Today isn't the first COBR meeting and the PM has been to others.

Every government department has a dedicated minister to oversee response to the virus. The government aren't doing nothing.

EnidBlyton · 02/03/2020 09:29

Do we know if the test is absolutely 100% accurate

SirVixofVixHall · 02/03/2020 09:30

I do agree re sick leave policies too.

HasaDigaEebowai · 02/03/2020 09:30

Due to go to Crufts at the weekend . I swing between going and not . Will be using airports and trains to get there. Staying with a relative who is also going so not worrying about the cost and I don’t want to let her down. But I am concerned that it could be a potential feeding ground to spread a virus

All of use who are tracking this and keeping ourselves informed should be avoiding unnecessary public interaction at large scale events IMO. I wouldn't be going.

HasaDigaEebowai · 02/03/2020 09:31

It isn't. You can get a false negative (although I don't think we are aware of any false positives)

hazeyjane · 02/03/2020 09:33

Dd has gone in this morning with a fever. This is because I've already had a letter tgreatening me about her attendance.

Ds is off today too (and was off last Thurs and Fri) as well. He has a temperature and is really unwell....so he will stay off.

We too have had a letter warning us about his attendance - but I will not be responsible for spreading illness to his classmates, and I will put his health and wellbeing before the schools bloody attendance data. He has complex health needs as a result of a genetic condition - every time he has had off has been for genuine illness, appointments which can't be changed or because he has been sent home from school.
It is fucking ridiculous and irreponsible to send out these letters especially if it means people send sick children into school.

NettleTea · 02/03/2020 09:34

@mintyneb I would be interested in any update from the cystic Fibrosis meeting you have today. My daughter is 19 so trying to keep her 'sensible' is somewhat out of my control - she was in London all weekend partying and gigging. I think her attitude now is DGAF and live every minute.

If you want to find hand gel at the moment, you may get lucky in cute gift shops where they sell them in Cath Kidson dispensers, etc.

(Also Primark, Claire's, Peacocks and garden centre gift sections.)

HisValentine · 02/03/2020 09:39

I'm currently not speaking to my DH. I feel he is being selfish continuing going to the gym and the NEC camera show in a few weeks. I have asthma and fibromyalgia and my daughter has a heart defect.

Told him he isn't sharing a bed with me.

EnidBlyton · 02/03/2020 09:42

garden centre for hand gels?
what a great idea

Skyejuly · 02/03/2020 09:42

I'm still doing usual activities like gym etc just being extra cautious but not stopping them so to speak. I would only avoid concerts etc at this stage but my day to day routine is same.

FelicityFebruary · 02/03/2020 09:42

To those of who who keep ill children of school despite the petty bullying of the authorities, thank you. I did the same but the pressure was not so organised when mine was younger and getting ill every few weeks.

I know school attendance is important and these parents usually do too. It is actually the same sense of responsibility.

Skyejuly · 02/03/2020 09:43

My co op had lots of hand gel. I'm refusing to buy more because if in lockdown I will be at home handwashing and gel makes my hands crack anyway which would be worse.

Redpriestandmozart · 02/03/2020 09:43

I'm on a few disability FB groups and people are saying that hand gel is still available from healthcare and disability aid sites. Surgical spirit, particularly for livestock which is generally human grade is still about £10 for a litre on eBay and Amazon.

Spacecadetagain · 02/03/2020 09:44

Our village are due to hold a huge music festival in May . People travel from all over the UK to it . I’m wondering now if they will cancel

Redpenguin2020 · 02/03/2020 09:45

I’ve kept my son off today as he has a low grade fever and cough. I highly doubt it’s CV but don’t want to pass any more germs around at this already testing time.

DefiniteArticle · 02/03/2020 09:46

@BiBiBirdie You are right, thanks for reporting. When it comes to encouraging behaviours that will compromise public health, it's no longer a matter of difference of opinion. Hope MN realise this

hazeyjane · 02/03/2020 09:49

Our local garden centre was selling hand gel...at £8 a bottle!

Skyejuly · 02/03/2020 09:49

That's an outrageous price

TheBananaInPyjamas · 02/03/2020 09:50

Hiya hope it's ok to post here....looking for some advice:

I am currently suffering from regular cold symptoms, i.e. blocked nose/sneezing. Corona virus symptoms appear to be more of a dry cough, fever and shortness of breath, of which I don't have any of.

However this morning I woke up with an itchy throat and now I'm a bit paranoid!

I've not travelled abroad at all, or been in contact with people who have (as far as I know) however I live in London so have been on the tube a lot.

Would it be silly to self isolate for a bit to see what's happening? Meant to be visiting a hospital tomorrow and worried that if I am really ill then I'll make others. I'm not so worried about health implications for me but couldn't bare to make someone else ill.

Thanks! Sorry if this shouldn't be here

BiBiBirdie · 02/03/2020 09:51

Thank you @DefiniteArticle
Others joined me in arguing back and received abuse and whilst I and they have reported I do believe MN should remove threads that descend into bullying.
I'm now being told I'm mental and need help because I worry about my son and don't trust that the NHS can cope.

stace95ro · 02/03/2020 09:54

Just looking to get thoughts from others. I am due to go to Cardiff next week for a concert - I am travelling on the mega bus from Cornwall.

I am concerned as my Dad lives with me and he has stage 2 progressing into stage 3 COPD.

Do you think I would be better off staying at home? He and my partner think I am being ridiculous and panicking but I know that I'd feel horrific if I were to make him poorly.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 02/03/2020 09:56

I mentioned last night about not treating covid SARI with corticosteroids and sorry I can’t remember who mentioned the Lancet article saying that steroids helped reduce the inflammation and someone else asked about it too.
So I’ve just been reading the WHO clinical management guidelines for hospitals in treating COVID patients and it definitely says do not use corticosteroids and why (see screenshot.)
