Aibu to really NOT be worried about Corona virus?

Bigearringsbigsmile · 01/03/2020 17:18

I am dumbfounded by the number of people talking about not travelling, not sending children to school, stockpiling food etc etc

I'm just carrying on with normal life. Going abroad next weekend. Getting trains etc.

I dont get the hysteria.

OP posts:
MadameBee · 01/03/2020 17:40

I am so sick of the 5000 threads on this.

Hmm
DesLynamsMoustache · 01/03/2020 17:41

Ah the old 'it's just flu' myth for the millionth time.

I'm not worried about it, but I'm young and in good health and can afford to stay home if needed to self-isolate and not worry about having to pay the bills. Plenty of people are in very different situations, and if you have a child with lung disease or some other condition, I'd challenge anyone not to be concerned about it.

BonnesVacances · 01/03/2020 17:41

Coronavirus is the new Brexit. It's a very useful way of identifying the fuckwits. Grin

Oh how supercilious are those who won't be adversely affected, spreading it everywhere, and accusing the vulnerable of hysteria.

Enjoy your lofty view OP. Maybe you could learn some facts while you're up there?

otterturk · 01/03/2020 17:43

Yeah, not bothered. Still going to Italy in a few weeks.

DressingGownofDoom · 01/03/2020 17:44

'If this virus doesn’t get ya something else will - what’s the point in panicking - is the mass panic helping to stop the virus??'

It does seem people are out panic buying soap and hand sanitiser, which will help slow the spread of the virus, yes.

GreenTulips · 01/03/2020 17:45

It's not killing any more people than a normal flu virus would
Are you as scared of the flu?

Flu doesn’t close cities or cancel flights or quarantine 1000 people in a hotel.

Flu doesn’t close mass gathering or cancel places of worship.

Flu doesn’t insist people work from home or close schools.

Funny that?

TitaniaQoF · 01/03/2020 17:46

YANBU. I’m with you OP. Don’t remember all this craziness about swine flu and that was far deadlier. And no, I don’t have the superiority of good health. Neither do the majority of my family.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 01/03/2020 17:46

I'm with you OP. The hysteria beyond ridiculous and I say that as an asthmatic.

Catapillarsruletheworld · 01/03/2020 17:46

I’m not concerned for myself, partner or children. We are all healthy and neither very old or very young.

I am however a little nervous for my dad and my DPs mum. DPs mum as she is getting fairly elderly now and My DF, who is quite a bit younger than DPs mum, but is a chronic asthma sufferer everything goes on his chest. Obviously it could be potentially a lot more serious for them.

Fairyliz · 01/03/2020 17:47

Well for those people worried you could get killed in a car crash tomorrow so are you going to stop driving? You could fall downstairs and break your neck so are you moving to a bungalow?
Surely the think to do is to take sensible precautions.
So when you drive I don’t drink, keep to the speed limit wear a seat belt. For coronavirus I practice good hand hygiene and follow official guidance.
Not a lot else you can do, worrying will just make it worse

Funkycats · 01/03/2020 17:47

I think there's worrying, and then there's putting plans in place for 'just in case'.
I'm not worrying about having to self isolate because I have food on my house.
I'm not worrying about whether or not me, my DH or my frail elderly mother will catch it because worrying won't help.
I am keeping a eye on what's going on though. Forewarned is forearmed.
I wouldn't go on holiday at min because I would not want to be stuck in quarantine miles from home.

idontlike789 · 01/03/2020 17:48

I agree it's almost like they can't wait for someone to say you must all self isolate and yes the country will ground to a halt.
It's the British way to keep calm and carry on all this hysteria is silly and unnecessary. If we all need to self isolate and I doubt that will happen it will be done with planning. We all can't just stay home .
For gods sake the shops shut 1 day at Christmas and 5am Boxing Day people are queuing. No one will be able to isolate for 2 weeks .

Floralnomad · 01/03/2020 17:49

YANBU , I’m with you OP and I say that as someone who has numerous health issues, am steroid dependent , have asthma and a severe pectus excavatum. I’m afraid life is way too short to worry about something that ‘may’ affect me , I will leave the worrying to if I get it .

IceColdCat · 01/03/2020 17:50

I agree with pp about taking sensible precautions. There's a middle ground between panicking and being completely blasé.

QuietCrotchgoblins · 01/03/2020 17:50

I work with vulnerable children who have weakened immune systems. I'm worried.

It's unlikely my family will suffer the worst effects but I know many that could die from this.

Seasonal flu we vaccinate the most vulnerable. We don't have that option with coronvirus. The NHS is on its knees already. I don't even want to thing what could happen in a pandemic....

QuietCrotchgoblins · 01/03/2020 17:51

Also worried of the effect of the economy. It already looks ropey and Brexit is fast approaching....

Grumpbum123 · 01/03/2020 17:52

I’m imnocomprimised
Relative has severe asthma
Neither of us are worrying. Worrying is not going to help at all. Life carries on

mrsbyers · 01/03/2020 17:52

I don’t come from any sense of health privilege infact the exact opposite and it’s just ridiculous , unless there’s a case linked to me directly I won’t be changing any plans or worrying about it at all

penguinsonaslide · 01/03/2020 17:52

YABVU unless you know something we don't. We know so little about this virus that at the moment everyone should be worried, frankly.

ClubfootMaestro · 01/03/2020 17:53

I agree with pp about taking sensible precautions. There's a middle ground between panicking and being completely blasé

Well, exactly.

ch3rrycola · 01/03/2020 17:54

I'm type 1 diabetic, cleaning at a station where there's loads of Chinese students and various other nationalities. Lots of germs! But hey need to work so can't afford to be worried.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/03/2020 17:55

I don't see the point in stressing over it. We can't do anything about it.

I'm carrying on life as normal, I practise good hygiene anyway with regards to hand washing/coughing into tissues, so aside from locking myself in the house I can't personally do any more than that. I still have to go to work, the shops, take DS to school. I'm not due to go abroad until July so I will reassess the situation nearer the time, but I still intend to go out and socialise locally.

vodkaredbullgirl · 01/03/2020 17:56

Too many posts on this, first one Ive replied to.

Is it near the end of the world, floods, fires, winds and now viruses.

coconuttelegraph · 01/03/2020 17:57

Is everyone else getting this advert Grin

Aibu to really NOT be worried about Corona virus?
Syrinx89 · 01/03/2020 17:58

Totally agree with you. We can all take precautions, but the hysteria is not a good thing! Being worried 24/7 is not going to help anyone. Just have good personal hygiene and go about our days... That's all we can do really!
