I can't sleep after having an awful thought.
Given that this seems to spread in family clusters, and adults are worse affected, who would look after my children if DH and I were hospitalised? My eldest is theoretically an adult (18) but is autistic and very immature. Would the powers that be expect him to be in charge?

I am seriously terrified by this aspect of this disease.

VivaLeBeaver · 02/03/2020 06:17

I also think the thing about you won’t catch it unless you’ve been in contact with someone for 15 mins is rubbish as well. We’re been told that as false reassurance. If it was true why are schools, etc getting deep cleaned? Totally agree if someone with it sneezes/coughs on you you will most likely be infected....takes seconds!

ImRealHonest · 02/03/2020 06:27

I’m starting to become paranoid.

I overseas. A major sporting event was cancelled at weekend because two of the support team (Italians, by the way) tested positive. Two hotels on lockdown, one of which id spent a lot of time in last week.

Now a family in my apartment block are in hospital quarantine, results expected last night (not heard an update), work have suspended the fingerprint clocking in and have installed sanitizer everywhere.

STBXH is coughing all over the place, even the dog has a cough (this bastard virus best not take out my doggy 😡) and I’m getting a temperature. STBXH has a habit of catching everything even if he’s been vaccinated, so if anyone will get it, it’s him.

When I’m feeling more logical, I know my temperature is because I badly sunburnt my neck at weekend, He’s coughing because he smokes too much, and the doggy is old.

Not particularly worried we’ll die if we do get it (apart from the dog), because we’re young and fairly healthy. Just about the inconvenience and the feeling shit for a while.

Morning all

Alib838 · 02/03/2020 06:43

Since last Wednesday evening I've had some sort of mild chest infection, cough and sore throat. Evenings are mostly worse. Little coughing during daytime. I cancelled on my nurse friend yesterday morning who was coming over and as a precaution, as more than likely seasonal virus, but checked with 111 on what I should be doing/not doing. Advice is that because I don't know anyone with Coronavirus, nor have travelled abroad recently to go on as normal. Interestingly I started taking Oregano Oil a couple of nights ago (2-3 drops under the tongue if you can bear) and very quickly felt relief if that tip helps anyone worried.

motherrunner · 02/03/2020 06:55

I have become more anxious over the last few weeks. DH and I are teachers. The measures so far for ‘containment’ are placing posters around the school reminding of the need for good hygiene and a letter sent home trying to waylay fears over students who had visited Italy over half term. As I have to remind our cleaner to replenish the toilet roll and soap on a near enough daily basis I do worry about hygiene protocols!

SansaSnark · 02/03/2020 06:58

I think the 15 minutes thing is possibly based on how they determine "exposure" for flu, rather than any scientific basis for this virus. In my opinion, it is really far too early to draw firm conclusions like that.

We know this virus appears to be more contagious than flu, and we know asymptomatic people can pass it on (although maybe not as much as symptomatic people). We also know that some people can have it very mildly but if they are coughing they are probably more likely to pass it on.

I do think unless you have had direct contact with a case or travel to an affected area, your current chance of being affected is very low still in the UK.

WaterSheep · 02/03/2020 07:01

All that's happened round here is posters about if you have these symptoms, and have visited XYZ call 111. As well as reminding students about properly washing their hands.

Nothing else. I'm not filled with confidence, and expect it to spread through more schools in the coming days.

Newjez · 02/03/2020 07:04

When my ds describes the state of his school toilets, I'm amazed any of them survive until adulthood. Maybe some of the other germs in that disgusting mess will eat the CV19?

Newjez · 02/03/2020 07:10

If this was smallpox, or a Spanish flu, I imagine containment would involve vaccination of the surrounding ring. With no vaccine, I guess all they can do is isolate and investigate. I have to admit that I am amazed they have had so much success so far. I would say that this is down to press and sites like Mumsnet and NHS. Because there is a strong force telling us not to take this seriously. (Not sure if these are conflicting government arms).
My big worry is Indonesia, iran, Italy, Africa and the USA, as from press, they don't seem to be containing very successfully.

Icarriedawatermelon82 · 02/03/2020 07:16

What does everyone think will happen if it gets into a care home. I'm a CA, surely some staff in the would have to stay in the home with the residents? As wouldn't be able to commute to and from work. Also, you obviously cant close a care home down!!

StartupRepair · 02/03/2020 07:16

Indonesia seems to in a fair amount of denial.

SistemaAddict · 02/03/2020 07:16

I'm not feeling reassured about DC's residential trip tomorrow. The brexit box is coming in handy at the moment. I'm going to check for hand gel locally later. I'm worried.

ClashCityRocker · 02/03/2020 07:18

Is it the Cobra meeting with Boris Johnson today?

It will be interesting to see how many new cases. I was surprised by twelve yesterday.

SistemaAddict · 02/03/2020 07:18

And I seem to have a cough and woke up wet with sweat. Hormones and asthma I hope.

VowelMovement · 02/03/2020 07:18

The Chief Medical Officer today announced that 12 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in England. One of these is a clinician from Mount Vernon Cancer Centre.

middleager · 02/03/2020 07:19

Do we know what time the Cobra meeting might be today, based on previous times?

WaterSheep · 02/03/2020 07:20

It will be interesting to see how many new cases.

I suspect we'll be around the 55 mark when we get the 2pm update.

TheGlaikitRambler · 02/03/2020 07:21

I am also from Dundee, and I work with the general public. I am slightly concerned now that I will get it. My young adult daughter has an pre-existing condition that would make her very high risk :(

Wehttam · 02/03/2020 07:25

Morning all. Blue skies where I am at.

Is anyone else getting a bit tired of waking up all motivated and cheerful and then bam reality taps your shoulder as you’re making your first brew and you remember what’s happening. 😕

Let’s see what today brings. 🐍

NameChange1012 · 02/03/2020 07:25

I'm concerned that they aren't testing in hospitals unless you've actually been abroad.
I was in with pneumonia last week. I work with international students who are in and out of the country all the time. I told them this and they were not remotely bothered, didn't isolate me (packed ward) and didn't test.
I'm better, it clearly wasn't COVID, but I still hold that it easily could have been considering how much close contact I've had with overseas students, many from affected parts of Asia.

Springinsight · 02/03/2020 07:28

Alib I also have a tickly dry cough that seems to come on like clock work at night.

Same as you I've not knowingly been in contact etc. No temp.

NebbiaZanzare · 02/03/2020 07:34

Hairy

First case in Foggia.

Whack it through google translate, but if there is any part you need clarified cos a machine translation mangled it, let me know.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 07:35

Morning everyone. Let's see what today brings.
Anyone want to take a guess on how many UK cases we will get today?
I'm guessing 16 more, including one in my county which is Lancashire.
