Do you have an overseas holiday booked for Easter

Do you have a holiday booked for the Easter break and, if so, where to and are you still planning to go!

OP posts:
QueenofmyPrinces · 13/03/2020 20:02

For those who are still planning on going, are you not worried about getting ill whilst abroad? And dealing with foreign hospitals? I still don’t think people understand how nasty the virus can be

This was one of the biggest deciding factors when we made our decision to not go on our holiday.

DorsetCamping · 13/03/2020 20:32

@QueenofmyPrinces flying from Gatwick?

ihatethecold · 13/03/2020 20:43

ive just cancelled Porto for 3 weeks time. ive lost money but such is life. I feel relieved actually

whattodo2019 · 13/03/2020 21:17

All cruises should be cancelled, I can't believe anyone would be mad enough to go on one despite the screening as you board. Fellow passengers might be in the incubation period.
Non essential foreign travel should be stopped.

LamingtonBear · 13/03/2020 21:20

I don't agree about 'losing' money. The money is spent, on what would essentially be an experience.

I have a holiday booked, and it's unlikely we will be going. We could afford the holiday and although it's sad, it's just the situation.

Orange89 · 13/03/2020 21:58

I’m worried about going to Thailand next month, going with fellow passengers and feel obliged for me and partner to go as they are not concerned about virus and think it’s worse here. I’m still worried about the travelling and the chance of being ill as people have mentioned it would not be a good situation! The worst part is we’re going with our 2yr old and the stress of trying to keep him from touching things then rubbing his face is unbearable. We could leave him with the man which has been discussed but I would miss him terribly especially if we have to quarantine for two weeks after (going for three weeks). Some people make me think I’m overreacting but media and people on here seem concerned. I just hope the foreign office bans travel by then !

Orange89 · 13/03/2020 22:04

Leave him with his nan*

I’m wondering if other people go in this situation? We would only lose the flights but they were still a £1000 which is still a fair bit of money for us to lose on a holiday we would otherwise be excited about

mummumlife · 13/03/2020 22:37

Deposit paid to Tenerife end of June for 10 days. Will be cancelling holiday as we have a newborn who will be 7 months old at time of holiday. Just can't take the risk.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 13/03/2020 22:48

We were meant to be going to visit an old family friend in Singapore for the Easter holidays. Very unlikely we are going. I doubt Singapore will let us in and flight also likely to be cancelled. Tbh I hope it is cancelled as Singapore Airlines would let us rebook for next Easter

Minesabecks · 14/03/2020 00:09

I would not want to leave my two year old with his nan, definitely not. What if she gets sick, or your son does? Or you two do in Thailand? I would explore other options than losing the money though, which airline is it with as they may let you rebook

Ahardknocklife · 14/03/2020 08:52

We're due to get married in vegas in 2.5 weeks, due to fly in 2 weeks.

If the governments maintain current stance on travel between UK and USA we fully intend to go.

Both soon to be DH and I work from home, we have stopped socialising etc to ensure we are fit to travel and low risk of contracting virus or becoming a carrier, leave house to walk dog and that's usually at unsociable hours. So pretty much chosen to self isolate for our own protection.

we will now take laptops and work phones to ensure we can continue working, should we be unable to return home for any travel restrictive reason.

If travel restrictions are put in place then yes we will be saddened, we'd lose a lot of non refundable money and not to forget that we're excited about our day but.... we will not be too disheartened. We have both spent years working in italy and the devastation the virus is causing with our friends and ex colleagues is really putting some perspective on this!

user5656 · 14/03/2020 09:20

We were supposed to be in Spain this weekend. Probably won't get our money back, I'm trying to console myself by thinking of the money we are saving on restaurants and tourist attractions.

LightDrizzle · 14/03/2020 09:22

Florida for daughter’s 21st birthday present. I’m assuming it will be cancelled and we will do it at a later date.

Casino218 · 14/03/2020 09:24

Morocco put us through a body heat scanner. Be prepared for that!

whiteroseredrose · 14/03/2020 09:31

Not sure if my link will work but Iceland seems to be saying that it is still open for business online.

www.ferdamalastofa.is/static/files/ferdamalastofa/covid-19/important-information-for-tourists-in-iceland-about-covid-19.pdf

That was a couple of days ago though. Things may change.

Branleuse · 14/03/2020 09:33

Looks like where we were going in spain is on lockdown now anyway and flights are allowed to be changed for free so will likely postpone

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 14/03/2020 09:40

Getting increasingly hacked off at the obstinate, pig-headed selfish “im going” lot. You will be responsible for deaths theres no sugar coating it. I hope your few days in the sun is worth having that on your conscience for life.

Heres the stats on your chance of catching covid19 over the coming months (without containment measures).

Do you have an overseas holiday booked for Easter
Fleamaker123 · 14/03/2020 09:47

@YouAreTheEggMan
That's terrifying Shock
I won't be travelling anywhere, what if you fall ill abroad and can't get back??
What if you pass it on to vulnerable family and friends??
It's just a holiday!!

AnnaFiveTowns · 14/03/2020 09:51

To all the posters saying "it's worse here than it is there so I'm still going"; do you not stop to think then that maybe it's not a good idea for you to go spreading your germs in their country? The selfish mindset of some people is shocking. It's not just about the impact it will have on you as an individual; it's about the what's best for everyone. And it's clearly better if we all stop travelling about unnecessarily.

DuchessMinnie · 14/03/2020 09:54

Reunion island in early April, part of France and free from covid19 at the moment. I am gutted but I don't see how we can go. We can cancel our flights with Air France and rebook for later dates but the trip was to see family who won't be there after the summer. It's not worth the risk of spreading the virus or not being able to get home again. Plus I have had my leave cancelled at work anyway so there's zero chance I will be going anywhere!

mintandcoral · 14/03/2020 10:08

We're cancelling our wedding at the start of April. It was halfway across the country and the lives of our elderly relatives outweigh any of our sadness at having to cancel.

I'm absolutely horrified people are still considering flying abroad. Selfish people who will only help to spread the virus to our most vulnerable, including my mum who has an auto immune disorder and COPD.

PuffinShop · 14/03/2020 11:51

To all the posters saying "it's worse here than it is there so I'm still going"; do you not stop to think then that maybe it's not a good idea for you to go spreading your germs in their country?

Exactly!! We don't want more cases. If you're in an affected country stay in it. We were going to go to Norway but not anymore because we don't want to catch it there AND we don't want to cause any more infections in their country. How would you in the UK feel about tourists coming from Italy or Spain right now?

Not sure if my link will work but Iceland seems to be saying that it is still open for business online.

No, it hasn't been banned. In terms of identified cases we are the worst affected country per capita in the world, though. Thankfully no deaths yet. Daily life will be severely affected as of Monday when the government is banning public gatherings and we should all be 2 metres apart from each other in public. Of course I don't speak for the entire country but I know I'm not alone when I say please don't come here from the UK. We are a small nation, our health service is good but stretched, we are trying to get a hold of this and more people coming in from other affected countries is the last thing we need. This is not the time. Come another time.

avocadotofu · 14/03/2020 12:23

I'm American and we were supposed to go home and see my family. We are now going to cancel because we feel we just can't take the risk.

buttermilkwaffles · 14/03/2020 12:50

Ghana, South Africa... seriously? Very selfish to go on a holiday somewhere like that from a country with a high number of cases (the UK).

Average time from infection to showing symptoms is around 5 days, but can be 14 or longer in a small minority of cases. So even if you feel fine on departure you could be bringing the virus to a country whose healthcare system will be unable to cope with a significant outbreak. Where it could spread uncontrollably amongst poor communities who live in crowded conditions. You could pass it on to cleaners, hotel workers, taxi drivers etc who live in these communities and be the cause of deaths. All because your holiday was more important than anything or anybody else.

Poppydaisies · 14/03/2020 12:56

Exactly. Hopefully these countries will soon be closing their borders to us and other Europeans !
