I'm using Milton. So I smell like a swimming pool. Until my alcohol arrives...

Getting p'd off because several times now people I know have asked on FB etc for travel advice. I post a fairly straightforward response, in one case a mother of a child with no father intending to fly into northern Italy. I say honestly, I wouldn't. My child would have noone if anything happened to me. And if I got stuck there I don't trust I'd be OK or able to get out. I'd rather not risk it. Then 10 people jump on and accuse me of scare mongering or falling for media hype. I'm trying to help but clearly it's not welcome.

BrendasUmbrella · 02/03/2020 11:54

@IceWings "the worst coughing" sounds like the virus that has been going around for a couple of months. I had it before Christmas. Every time I tried to lie down and sleep I would get a coughing fit. Try not to worry, but keep an eye on your symptoms.

Spacecadetagain · 02/03/2020 11:55

Just been chatting to a friend who said it’s a fuss about nothing and no worse than a cold . Kill me now

Kokeshi123 · 02/03/2020 11:55

I think there needs to be a bit of a rethink regarding English schools' aggressive attitude about attendance. It's encouraging some behaviors that aren't helpful. Perhaps things will change after this virus.

TokyoSushi · 02/03/2020 11:56

I'm still holding out hope for Crufts on Saturday, however they've just put a statement on their Facebook page saying there will be another statement after the COBRA meeting.

So a statement, about a statement, if you will...

I think its looking increasingly unlikely.

Iusedtobeapartygirl · 02/03/2020 11:58

School attitude about attendance is due to being in trouble from Ofsted if absence rates are deemed too high.

I agree, it's ridiculous. And how is it the headteacher's fault if a child is ill!!?

MichaelMumsnet · 02/03/2020 11:58

Hi all, we have a new Coronavirus section.
We'll be moving a few topics into this area today.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 02/03/2020 11:59

@magicrainbowbeans theres a full thread on MN about people who are continuing with their travel plans regardless. Part of me feels as though they’re deluding themselves and this “it’ll never happen to me” “it’s all hype” mindset is a coping mechanism. Part of me thinks they could be right not to live in fear and good on them because they're way braver than me. Personally I’ve gone down a rabbit hole of facts and figures to stay as informed as possible and based on that, and being in a high risk group I won’t be travelling until this is properly contained or run its course.

Nicepud · 02/03/2020 12:01

SisterAgatha same here.

If they give us permission to keep dc out of school/learn at home, then we are ready to go.

Dh works from home, I am doing an open uni online degree and we still have a stash pantry from brexit (rotated of course)

SistemaAddict · 02/03/2020 12:02

@MichaelMumsnet yay! Thank you Smile

magicrainbowbeans · 02/03/2020 12:03

EggMan I hadn't spotted that thread. Not sure I want to read it, people sticking heads in sand liable to make me very cross.

I agree with your approach, be best informed. But with the figures currently available and a basic grasp of maths for projections, I won't be deliberately travelling.

DonkeyKong2019 · 02/03/2020 12:07

I can't see how crufts could go ahead

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 12:09

I bet now our thread is moved to the new coronavirus topic, we will get more "it's just flu" and "you are just hysterical" types ...

TokyoSushi · 02/03/2020 12:10

No me neither @DonkeyKong2019 thousands of people from all over the world in close proximity, its a perfect environment to spread the virus...

SisterAgatha · 02/03/2020 12:10

I see that Portugal now have 2 cases. At what point will WHO declare this a pandemic? I understand the reasons they haven’t yet but I think we have reached the criteria now, haven’t we?

persin · 02/03/2020 12:10

rethink regarding schools' aggressive attitude about attendance

Constantly ill children from age 4. It's unhygienic. We are treated like children by the state. Also work places. A lot of people actually don't like being with crowds of people 40 hours a week when there isn't a virus outbreak.

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 12:15

But colds are common place. Lots of people would be off work a lot or away from school if we were not supposed to go in with even minor illnesses.

DressingGownofDoom · 02/03/2020 12:17

My local Tesco was very low on soap, paracetamol, anti bac wipes, pasta and tinned stuff - beans etc this morning.

Skierrdery · 02/03/2020 12:18

Do we only learn how many new cases after the 2pm update?

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 12:19

Yes Ski only at 2pm now, unless the press get hold of a story

persin · 02/03/2020 12:19

that would be good. There is no reason someone can't also work at home, flexibly unless you are making coffees

persin · 02/03/2020 12:21

maybe a virus lab

TokyoSushi · 02/03/2020 12:23

Nicola Sturgeon on Sky News just now (it would seem almost that shes running the response to this rather than the PM?!)

Lots of focus on Containment, we're not at the major outbreak/shut schools/cancel events stage yet but seeing how it pans out...

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 12:23

Lots of people can't work at home. It is only office type jobs with laptops, phone calls and skype meetings that allow work from home. Lots of people do practical jobs.

screamer1 · 02/03/2020 12:25

Boris Johnson dating absolutely nothing of any use whatsoever
