Public Health England have said there is a confirmed case of #COVID19 in south London, after a member of staff at Wimbledon College became infected in Italy.

MissPoldark · 02/03/2020 11:16

Italy - one of their first cases was a guy who had no links to China or travel, who turned up at the hospital but was sent home the first time without testing. Because this case was missed, it then spread to healthcare workers and other patients, plus other people he had links to in the community.

Faybian · 02/03/2020 11:17

Keynote1 - That really doesn't sound like the symptoms of Covid 19 at all. Blood from the nose is caused by a the tiny blood vessels in your nose breaking as a result if constant blowing and is very normal, nothing to do with your lungs and not a symptom of Covid 19. Brandy is good for colds, have a shot of that then watch Netflix and try not to worry. x

Coronavirus: expect widespread infection in UK ‘fairly soon’, warns health official

Just thinking about the hand sanitiser thing, surely the alcohol percentage means it should contain the alcohol which is more than 60%? I have aloe gel and 70% alcohol and was thinking I would make some up when I run out. Also seen mention of using vodka instead!

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 11:21

According to the WHO, signs of infection include fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

TheRealHousewife · 02/03/2020 11:22

Someone up thread asked were the infected person who’d worked in Bristol had been working ... I’ve been told it was Huawei office's.

Mittens030869 · 02/03/2020 11:23

@ofwarren I agree sadly. Especially since NHS 111 are only testing people who have been overseas in infected areas or those who have been in direct contact with someone who has tested positively to Covid-19.

BeyondReasonablyDoubtsLots · 02/03/2020 11:27

But normal vodka is 37.5%, or at most 45% (iirc) for blue label Smirnoff. Obv you can get higher, but it's a specialist imported item - not something everyone will have in their drinks cupboard.

Babyfairy0923 · 02/03/2020 11:29

Could you link the preppies thread please?

Babyfairy0923 · 02/03/2020 11:29

Preppers!!

ginghamstarfish · 02/03/2020 11:30

So not vodka then, but I think the 70% isopropyl alcohol is ok then, the aloe gel is just the medium to spread it? Anyhow it will be better than nothing when we run out of shop-bought stuff! Will make up a spray bottle maybe and clean phones etc on coming home - just saw a headline saying that the germs can stay on a phone for over 90 hours!

SisterAgatha · 02/03/2020 11:30

ginghamstarfish Now that’s fucking genius!

TheBananaInPyjamas · 02/03/2020 11:32

Sorry reposting as I'm a worrier and this thread moves so quickly.

I am currently suffering from regular cold symptoms, i.e. blocked nose/sneezing. Corona virus symptoms appear to be more of a dry cough, fever and shortness of breath, of which I don't have any of.

However this morning I woke up with an itchy throat and now I'm a bit paranoid!

I've not travelled abroad at all, or been in contact with people who have (as far as I know) however I live in London so have been on the tube a lot.

Would it be silly to self isolate for a bit to see what's happening? Meant to be visiting a hospital tomorrow and worried that if I am really ill then I'll make others. I'm not so worried about health implications for me but couldn't bare to make someone else ill.

Thanks sorry for the repost, didn't think it warranted another thread

Adesignforstrife · 02/03/2020 11:32

Dd (young teenager) is off school today with what might be flu (high temp, nausea, achey, slight cough). She fainted when she tried to get up this morning. I know flu is much more likely but we have been to some "high traffic" public places in the last couple of weeks so I'm keeping a close eye on her. I don't suppose there's anything else I can/should be doing...?

EU Crisis Management Commissioner on coronavirus: "While we should not give in to panic, the situation is likely to still get worse so we need to be prepared and time is of essence"

littledrummergirl · 02/03/2020 11:33

Dd and dh hand gels were both almost out and although I have some coming I was concerned about today.
Although I know its not ideal I mixed rum and vegetable oil together(both in the cupboard) and everyone who left the house this morning had some for today.
I'm hoping that with everyone else using hand gel it will help. I'll be much happier when my parcel arrives though.

SisterAgatha · 02/03/2020 11:40

TheBananaInPyjamas I don’t think it would be silly, if I had the ok of the school to go in to lock down, I’d do it today and be totally ready to go. I have my Brexit supplies left over, recently topped up and I’m a hincher as well so I’ve got rubber gloves and bleach sprays.

I literally just need someone to say the schools are closed and we are on lock down.

NEW: Moscow reports first case of coronavirus t.co/NvPXNanBk8

Oakmaiden · 02/03/2020 11:42

@TheBananaInPyjamas I would be inclined to phone the department your appointment is with, say you are not terribly well, and you wondered if they would prefer you to not come in, or whether they think it will be fine.

@Adesignforstrife I would just keep an eye on her, as she is obviously unwell. I don't see what else you can do - unless you live near one of the centres where they are testing everyone with flu symptoms, in which case you could pop into one of the clinics...?

Bearbehind · 02/03/2020 11:43

I mixed rum and vegetable oil together

I’m baffled by what rum and vegetable oil will achieve apart from making your hands and everything you touch a greasy mess?

buttermilkwaffles · 02/03/2020 11:43

"just saw a headline saying that the germs can stay on a phone for over 90 hours."

Possibly 9 days, which is 216 hours:

I don't suppose there's anything else I can/should be doing...?
This past week I’ve been laid up with the most bizarre virus. Fever and the worst coughing and respiratory symptoms I’ve ever had in my life, but no accompanying flu symptoms such as runny nose or headache. The NHS basically told me to fuck off because I haven’t been to China or Italy. There is nothing you can do except rest at home.
