There certainly have been deaths in the 10-19 age range, even if relatively few.

tryingtoprep · 02/03/2020 16:09

Newjez I'd add employers allow (and actively encourage) all those who can work from home to do so.

I'd also like better clarity from the media. Several headlines quoting WHO advice for higher risk categories avoiding crowds....but edited to suggest over 60s alone are higher risk. In fact the WHO included those of any age with prexisting conditions. Its dangerous as it could lull people into a false sense of security, not to mention make it harder for those at increased risk to persuade employees to allow WFH. It seems a bit pointless also people self isolating unless the whole household does?

Aren't we the fifth largest economy in the world? We should reinstate the crisis loans. An immediate emergency payout (no 5 week wait) for people on zero hours and/or with no sick pay for self isolation.

Agree the number of cases is likely way higher than officially confirmed. Delays to testing, people with symptoms not being tested unless known contacts, possible false negatives...

Someone just walked past my house and spat randomly on the pavement. Dirty little cretin.

Source?

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 16:12

@hoolydooly The link I posted before said 0.2% of those infected in that age range died.

Must be very tough for you.

Today has been a better outcome than we all feared both in the UK and wider.

Wonder if this is due to the weekend, or if containment is actually effective.

Surprised that Crufts is permitted to continue, I thought that banning all events with international attendees would be crucial in halting the spread.

I read an update on the Guardian (I think) which said a 3-yr old has been admitted to hospital with it. Not sure which country though. Possibly Italy.

kirinm · 02/03/2020 16:16

Ah, it was actually in Nice not Italy.

alwaysfiltered · 02/03/2020 16:17

@ajandjjmum what did that mean?

She had a valid point. What happens to SMEs when they just won't have the money? it's not their fault and business owners aren't automatically all rich!

(Unless that wasn't sarcastic and I read it wrong in what case sorry!)

WashingHandsBoris · 02/03/2020 16:20

I just have an awful feeling that tomorrow will be an even bigger increase in numbers

copperstrike76 · 02/03/2020 16:20

I've just spotted what I think is a very irresponsible headline in the Metro online "Coronavirus spreads among dogs as racing greyhounds catch disease".

But then you read on and the article says it's a known type of non-fatal illness not transferable to humans that has been around in Australia, where the affected greyhounds are, since the 1970s. Talk about irresponsible reporting. If it weren't for COVID-19 a story like that wouldn't even make the news.

I won't add a link!

ajandjjmum · 02/03/2020 16:20

I mean I am genuinely sorry for the situation they are in. My DH and I run our own business - as we're now winding down into retirement, it is just the two of us. However, we were talking earlier about how tricky it would have been when we had a number of employees - you want to do your best, but you still have to be aware of the overall picture.

As far away from sarcastic as possible! Smile

Namethecat · 02/03/2020 16:21

We certainly won't be attending any events that expect large numbers in confined areas.
Yes we have bought a few extra items of food for the ' just in case ' scenarios .
I'm also washing hands more regularly as per instruction , avoiding using handrails , touching of face whilst out etc.
I don't think we need to avoid everyday life quite yet ,but it doesn't hurt to be a little more vigilant.

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 02/03/2020 16:22

ifonly4 I also work in a school, but all classrooms have been given tissues, the students all had an assembly about handwashing and hygiene and theres posters relating to coronovirus (how to wash hands and what symptoms to look out for etc) in all the loos. Have to say our SLT are on it.
Still, one of our teachers went to milan over half term, no symptoms, but another teacher in her department has complained of feeling "a little under the weather" over the weekend.... that is worrying but they wont get tested as they personally havent been abroad.

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 16:24

@AHippoNamedBooBooButt The problems is people feel a little under the weather all the time without it meaning anything.

hoolydooly · 02/03/2020 16:25

@alloutoffucks
You didn't link to a site as far as I saw. You just said "It was in one of those sites giving info about the Corona virus."
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

18 cases of #Coronavirus in #Netherlands now in total.

Redpenguin2020 · 02/03/2020 16:28

Less new cases on Sunday compared to Saturday and much less today so far.

Let’s hope Italy and France don’t report massive numbers later on today

FoxRedBitch · 02/03/2020 16:28

@fourducksate

I am in the same boat. But on a smaller scale. I only currently employ 1 member of staff but am taking 2 new members on from 23 March.

I'm bricking it!! I've no idea what to do. I suppose Personally I'm lucky as they only get statutory sick pay which I could probably afford if it came to it.

It's such a hard thing to think about.

It's a small business we would go bust and that would be the 4 of us out of jobs.

Just on the subject of working from home. The week before Christmas I had a horrible cough and cold. I asked if I could work from home as I didn't want to make every one ill right before Christmas. I was told that if I was well enough to work I had to go in and if I wasn't I had to take it as sick leave. I went in to work and, despite washing my hands regularly, every one in my team had a cough and cold over Christmas and New Year, some of whom took time off work because of it. My company supposedly supports agile working. I imagine their attitude would be the same even in light of coronavirus.
