Aibu to really NOT be worried about Corona virus?

Bigearringsbigsmile · 01/03/2020 17:18

I am dumbfounded by the number of people talking about not travelling, not sending children to school, stockpiling food etc etc

I'm just carrying on with normal life. Going abroad next weekend. Getting trains etc.

I dont get the hysteria.

OP posts:
cloudspotter · 08/04/2020 22:19

@slightlyjaded

Indeed! It's not often that a debate concludes quite as decisively as this one.

I wonder whether anyone has the balls to admit they changed their mind in the past month?

Or do they feel like they were still right, and this is a lot and of fuss and nonsense about nothing?

Rocketmam · 08/04/2020 22:26

This aged well...

TheCanterburyWhales · 08/04/2020 22:30

Probably a fair few namechanges gone on with red faces.
I noticed the poster who called me a scaremongering liar disappeared around lockdown time.

SussEggsRoyale · 08/04/2020 22:36

I especially Hmm at the comments:

"I am still going to Italy in a few weeks"

And

"I will get back to you when the death toll hits 4 figures in the UK"

But rather impressed with the foresight of:

"It's easy not to worry at the moment. Might be less easy this time next month."

SlightyJaded · 08/04/2020 22:44

Several people on this thread very adamant that it was all nonsense and that they wouldn't be adapting their lives no matter what. It's fascinating to me that we have undergone a complete change to the way we live in SUCH as short time. This highlights just how quickly it's happened.

Bimbleboo · 08/04/2020 23:12

Wow. This aged spectacularly

blue25 · 08/04/2020 23:19

Wow the smug idiots on this thread. How you all feeling now?

Shotofvodka · 08/04/2020 23:24

@SpokeTooSoon how apt your user name seems now

EugenesAxe · 08/04/2020 23:25

Bimbleboo I completely agree! I was reading the opening comments about skiing thinking ‘Er... how?’

Then I had the idea to check the date and the picture became clearer 😂

Kyliesgoldshorts · 08/04/2020 23:32

I agree with OP. I am not working through forced restrictions. I look at the figures of deaths from last year to this and this virtually no change.
I like staying at home and am loving having my children at home with me so that’s the bonus for me. However I go to shops and see people masked up with hats on and just their eyes visible and I think it’s a bit over the top.
There is a local shop not to far from my house. I’ve seen people go to it that are usually buying lots of alcohol and stinking of weed yet they are covered up for fear of breathing in my air and look at me like shit if I dare to enter the shop when they are inside (a two person customer rule at the shop). It’s insane how people are reacting.

Pickles89 · 08/04/2020 23:32

Can you imagine how fascinating it would be to read the Mumsnet entries of 1938/39?

blue25 · 08/04/2020 23:34

Surely no-one still agrees with the OP @kyliesgoldshorts

whatnametopick · 08/04/2020 23:36

Yabu OP Grin

SlightyJaded · 08/04/2020 23:37

@Kyliesgoldshorts. Seriously - you still think the OP was right and it's all been 'blown out of proportion'?

OK then.

Also - smoking weed and drinking alcohol might be anti-social and bad for your health, but they are not comparable with a deadly virus. So completely understand why they are looking at you like that if you are entering a shop when they are already in there (and therefore the two person limit is being breached).

QuaffthisKindNepenthe · 08/04/2020 23:41

I didn't post on this thread, but I was not too worried about COVID-19 a month ago. Now, with my best mate's husband on life support since March 28th and our household income set to nought, it's all quite horribly different.

BigBangMerely · 08/04/2020 23:44

Wow first time seeing this thread. Seeing the start was quite worrying until I realised the dates!

To be honest I was keeping up to date with the news (probably too much) from mid-January onwards regarding the Virus.

Would be interesting to see how many people still aren't giving the pandemic the caution it deserves and how many have changed their minds as things have progressed.

backtonormalname · 08/04/2020 23:51

people keep saying, compare the figures for deaths from this year to last to get a true picture but I think the changes brought by lockdown don't allow this comparison because there will be less deaths from other causes such as drunked weekend fights, car accidents, other pathogens (e.g. salmonella caught eating out), heard today that the stunning drop in pollution is meaning less asthma deaths and less heart attacks/strokes. To actually get the picture you'd have to lockdown again next year at the same time presuming far less Covid around and then compare?

Madhairday · 08/04/2020 23:54

This is so interesting, living history right here. Just one month ago. Anyone who posted here case to come back?😂

Isawthathaggis · 09/04/2020 00:04

I’m also not that bothered really.
I have no parents/grandparents/extended family to be worried about. My very small family are healthy and no-one in the at risk or vulnerable categories.

I’m helping my elderly neighbours as much as
I can.
I’m observing the guidelines, restricting our travel etc but it all feels very surreal.
Went into town yesterday to give blood and it was weird. Free on street parking though - so that was nice.
Currently more worried about the economy and lack of exit strategy.

TheClitterati · 09/04/2020 00:08

I wonder if any of the early non-worried posters who were still planning to travel are stranded out there in the world?
Or had to be rescued by uk govt?

My colleague went to Italy March 10th & has not been able to get back to uk. He will be in Italy for the foreseeable future.

mrshoho · 09/04/2020 00:08

OP have you had a change of opinion now?

donquixotedelamancha · 09/04/2020 00:13

I look at the figures of deaths from last year to this and this virtually no change.

Oh FFS. Last Spring was a bumper flu season and fewer people are dying atm from other causes like car accidents. Many older people who deteriorated rapidly may not be tested before death and so not counted.

We are at the start of the infection. A very small proportion of the population have had it. Even so, we've had to shut the country to keep the death rate down and it's still approaching 1000 a day.

If we had not locked down that number would keep rising until (best guess) hitting tens of thousands a day.

Can you really not extrapolate what the UK would be like in another month if nothing was done? Have you not seen the images from Italy and Spain.

shineaflight · 09/04/2020 00:24

@KaptenKrusty

"Yeah I don’t care about it at all tbh! I’m taking 6 different flights over the never 5 weeks and haven’t cancelled any plans."

You sure about that?

And @otterturk how was Italy after we all totally overreacted? Grin

feelingverylazytoday · 09/04/2020 00:27

It would be interesting if OP would come back.

alloutoffucks · 09/04/2020 00:41

We will have a relatively small increase in deaths overall because we have done a lock down. The rate of people dying is with us taking drastic measures. Are some people really thinking if hundreds of thousands of people don't die that means we should not have lock downed?
Lock down is a major thing to do. If we did that and still have hundreds of thousands of people dying it would mean that lock down was a waste of time and should not have happened.
