Do you have an overseas holiday booked for Easter

Do you have a holiday booked for the Easter break and, if so, where to and are you still planning to go!

Unless there is official advice not to travel, flights are cancelled or travel banned, you can't claim on insurance and people will still go, because they don't want to lose money.

frillyfarmer · 13/03/2020 03:51

I do find the attitude of "nothings stopping me" with regards to international travel in the face of a pandemic utterly terrifying - it's just selfishness on another level. And considering the risk is for a holiday, it just seems to be Darwinism at its finest?

I have a 5 day old baby so I will admit to being slightly more neurotic on disease control than your average healthy 30 year old right now, but we all have a moral and social responsibility in this.

Our local school has just returned from Italy - they flew out there the day before new sanctions were imposed. The local parents interviewed justified the trip on local media interviews by stating they "didn't want to lose money". Again I just find this Darwinism attitude so terrifying - are people really stupid enough to send their children to a high risk country just so they don't feel bad losing £300 on a school trip?!

My parents are adamant they're going to the canaries in three weeks time because they've paid for it. They're in their late 50s with no health concerns but they're both socially active people who should no better than to spread a potential virus like this because they want a bit of sunshine. I've told them if they go they can self isolate when they get back so will have a grand total of a month away from their grandchildren - they're sulking about that because I'm the unreasonable one apparently.

committing to social distancing as a country is one thing, but limiting non essential travel just seems to be common sense to me.

We have elderly parents visiting us in NZ. They are due to fly home to UK via Dubai next week. Father has a lung condition. They are pretty safe here in NZ given we've had 4 instances and no new ones for 6 days.

I'm torn. Do we send them home as planned with the health risk that the flight carries or keep them here with the risk that Dubai or UK go into lockdown? WWYD?

Casino218 · 13/03/2020 04:37

I'm in Morocco right now. They have minimal cases. Big thermo body scanners at airport. I don't feel so at risk here but travel through airports is another matter.

Maighdeann · 13/03/2020 05:31

@nakedavengeragain Can they stay for a while? Does your father have meds he will need refilled? Is that possible to do in NZ? Can they extend their insurance? Dubai schools have been on lockdown for a week and they seem to be taking it seriously. However, I'd been tempted to keep them close in a low risk environment rather than send them back to a UK that seems to be mishandling the situation.

MyPartInHistory · 13/03/2020 05:49

I’m wondering who people think will be flying the planes, checking them in, running the hotels etc. Human beings - all of whom may fall victim to Covid19.

This is going to hit pretty much everywhere like a sledgehammer. In two weeks things are going to look very different to what they look like today. Anyone getting on a plane now should be sure they are happy (and rich enough) to stay where they are going for longer than they anticipated! And, possibly, to be at the end if the queue for medical intervention should the worst happen.

middleager · 13/03/2020 06:12

I agree with MyPart and Frilly travelling right now is irresponsible.

A poster asked if we think this will be over in four weeks? Of course it won't. It'll be worse.

Many countries will not welcome us in anyway.

habibihabibi · 13/03/2020 06:22

Italian ski holiday - flights refunded but still waiting on Club Med to reply on resort refund.

Piccalino3 · 13/03/2020 06:38

California at Easter. We won't be going. Flights can be rearranged I think but only once and not sure how far in advance. There is no way I would want to be travelling anywhere right now. I would anticipate not getting a warm welcome from the locals on arrival as well as having the constant worry of getting sick, assessing symptoms, watching the news to see if a lockdown where I was or at home was happening. We are in a global pandemic, I would be very upset to lose thousands and thousands of pounds and feel especially sorry for anyone who has saved up for a dream holiday but it is selfish to travel right now.

I hope that the choice is taken out of our hands and all but non essential travel banned before Easter.

Andonandonan · 13/03/2020 06:39

Switzerland at Easter but I think it’s pretty unlikely we’ll actually be going. However we’re just going to wait & see as cancelling now achieves nothing.

I also think people are unfair calling others selfish for still planning on travelling when they’re only following government advice. No one here is saying they’re going even if travel is advised against. But currently people are in really difficult situations unable to get refunds.

FeltCarrot · 13/03/2020 06:46

Due to go to South Africa in 3 weeks. Flying via Dubai. We have very comprehensive travel insurance so just waiting to see how things pan out over the next few weeks.

Seventyone72seventy3 · 13/03/2020 06:50

We were planning on France but can't get out of Italy so no. Luckily we always book last minute - for once it's paid off!

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 13/03/2020 06:50

I'm going cycling in Scotland with a friend. Still going as we are driving up, it's not that far and if our accommodation is cancelled for whatever reason we will just camp.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 13/03/2020 15:25

We are torn today. Not worried about catching Covid-19 but worried about getting back from an island destination should the UK close the airports. Anyone else in same situation and undecided. ?

HoldMyLobster · 13/03/2020 16:56

Disney is closed until the end of March only. It’ll be open at Easter.

DH's company owns hotels in Orlando. They're not assuming it'll be open at Easter - in fact they're planning quite actively for the likelihood of it being closed.

Tatum1234 · 13/03/2020 17:04

We were supposed to be going Orlando at the beginning of April but have changed it today for free to the end of May. Couldn’t go any later this year so thought we might as well take a chance.

BackInTime · 13/03/2020 17:10

While I get the financial loss is hard to swallow I think people will have to look at the bigger picture here. This is an extraordinary situation constantly changing no one knows what things will be like at their destination or here in a few weeks. It is seriously not worth the risks either to yourself or others to travel.

middleager · 13/03/2020 17:14

It's not just about you getting it. If you're not worried, fine, but think of the impact on others.

Grufallosfriends · 13/03/2020 17:18

I'd rather lose the money !!

lazylinguist · 13/03/2020 17:19

A week in Spain booked for the Easter holidays. We were dithering but have now definitely decided not to go.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 13/03/2020 17:20

Booked and paid for Portugal 22nd - 29th April - won't be going - the risk of getting stuck in isolation in another country isn't worth it IMO

ifonly4 · 13/03/2020 17:21

Greece are closing restaurants, pubs and takeaways. We were going to sit on the fence re our decision until the week before, but guess that's our decision made for us - we were looking forward to our first holiday in years just the two of us sampling the tavernas in the evening.

PuffinShop · 13/03/2020 17:21

Iceland has an assembly ban in effect for 4 weeks as of Monday. I really wish you wouldn't come on holiday here even if the Foreign Office doesn't care enough to tell you not to. Please.

TheElementsOfMedical · 13/03/2020 17:27

We're booked to go to the Netherlands. To see the fucking tulips. Unless there's FCO advice not to travel, we can't get it back on the insurance.

However, we've now had emails from the airline and one of the hotels that we can rebook with no change fee. (I'm going to contact the other accommodation to see if we can postpone.) If we can change our dates, I think we'll try postponing to October. So much for the fucking tulips.
