One good trick with pasta is to chill for 24 hours then reheat it and eat it the next day, not the day you cook it - makes its GI and blood sugar spike much smaller.

And good luck (if that's appropriate) with your test @HopeIDont .

AbsentmindedWoman · 02/03/2020 01:56

First case here in NYC confirmed.

We just went grocery shopping - shelves looking a bit bare but it's Sunday. However I think the type of things that are selling out show people are taking this seriously now. Big packs of loo paper pretty much all gone. Not much rice. Still loads of fresh and tinned stuff overall though.

We got the last long life milk, had to settle for bloody fat free but it'll do in a pinch Brew

DressingGownofDoom · 02/03/2020 01:59

A second death has been reported in the USA.

Hollyhobbi · 02/03/2020 02:02

Currently in an A n E in Dublin. Waiting to see if my nose 'tampon' has worked or if I'll need my nose cauterised. Warfarin is a crappy drug! Anyway one of the nurses told me that there were no paperups anywhere in the hospital last week! What hope have we if Corona Virus spreads?? And the acute area I was admitted to first had us doubled up two to a cubicle! Where I am now there are patients on trollies lined up against the walls! I'm lucky in that I now have a cubicle to myself! Madness.

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 02:18

Best guesses that maybe 1500 people so far also infected where US hasn't been detecting cases.

Its something like 30m have no health insurance in the US because the US charge a fucking fortune for life saving medicines and treatments, making the great ol' U S of A a huge risk for this getting out of control.

Korea sounds overwhelmed with three having died queueing waiting for beds. This is a travesty.

Hollyhobbi · 02/03/2020 02:28

Back sharing a cubicle now! Woman with an awful cough on a nebuliser.

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 02:43

Holly. Poor woman. You are not at risk from her if shes coughing into a nebuliser. Try not to worry. Although I wouldn't want to be sharing a cubicle!

Keep your back turned.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 02/03/2020 02:47

@Hollyhobbi well that doesn’t sound like a fun time on many different levels. Here’s hoping they get you sorted and home soon!

Hollyhobbi · 02/03/2020 03:00

Unfortunately I'd be 99% sure she's a smoker judging by the cough, the wrinkles and the smell of smoke, so it's self inflicted and not Corona Virus! I definitely wouldn't like to be in the US though. Their health system is scary!

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 03:15

Self inflicted or not, shes struggling to breath if shes on a nebuliser. Poor woman.

I hope you are treated and free to go soon

Hollyhobbi · 02/03/2020 03:20

She's off the nebuliser now and well able to talk to her son do it did the job for her. Just back from a trip to the loo and there is no soap in the dispenser! Had to get soap in the men's loo next door!! For Pete's sake. I can't wait to go home and get some sleep.

NemophilistRebel · 02/03/2020 05:21

Checking in

wobblywindows · 02/03/2020 05:37

Influenza spreads by droplets of infected respiratory secretions which are produced when an infected person talks, coughs or sneezes.

This is from The UK Influenza Pandemic Preparedness Strategy 2011 which was mentioned on thread 8 >> assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/213717/dh_131040.pdf

So even if a person doesn't cough or sneeze, talking to you at close quarters is enough to infect. The article is written for influenza but I presume this detail applies to this virus too.

The devil is in the detail.

Anothernamechange2020 · 02/03/2020 06:02

@SirChing

No one is 'whining' about it. With all due respect, if you don't work in a school, you can't see the logistics. You can't just move a summer holiday, unless everyone is dying, at which point none of the school closure thing is relevant anyway!

MrsTidyHouse · 02/03/2020 06:13

On radio - over 60s advised to stay away from crowds. I was in a busy supermarket yesterday and a crowded hospital clinic last week. From now on I can stay in house and garden, and have my own car. So can avoid public transport. We have food, and my appt went well.

DGC live with me. One doesn’t mind washing when reminded, the other has SN and hygiene is poor, very resistant to any suggestion. I can keep them off school till we figure out what to do. I’m the only one awake, and don’t know how to deal with this. Most winters I get a heavy cold around this time of year, and it often goes into my chest.

Very frightened.
