Families leaving Madrid and heading for the coast are spreading the virus throughout the country. A week ago the province of Murcia was only getting its first case of coronavirus.

I know people with holiday homes who plan on using them if schools close, I don’t blame them tbh, I don’t think moving around is going to to make things much worse as the virus is so wide spread anyway, if people have holiday homes, motor homes or caravans they are likely to use them if they are unable to work. The virus is pretty much everywhere.

Dd is studying for exams so if schools close that will continue, we are lucky that we live in a remote area so will still be able to get out and enjoy the countryside without bumping into to many people, we will avoid busy places (supermarkets, shops, pubs etc...) but I don’t think we should be stopped from moving around.

We decided not to travel to Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 for an Aunts funeral today. I’m 63 DH 68 and dealing with Service stations/hotels/eateries was not an option. One of DHs brothers has cancer and now palliative care, so another can of worms 🐛.

wantsomeanswers · 13/03/2020 15:47

Yes , my daughter said at her last lecture there was around 200 students in attendance with lots of coughing and sniffles in there

Brefugee · 13/03/2020 15:49

The schools where i live have been closed for 3 weeks already and today it was announced they will be closed until after the easter holidays. (we are in a hot-spot in Germany, though, for the virus)

It's a PITA if you have school aged children, but what can you do?

His view was, if you close the schools, be prepared for all of the nurses with children to take off work.

Sigh. Because their partner can't take time off (yes, i know a lot of HCP are married to other HCP but in that case someone needs to decide who is going to work and who not).

Michelleoftheresistance · 13/03/2020 15:50

The govt don't whine about 'we can't collect taxes, people won't want to pay them' or 'we can't have speed limits, people will want to drive at their own speed'. I've got no patience for this.

Get a grip, go on tv and tell people, clearly, don't travel or go on holiday. Make adverts about it, this could be knocked up in a few hours and air the advert a LOT. Put it on the radio. Put it on the motorway signs. Get well known British people the public actually like to say it on tv and radio. Text it to everyone. Make it very clear that it's socially wrong, dangerous, selfish, irresponsible. Actually bother to interact with the British public and make a bloody effort instead of doing fuck all because it's too haaaaaard. My bloody hamster has more oomph and initiative than this bunch.

alloutoffucks · 13/03/2020 15:51

It is an excuse. They don't want to do anything. It is deliberate policy. They are just trying to justify it.

RainbowPenguins · 13/03/2020 15:53

And what about single parents Brefugee? Even though 1 in 4 families is a single parent everyone seems to forget about them! Usually have less options for childcare at the best of times and no second income to fall back on.

Michelleoftheresistance · 13/03/2020 15:53

And if schools and nurseries close it would not be beyond the bounds of possibility or initiative to find staff without kids or without someone vulnerable in the household who would like the income of continuing to work - and many nursery staff are young and in the healthy category - who could run creches for nhs and emergency worker's children. Small group, less risk. And many of those staff will know the local kids and be used to running out of school groups on a day to day basis.

Caspianberg · 13/03/2020 15:56

Here childcare will be arranged for essential workers.
I'm not sure what exactly, but most people have either 2 parents who aren't both essential workers so the one who isn't will stay home. So childcare will only be needed for either single parents who are also essential workers, or households where both parents are essential and no other family to provide care. So the numbers in childcare will really reduce.

From friends I can think of, I would say only 3 out of around 100 will be classified as essential (all medical background), and none of them would need childcare as 2 have a partner in non-essential job, and third lives with her parents who will cover.

alloutoffucks · 13/03/2020 15:57

You can put things in place for essential workers, people who can't work at home. But no - its all tooo hard.

I would get sacked if I behaved like that in my job.

winniesanderson · 13/03/2020 15:57

@Bumfuzzled I'm also in Cornwall and very worried about all the Easter tourism and second home owners rushing down en mass. I'm not normally against the tourism. We rely on it so much economically and I'm glad people want to visit this part of the world. It benefits us in so many ways. But as you say it leaves us open to an explosion in cases which we aren't seeing at the moment and our health care services struggle at the best of times. I hope people just stay put to be honest. Selfish though that makes me.

user1484 · 13/03/2020 16:00

People from Madrid have started arriving in Cantabria over the past two days, where many have summer homes, have emptied supermarkets and gone to the council asking what activities they have for their kids.

I guess we all have our stories....

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 13/03/2020 16:00

All schools are closed in Ireland and nobody is going away on mini breaks!! We are on loose lockdown and all students have school work to do remotely each day. If people are properly informed of the dangers ahead then most won't take stupid selfish risks.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand why Boris Johnson is more influenced by the few British experts who advise not to close schools than all the experts in multiple European countries who advise to close them all.

Brefugee · 13/03/2020 16:00

and what about single parents Brefugee?

In that case then they're either going to have to make arrangements or not work. TBH I'm sick of saying this but i said at the time of the SARS outbreak that if each country doesn't make a plan for something like this, when it hits it will be too late. And now it's too late.

so we'll muddle through until the next one. We need to learn from this, what we needed because of the measures we took, and make a plan. Like the one in France where the local municipalities (as i understand it) are providing childcare support to key workers. That is the kind of thing we need.

YeahLikeNoThough · 13/03/2020 16:00

On the upside ... along with the closure of all Swiss schools, the closure of all ski resorts was announced as well.

Best case scenario: lessons are being learned ...

Yes, I'm an optimist.

Saz12 · 13/03/2020 16:01

But having “hotspots” might be worst outcome as medical services in those areas will be overwhelmed quickly.
Spread the same number over the whole country means fewer cases in each hospital (even though same number of cases overall.

liberoncolours · 13/03/2020 16:04

@CroissantsAtDawn yes but isn't organised childcare the same thing as schools and nurseries? A lot of children together?

alloutoffucks · 13/03/2020 16:05

Hotspots are easier to contain than a country wide spread.
Other countries are trying to eradicate this virus. We are trying to let most people get it and shrugging when people die.

alloutoffucks · 13/03/2020 16:06

Organised childcare can be done for children of essential workers with no other carer to take care of them. That will be significantly less children in childcare than in schools.

MarshaBradyo · 13/03/2020 16:06

The trouble is when people spread out it’s just a new hot spot, sometimes in places less able to cope like southern Italy

user1484 · 13/03/2020 16:06

@Saz12

But it’s not the same number of cases overall, they will be infecting new people in the area they go to.

Reginabambina · 13/03/2020 16:09

This video has been shared on another thread which briefly states the position on closing schools in a very matter of fact way www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/3846876-Coronavirus-and-herd-immunity-Best-interview-Ive-seen

alloutoffucks · 13/03/2020 16:10

If we did not want people spreading out we would have banned Cheltenham and other events. Lets not pretend the Government cares about that.

overnightangel · 13/03/2020 16:10

“Never, I have been so glad not to live in a democracy...“

FFS 🙄What a moronic statement, presumably you’re one of the privileged few @ShanghaiDiva

alloutoffucks · 13/03/2020 16:11

Seriously Cheltenham, football match with Italy, Crufts. All seem designed to spread this virus to more people, and for them to take it back to different areas of the country.
