Just send the intern home, Dr John Campbell said you can become infectious is as little at 12 hours time so if they came home last night, just ask the intern to isolate if you want a fire break.

SistemaAddict · 02/03/2020 07:57

@YeahLikeNoThough who has had contact with the person who's been to Milan?

VivaLeBeaver · 02/03/2020 07:58

@YeahLikeNoThough

I think the official advice is only for people who have actually travelled to self quarantine - and I'm unsure if Milan is in the only if you have symptoms or do it even if no symptoms zone?

But a flat mate of such a person wouldn't have to I don't think? Which I agree is a bit bonkers because if flat mate has it then your intern is likely to get it.

Number12 · 02/03/2020 07:58

My anxiety is through the roof this morning feeling forced into taking the kids into school. I need to get a grip don't I?

Neonrain · 02/03/2020 08:03
  • I'm tempted to keep them off today and do an online shop

What?
You wouldn't keep them off with fevers anyway? What the hell.
This is why anyone with underlying issues is in trouble.

HasaDigaEebowai · 02/03/2020 08:03

Dreading the numbers over the next few weeks. Are they still saying close contact is within 2m for at least 15mins?

They are not saying this. it was what they said when they were trying to calm people down about the uber lady. It isn't in the official advice.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 08:03

Totally understand number
It doesnt help that the UK results come out while they are at school.
If you aren't in a position to keep them off, I would go in and ask what extra measures they are taking.

HipHopBanzai · 02/03/2020 08:03

They have definitely said which hospitals were chosen to test. I think I read it in the Guardian. My local trust was one of them.

ShatnersWig · 02/03/2020 08:06

Part of the problem of people getting wound up and OTT about it is people spouting complete and utter bollocks, quite honestly.

This morning, when I went to the local shop to get some milk, the lady behind the counter told me that X big event next week was bound to be cancelled as there are now 36 cases in Gloucestershire. No, I said, there are 36 cases in the whole of the UK - well, confirmed ones, there are no doubt more we just don't know. NO, she insisted, just Gloucestershire. I said but there were only 2 when I went to bed at midnight, it has not gone up to 36 overnight, that is the national figure. But she wouldn't have it. And she's no doubt telling that to everyone this morning and some people will really worry or panic about it.

The fact is that there are people walking round now feeling as if they might have a cold about to start or just feeling a bit under the weather which is inevitably Covid but very mild so they have no idea their sniffle is anything more and it probably won't get into a more noticeable illness so they will carry on as normal. There's nothing we can do about that, hence hygiene. And to stop spouting bollocks on forums and Facebook and in publc.

SistemaAddict · 02/03/2020 08:06

@Neonrain dd often spikes fevers with no known cause. I'd be forever keeping her off if I kept her off every time. She's not unwell. It's me that has the cough but it feels like asthma so I'm probably just worrying myself.

Fourducksate · 02/03/2020 08:07

I feel it’s only me being cautious, but OH is on board. My mum is very close to one of the cases - it’s her partners grandchild’s school, I’ve told her not to go anywhere near either grand kids. Luckily her partner was already on the ball, they bought face masks last week and stocked up on everything, so I’m relieved, she late 70s.

I however have to go into Uni today and will be all morning in a lecture with 2nd year nursing students, who have been out on placement. One of the hospitals they’re in has a Chronovirus unit with patients!

I can’t really not go.

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 08:12

Interesting Hiphop
You'll have to try and find the link as a few people have asked about that before.

ifonly4 · 02/03/2020 08:18

Shatnerswig the problem is that big event next week attracks thousands from all over the world. Over 85,000 use the shuttle buses every day, let alone those that travel by train, car and local buses. People travel for the event and bring family who can also visit the countryside the town well known for character and shopping. They'll be many in confined spaces like bars, marquees.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 02/03/2020 08:19

I know there are mutiple dangers to the "it's only flu" ostrich brigade but actually they have an important role to play.
We really really do not need everyone panicking at the same time. There are many people on here, myself at the top of the list, who are panicking. A lot of us are going to work, taking the kids to school etc but are panicking inside.

If everyone starts panicking simultaneously it would be social and economic disaster. The social unrest could actually mean far worse outcomes for everyone.
Severe panic becomes hysteria - this could result in thousands unncessarily referring themselves to GP./111 thus meaning those who really need it can't access it.
Fights in shops. on petrol forecourts.
Nobody going to work - no food, then utilities fail and nobody to repair them. Nobody helps the family with no food in the house...I could go on.

People do however need to do what they are told with regards to isolation, quarrantine, lockdowns, handwashing, social distancing.

Such a difficult balancing act.

Wehttam · 02/03/2020 08:21

Parents, PLEASE ask your school what hand washing facilities they have and if they are rolling out awareness in lessons when you drop the kids off this morning.

Lots of worried teachers in difficult situations because their Heads won’t take action.

ShatnersWig · 02/03/2020 08:22

ifonly That wasn't my point. I wasn't talking about that event being cancelled; that was merely how the main subject came up, which is people stating as gospel stuff that isn't true. She insisted there are 36 confirmed cases in Gloucestershire when the facts as things stand are 2 in the county and 36 in the UK as a whole. She believes that. And other people she will tell will believe her, and those people will be on the local Facebook pages passing it on. It happened last week, people spouting absolute bollocks about it. And that's half the problem.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 02/03/2020 08:22

Of course we have to take the threat seriously, but common sense needs to be applied. There are no reported cases in the area where I live but in the last couple of days I have heard of a parent trying to get the school to cancel a trip to local museum; and the owner of a Chinese takeaway posting a plea for people to continue using Chinese takeaways/restaurants. Apparently their takings are being affected by people being frightened of catching the virus.
Both of these are ridiculous in the extreme IMHO.

NaturalBornWoman · 02/03/2020 08:23

@ShatnersWig I hope they do cancel that event though. I don't want my daughter to go, and I won't feel happy about being in the office afterwards.

User1775564212 · 02/03/2020 08:24

@Comenext whereabouts is that?

Newjez · 02/03/2020 08:25

It's a fine fine line between panic and complacency.

I fully understand the government don't want a riot, but it would be nice if people took this seriously. A dear friend just posted, "it's only flu, blah blah". Her mother survived lung cancer not long ago FFS, and is missing a lot of lung! I'm mean, seriously!

@ShatnersWig My father lives in the town where the big event is being held next week . People travel from all over the place to come to it . The place is heaving with visitors and these visitors also visit the pretty areas around the place of which I live in one so this huge influx of people and movement is worrying So I could understand why they may consider cancelling . As of yesterday there weren’t any plans to but IMO I think it it should be . My DD aged nine is very anxious and asking not to go to school today .

ofwarren · 02/03/2020 08:26

S. Korea reports 123 more cases of new coronavirus, total now at 4,335 t.co/R5W09vocG5

alloutoffucks · 02/03/2020 08:26

I think there are dangers of minimising and catastrophising. So that thread about would you self isolate if you had no symptoms but had been officially told you should - 23% said no. Some will not be able to because work won't pay them. But some will be thinking - its only flu, we have flu every year circulating.
