperature and cough although it does seem more productive then dry.
I'm not feeling great either, more stuffy nose, slightly aching and a bit of a sore throat.
I am sleep deprived though as been up with dd, how are people ment to self isolate if have young children?
I also have 2 autistic children, and a husband who has to work.
What are people doing if the main carer has to self isolate but have other children? Esp when they need to go to school.
I can not see many people wanting to take the children to school if the childrens parents are self isolating.
Is it a case of the whole house isolating? From what I've read it's only if you have symptoms.

SansaSnark · 14/03/2020 11:09

I guess the emergency laws for schools are things like reducing class size restrictions etc- to try and keep schools open for as long as possible.

Exochord · 14/03/2020 11:09

First weird experience of coronavirus. Parked in a deserted (usually busy) car park where some random dodgy looking bloke was hanging out for no reason. I saw him so I remained in my car. He hid from me! I saw him peeping to see if I’d got out yet, so I drove away. Now wondering if the fact that public spaces are more deserted will make it less safe to go out?

WokClock · 14/03/2020 11:11

I’ve rejoined you after a few days off. Interesting that there’s not so many people coming on now and saying that we’re scaremongering and it’s just flu!

SansaSnark · 14/03/2020 11:12

@Alone07 It sounds like your 4yo should be isolated at least- but this is obviously going to be tricky, and realistically might mean you isolating too. Can you call in any favours to help you with the school run for the next week?

WokClock · 14/03/2020 11:13

@Forgone90 I agree with that.

ElfDragon · 14/03/2020 11:13

Alone07 - I am a single mum to 3 dc with ASD. If either my eldest (due to severity of need) or youngest (due to age - only 7) need to be isolated, then I would have to stay with them, so no one going to school. If it is my middle child needing isolation, then depending on how ill she is, I could leave her while taking the others to school (which is current advice, I think - only the ill person self isolates).

Likelihood is that if any of us need to isolate, then we will all isolate. Logistically, it doesn’t work very well any other way, as can’t leave oldest or youngest alone anyway. Due to our situation I have a reasonable store of food (NOT a stockpile - have always had a good store of food since the time a few years ago when I couldn’t leave the house for about 3 months due to various combinations of ASD issues - instigated rigorous freezer storage and rotation since then, always have flour/yeast for bread, tins of fruit etc) so isolation for all of us would just about work (apart from cabin fever!)
