@Lumene

Its a theoretical immunity. In fact no one knows if it occurs or if it will help in this case. The UK government have adopted it to justify doing as little as possible.

SistemaAddict · 14/03/2020 08:46

I've posted on the old thread too. I'm upset reading threads of people who live day to day with food yet have children and so have no buffer. People who can't afford to do a decent sized shop online that will last them a couple of weeks. We should be like Germany who advise everyone to have 10 days worth of supplies in in case of whatever. I'll be raising my children to do this once they leave home.
I'm going to make bread and soup today. Comfort cooking and baking. And eating!

Are we expecting an update from BJ at any point this weekend?

LarkDescending · 14/03/2020 08:46

@Lumene Dominic Cummings and his team of “superforecasters” have no doubt already pinpointed when that moment will occur.

IrisAtwood · 14/03/2020 08:47

I suspect that Cummings is a Darwinist.

Reastie · 14/03/2020 08:49

I wonder if the mass gathering figure would be whatever number of people anticipated means the organisers have to have St. John’s ambulance in attendance (or whatever the set up is for these things) so they can keep them for higher importance stuff.

MarshaBradyo · 14/03/2020 08:50

Cummings is good at messages but not all leading of it, ie the science.

WhyNotMe40 · 14/03/2020 08:51

My youngest (3) has been out of sorts with a bit of a cough and a gunky eye these last few days. Bit of a temperature for him (he generally runs low like the rest of the family) but not above 37.8 (was 37.6 when he normally runs as 36.3)
I wasn't worried until I heard that COVID19 can cause viral conjunctivitis!
So does this mean I have to isolate with him? Given I bed share etc. I'm a teacher....

WhyNotMe40 · 14/03/2020 08:52

Oh and you can't use the online NHS 111 thing for under 5s

LarkDescending · 14/03/2020 08:53

Frankly if the so-called science of superforecasting was that good surely they would have forecast the virus and headed it off at the pass.

Is there any specific gathering number that requires ambulances? If a school has 1200 pupils and 350 staff then even if they all gather in the hall for assembly there is no ambulance requirement, is there?

ofwarren · 14/03/2020 08:53

#whynotme40
It's not a cough or a high temperature so I guess not.
This new guideline is so confusing though.

From the HSE website:

First aid, medical assistance and ambulances

As well as workers, HSE strongly recommends that you include the visiting public in your first-aid, medical and ambulance needs assessment. Make sure you will have enough medical assistance and ambulances onsite and liaise with your local NHS and ambulance service so they can balance your needs against their local capacity.

Except for small, low-risk events where ambulances may not be required, and at events where they are not onsite, plans should be drawn up in conjunction with the local NHS ambulance service to clarify how patients will be taken to hospital.

It seems that the need for ambulances (or not) is a matter for the event organiser having performed a risk assessment.

I can't afford or have the space to do a 2 week food shop and I have two under 6. It's terrifying.

@VivaLeBeaver this is a paste of the current uni list. In our local area there's a distinct picture of the ex polys being stubborn and also quite confrontational with concerned students

Universities stopping face-to-face teaching so far include:

  • Durham
  • MMU
  • Lancaster
  • Southampton
  • Harper Adams (anecdotal)
  • Leicester
  • UCL (anecdotal)
  • LSE
  • KCL
  • Birkbeck
  • Nottingham
  • Glasgow
  • Essex
  • Loughborough
  • Liverpool (anecdotal)
  • Westminster
  • Sheffield
  • Bristol (anecdotal)
  • Northumbria
  • Portsmouth
  • (Potentially) Uni of Birmingham
  • Edinburgh
  • Queen Mary
  • Aberdeen

(Possibly) Cambridge soon

Sunderland have recalled some placement students.

(Correct as of 21:02, 13th March)

Middle of this week our staff were saying they saw no issue with us being on placements in care homes. Over night it seems most of the homes have taken action themselves and stopped visitors but none of us can get responses from the uni staff about it all (as usual)

Social media team reinforcing they expect us all in on Monday as normal and I'm not putting family members at risk who have health conditions. I'm expecting an attendance warning by the end of the week!

Ohmymg · 14/03/2020 09:33

Sunderland uni sent us a business as usual email yesterday to be reviewed on Tuesday evening. After my three hour seminar on Tuesday. People on my course who have health issues are not attending, including those who have children with health issues

littledrummergirl · 14/03/2020 09:34

The RVC haven't closed but they have suggested students stay away and have put plans in place to teach remotely. At least that was the gist of Ds1 email the other day.

DonkeyKong2019 · 14/03/2020 09:38

Spain have turned around a lot of UK planes heading towards them

Eeyoresstickhouse · 14/03/2020 09:39

BU have said business as usual but they are reviewing day to day. They have lots of alternative scenarios in place and it is going to correspond with PHE advice as to which way it goes. They did mention finishing for Easter break early but that doesn't help the 2k staff!

Qwaffee · 14/03/2020 09:41

Anyone else starting to feel they almost want to catch it now? Get it over and done with to stop the anxiety and fear and then move on, help others etc? Having a bad time so far today but grateful for everyone on here for their support. Thank you guys x

Workers across the country say they have been laid off
DH’s employer has sacked 10 people in sales and warehouse because product isn’t coming in from Europe and product isn’t going out because buyers aren’t buying.

My friend works for Newcastle uni, he says a number of things are being cancelled and he’s expecting closures next week.
