@stace I would wait and see. I think we will have a better idea later in the week if this is going to be a small number of cases that blows over, or is going to spread a lot.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 02/03/2020 09:58

Also I don’t know if WHO know something we don’t but the no. of uk cases on this graph from yesterday doesn’t add up

The vast majority of people will make a recovery from it and it is a relatively mild illness. Children and otherwise healthy adults seem to be at much lower risk of getting into serious complications you get with this sort of disease.

It’s older people and people with severe underlying conditions that we will be particularly concerned about.

lder people means over 50 by the way, and underlying conditions includes common things like diabetes and high blood pressure.
Men also have a higher mortality rate as apparently women have a stronger immune system.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 10:03

youaretheeggman
I wonder if people who take steroids every day have worse outcomes then?
My son has been on them since 9 months old.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 10:05

I personally wouldn't go Stace
You will be constantly surrounded by people for hours and hours.

mintyneb · 02/03/2020 10:06

nettletea I will come back and give you an update. DD turns 13 this month so that bit younger and more dependent on us.
I dont blame your DD for wanting to just live life to the full but must be very tough for you

EnidBlyton · 02/03/2020 10:07

thanks for that link

Central Banks seem to be employing a demand side solution for a supply side problem. Not unexpected I expect, as they only have one gun, so I guess they figured they should fire it. Too early imho. They would have been better to keep their powder dry. But hey. I imagine it will peeter out after a day. I've always thought the best way to deal with a problem is to deal with the problem. They should be putting pressure on employers to make it easier to mitigate. Re wetherspoons not paying sick leave.

Orchidflower1 · 02/03/2020 10:08

@ofwarren I was wondering that too about the steroids. Ds takes them for asthma but I don’t know if it mean oral ones ( eg prednisalone) or inhalers ( eg clenil)

SkyesBackPack · 02/03/2020 10:10

The red Dotson the WHO map are hard to make out - what a stupid idea to use the same colours! I agree, it makes it look like we have 100+ cases.

Let’s hope it’s human error

Number12 · 02/03/2020 10:11

John Ashworth, MP, health secretary has said that he is disappointed that boris delayed cobra meeting till Monday. Clearly he thought it warranted immediate attention!

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 02/03/2020 10:11

@ofwarren I’ve been on inhaled steroids for 38 years from age 5 and DS for 14 years. I don’t know the answer as to whether it affects outcomes in this case but oral corticosteroids are really very strong and inhaled a much lower dose.

WaterSheep · 02/03/2020 10:13

what a stupid idea to use the same colours!

Agreed.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 10:13

Yeah youaretheeggman my son is on a strong dose of the oral type to prevent organ rejection post transplant.

Newjez · 02/03/2020 10:13

@YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus

Has any advice been given specifically to asthmatic people? My DM, mil and ds are all asthmatic, and all have various treatments that they use. None are symptomatic, but it would be nice to know what they should do should they become symptomatic. I would hate to make things worse

Originalyellowbelly · 02/03/2020 10:13

There is an article in todays DM about Iranians licking religious idols, this could maybe why there is a high amount of cases there.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8063267/Videos-Iranians-LICKING-holy-shrines-despite-coronavirus-outbreak.html

Sorry, I don't know how to do clicky links.

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 10:14

Oral steroids lower your immune system response. If you are on them for more than a few weeks they give you a card to carry around for the next 2 years to alert medical personnel. Inhaled steroids do not do this as the dose is so low.
Anyone on oral steroids should already know that this reduces your immune system response.

I have been totally anxious since seeing friends over the weekend who had returned from abroad 9 days before ( a country where there have been cases but not one of the big issues, they were not staying near the affected area and they were not on any lists provided by NHS as needing to do anything. I have convinced myself I am going to get it, not helped by the fact I gave had a bit of a cold and runny nose for the last week before I saw them. I am terrified of looking after my grandchildren this week in case I pass anything on but can't let my daughter who works down, need to pop to the chemist and get milk but am worried about doing that . I really want to read something not positive but not catastrophic but everything seems to be like that. I am a woman in my 50s but acting like a child, just don't know how to shake this off. I am literally doing nothing at all except panicking as cant switch my brain off.

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 10:16

@Keynote1 Your grandchildren even if they get this virus will not get it worse than a cold anyway. They are not at any real risk.
You are unlikely to have the virus. Just look after yourself as you should for a cold and practise good hand hygiene.

blinkboo · 02/03/2020 10:17

My children are off school today. I'm in Haslemere. I think they'll have to go in tomorrow as not really sustainable but I wanted to see what comes out of today's cobra meeting.
It's probably an overreaction but they are young, I'm not working today and a day off won't do them any harm.

peridito · 02/03/2020 10:17

@Spacecadetagain or anyone else

what's the best way to clean under my fingernails ? They are short but seem to get v grimy .

It's just ocurred to me that the nail brush I use is probably germ infested .Can I clean brush with ..bleach ?? Not use it all ?

WaterSheep · 02/03/2020 10:18

Authorities in China have closed the first of 16 hospitals specially built in Wuhan to tackle the coronavirus epidemic

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 10:19

keynote
I manage my anxiety of this situation by preparing the best I can. Have you looked at the posts on the preppers board to see how to do that? People are generally calm and rational on there.
The problem isn't going to get any better over the next few weeks as the UK cases will keep rising.
Just try and think of the things you CAN do, like wash your hands and keep away from ill people.
