Do you have an overseas holiday booked for Easter

Do you have a holiday booked for the Easter break and, if so, where to and are you still planning to go!

OP posts:
FixItUpChappie · 15/03/2020 16:01

The way it's going we may well all be safer in other countries than the UK!

But all this travel will just contribute to the spread to those places you visit Confused - especially concerning when people are visiting countries with weaker medical systems.

We were going to Disney California in May. We've cancelled.

Janleverton · 15/03/2020 16:18

We’ve been offered potential - on a case by case basis - to rearrange for trip in next year. But we simply can’t go in next year at any other time (exams, family commitments, leave, D.C. with different term dates, school trips).

I am gutted not to go. I’m certain we won’t go, but would obviously like the decision taken out of our hands by travel ban at either end so we can claim costs back. We’ve saved for years, planned as big pre-adult holiday for older dc, and will lose about £12k. I know it’s only money, but it represents a lot to us.

Janleverton · 15/03/2020 16:19

And if elderly placed into isolation ( happen to think is a good plan) DM and MIL will need support and us not away for a fortnight. That’s not covered by insurance though.

blossombabies · 15/03/2020 16:24

canaries end of may bit im waiting for ryanair to stop flights so i can claim it on my insurance hopefully or change dates for later in the year at least!

Margo34 · 15/03/2020 16:25

We're supposed to be going to Russia. Spent a couple of grand on it, will only get costs back via insurance if FCO recommends not to travel. However if Russia decide to close to foreigners and not the FCO, I understand that isn't covered. But then, if we do get over and then Russia closes down and we get stuck there, well then that wouldn't be great either! Just playing a waiting game now to sit out as long as possible and see what happens. We can't postpone without reapplying for another visa as it is I ly valid the dates you are booked to visit, so we'll have lost almost £300 on that alone. 😭

It was our last big trip pre-baby, we love to travel. 😕

Thisisworsethananticpated · 15/03/2020 16:55

I have come through the grieving process for the easter break as had all the stress 3 weeks ago !

I think it’s an interesting decision business face and regulators face

(A) Have millions of pissed off people a few hundred to a few thousand out of
Pocket

OR

(B) Have them reimbursed and have a few insurers and a few airlines go bust

I think I know what the best decision for the economy is

mothtoaflame · 15/03/2020 17:25

We are due to go to Mexico during the Easter break but I think it's highly likely that a travel ban will be imposed.

Unless you are self isolating not travelling isn't going to decrease the risk of you passing the virus on to others.

For all those saying travelling is the wrong thing to do, surely the governments should be acting in the best interests of their inhabitants and imposing foreign travel restrictions rather than relying on peoples moral compasses. People will be reimbursed if travel bans are imposed and if not, many can't afford not to go.

FixItUpChappie · 15/03/2020 19:03

My understanding is that info points to asymptomatic people doing a lot of the spread though - look at the poster below who is in Stockholm - arrived feeling fine yesterday with symptoms today.

Grufallosfriends · 16/03/2020 06:50

People will be reimbursed if travel bans are imposed and if not, many can't afford not to go.

Of course they can afford not to go. They obviously had enough money to book a holiday. This money has been spent and is a sunk cost and therefore it shounot affect their decision whether to go abroad or not in these uncertain times.

bengalcat · 16/03/2020 11:08

Was going skiing in the French Alps this coming Saturday . No point going now as pistes closed and no doubt shops/restaurants etc . Will reschedule / claim back on flight , accommodation , airport transfers etc insofar as I can either from the relevant companies or insurance . Otherwise what's lost is lost . Hopefully go next year .
Have a riding holiday in Iceland booked for the summer - just a waiting game really . Anticipating peak of corona and who knows what the fallout will be be May / June so Iceland may well be stuffed too . Never mind what will be will be .

mothtoaflame · 16/03/2020 11:12

But the authorities are saying that limiting travel is ineffective in reducing the spread. If governments consent to international travel why would people not go? Surely if it was high risk the FCO would impose an international travel ban.

bengalcat · 16/03/2020 12:14

If the pistes were open we would've gone .

If the tour company doesn't pull out of Iceland then we will be going .

mothtoaflame · 16/03/2020 13:19

Also just to clarify if a travel restriction is imposed it's the tour operators that refund any payments. Insurers won't cover cancellation as a result of government policy but they will cover medical expenses and repatriation (depending on your policy).

Orange89 · 16/03/2020 20:15

If They are advising against all but essential travel would we get our money back for our holiday to Thailand? My insurance said if the foreign office say you can’t go it would pay out so I’m hoping this is still covered (was due to go to Thailand 14th April)

mothtoaflame · 17/03/2020 07:00

@Orange89 at the moment no. Despite Cobras reference to only essential travel, companies are still flying to Thailand and Mexico this week as they (and other destinations) have not had official FCO travel restrictions imposed. Also many travel bans are only in place for the next 2 weeks so Easter holidays are unaffected. It's watch and wait really. Most people want to stay put now and just be refunded.

QueenofmyPrinces · 17/03/2020 09:32

We were contacted by Easy Jet yesterday to say they have cancelled our flight out to Bodrum (Turkey) in three weeks time and we’ve had a full refund.

At least that’s something I guess.

BG2015 · 17/03/2020 09:45

We're still waiting for our Mexico holiday to be cancelled, due to fly 4/4

My DP has had a cough since Friday and I'm now self isolating. I really don't want to go and we're set to lose over £3k. Contacting our travel insurance to see what happens if we try to get doctors notes.

I think Mexico are fudging their figures and are in total denial. A flight from Manchester went out his morning.

mothtoaflame · 17/03/2020 09:59

BG2015 keep us posted as I hadn't considered doctors notes. Our insurance doesn't cover government policy but Tui have advised they will substitute or refund. I think it's madness that the airlines are still flying passengers given the new guidance on non essential travel. A friend went to France on a Saturday (as allowed) now they are in quarantine and struggling to get home.

MoltonSilver · 17/03/2020 10:02

The reality is that no one is going anywhere for Easter.Gin

happilybemused · 17/03/2020 13:02

Just been cancelled this morning. Due to leave on the 29th Match.

Minesabecks · 17/03/2020 13:47

If we are not allowed to travel anywhere (all but essential international travel advised against by foreign office) will flights now be cancelled?
EasyJet has not put anything new up about my flight, just wondering

DorsetCamping · 17/03/2020 14:01

My understanding @Minesabecks is that if the FCO now advise against all international travel then refunds will be instigated

Minesabecks · 17/03/2020 14:04

That's great thanks Dorset (well you know what I mean, one less thing to worry about)

FuckKnowsMate · 17/03/2020 21:50

We have just had our holiday cancelled by TUI. Was due to go Mexico in Easter holidays. They have offered to change dates if we wish. Just glad the decision has been taken out of our hands and can forget about it now. Gutted but not surprised.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 17/03/2020 22:14

Just got our text re TUI cancellation too. They are also wanting to offer a change of dates, but I don't see a time when things will have settled down enough to be sure to book for yet. Esp as I'm a teacher and stuck with the school hols.
