Hand sanitiser sold out everywhere

Bellini12 · 02/03/2020 12:26

I’m absolutely NOT in panic mode about the corona virus. However, I thought it may be sensible to get a couple of bottles of hand sanitiser for the kids to use at school and also for me as I have an Invisalign brace and do have to put my fingers in my mouth when out and about to remove it to eat when on the go if I don’t have access to wash facilities.
But it is sold out everywhere or charging crazy prices online. I suppose everyone else has had the same idea but I also expect there are a few panic buyers out there.
Do you think this will all calm down soon?

Thats difficult when you have to put glasses off and on or have a hair caught in your glasses tickling you!😁
I can go 3.5 -4 hrs between a chance to wash my hands. If you saw what people did at checkouts you wouldnt want to wait that long either!

MarshaBradyo · 03/03/2020 21:05

You have to concentrate on it not to touch your face, we do it absentmindedly so many times.

I thought about it on the bus to try not to

ComeTheFuck0nBridget · 03/03/2020 21:06

I asked in my local Poundland today, they said they had a delivery of it on Saturday and it all sold out the same day.

Mrsfussypants1 · 03/03/2020 21:12

Nomorewineever good point, I never checked it out properly.

KittenVsBox · 03/03/2020 21:15

@Nomorewineever
Check my logic - I've had far too much wine...
But, if you add 25ml of IPA (assuming 100% - it's probably more like 99%) to 100ml of 50%, you should have 75/125 alcohol, which is 60%.
So if you put just over 25ml of IPA into every 100ml if gel, you should be there.

awishes · 03/03/2020 21:17

@coconuttelegraph - exactly what I was thinking.

Opendraw · 03/03/2020 22:34

I agree totally selfish buying. My mum can’t drive and used public transport and I can’t get any for her. Was at a Meeting and it was a bit of a joke all the panic buying one woman gleefully told me her husband had bought the last lot and she had 2 in her bag. I was actually a bit bloody cross.

Opendraw · 03/03/2020 22:35

I bet some people are bulk buying to sell on bloody eBay !!

Nomorewineever · 03/03/2020 22:38

@KittenVsBox noted thank you. I’ll carry out that suggestion tomorrow.

Some larger scale hygiene companies are saying gel will be ‘stock back mid March’ so contemplating an order of a big tub now just so some is on the way. I don’t want to wait for the little pocket ones to replenish as my own feeling is demand will outstrip supply and manufacture for weeks and weeks.

manicinsomniac · 04/03/2020 00:35

I found a bottle lying in the corridor at school yesterday (I'm a teacher). It was named (!) so I returned it to the 8 year old who'd lost it but I was childishly tempted to employ the 'finders keepers, losers weepers' policy for a second. Grin

We have a couple of tiny ones left over from holiday in the summer. I would like more but I'm not desperate. I'm usually close enough to a sink to be able to wash my hands.

VanGoghsDog · 04/03/2020 00:50

People are told by the government to wash their hands more and use hand sanitizer if they can't.

People buy hand sanitizer and soap. Shops get low on stock. People complain that Other People are buying the things they want to buy.

It's just the increased purchasing that's the problem. It's not panic buying, it's just buying which we have been told to do. Shops work on a 'just in time' stock basis so if demand increases there are bound to be issues.

Boots in central London seem to have them but no idea if any limits as I've not tried to buy them. I just go in every day to buy Covonia cough sweets for my cough.....

Lycidas · 04/03/2020 00:54

Time to stock up on strepsils before they disappear too..:

chardonm · 04/03/2020 02:53

The people bulk buying and buying more than they need have not thought this through. It's really in their interest that other people also have access to hand sanitiser. It only works if everyone can wash their hands...

VanGoghsDog · 04/03/2020 07:05

I honestly don't think many people are bulk buying, it's just a surpply chain issue.

Lordfrontpaw · 04/03/2020 07:49

I have some in the bathroom that was made in China, so I guess those supplies are getting backed up.

mountainofdreams · 04/03/2020 09:47

I bought some this morning and it was limited to two per customer. It's the first time I've seen it in stock in about a week (outer London). A friend of mine knows someone who bought four hundred bottles at a grossly inflated price and then realised she had bought the alcohol free version!

SouthWestmom · 04/03/2020 09:51

None online unless you want to be huge prices for a tiny bottle. Found a large bottle in the house so am going to decant into little bottles for the kids.

Bellini12 · 04/03/2020 09:55

Went into town early this morning to get my shopping and there is none anywhere still. Lady in Superdrug told me that they had a delivery last Friday morning and people were queuing outside the shop And they went straight away! So unless I’m in the right place at the right time, I don’t think I will be in luck and I refuse to pay the inflated prices online.

Friend just told me Aldi (miles away) has some at two per customer only. That was earlier today.

middleager · 04/03/2020 10:18

None in Co-op today at 8.30am.
Good to hear some shops are rationing now though.

Nomorewineever · 04/03/2020 10:43

I have ‘topped’ my 50% up as per suggestion by @KittenVsBox (thank you) and other than going cloudy it’s the same consistency and feel.

However surgical spirit doesn’t half honk. Is it going to hurt if I put a couple of drops of lavender essential oil in? Otherwise I am going to smell like I started on the vodka at 7am!

Robuns · 04/03/2020 12:25

Local boots and co-op had some in today, said it was starting to reappear in deliveries. Boots have rationed to 2 per customer and had a good range in of own brand and branded, so hopefully this means other areas will see it back on the shelves soon!

Nicknacky · 04/03/2020 12:30

A case has just been confirmed in my area so I will have even less chance of finding any!

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 04/03/2020 12:35

Popped into 2 supermarkets this morning and happened to notice that both had sold out of handwash in pump dispensers - I guess because they're sold as antibacterial. Get a grip, people!

Robuns · 04/03/2020 12:38

Isn't it good people are buying handwash?
