Aibu to really NOT be worried about Corona virus?

Bigearringsbigsmile · 01/03/2020 17:18

I am dumbfounded by the number of people talking about not travelling, not sending children to school, stockpiling food etc etc

I'm just carrying on with normal life. Going abroad next weekend. Getting trains etc.

I dont get the hysteria.

GreenLeaf88, may you live in interesting times!

Bartlet · 03/03/2020 18:48

Ooooh. We’ve got someone who knows someone who works with someone who’s married to someone who knows something.

But we’re not allowed to know what.

Cos it’s top secret but this guy’s wife is blabbing to people at work who tells his wife who posts cryptically on a totally open website.

YANBU

FelicityFebruary · 03/03/2020 19:22

The reasons to take this very seriously are all in public already as has been said.

Cakemonger · 03/03/2020 19:34

I am not worried about getting it myself as I am healthy, but I take it seriously because I don't want to pass it on to anyone else. I also dread the effects of two weeks of self isolation in the house on my depression so am going to do my best to take precautions. If I were in a high risk group physically I would absolutely be scared.

Cakemonger · 03/03/2020 19:50

Normally I am very much in the 'no point getting hysterical/the media exaggerates most things' camp but viral pandemics are truly concerning. I didn't realise until watching the Pandemic doc on Netflix that we're really in no better position than we were in 1918 when Spanish flu hit in terms of fighting viruses, especially with modern travel accelerating the spread across the globe. Scientists are working on a universal flu vaccine but it's still years away. Scary stuff.

justcleanyourbloodyteeth · 03/03/2020 19:51

@debbs77 go on then, I'll bite. What's really going on?

fedup21 · 03/03/2020 19:53

My partner has today worked with a lady whose husband is privy to more information than the public have been given

Can you tell us the information-then we will be fully informed and also able to take it seriously?

Robuns · 03/03/2020 19:59

@GreenLeaf88 very similar has happened before, but no one here was probably arsed as it didn't reach the UK.

itsgettingweird · 03/03/2020 19:59

I'm worried as I'm worried like I was swine flu.

Knowing I could be ill and not knowing what effect it could have on me.

Also worried as have 2 parents on chemo.

However I'm not panic worried like people think we should be. I don't think my colleague was impressed today when she asked how worried I was and I said I could get hit by a bus on the way home from work and corona would be the least of my worries!

For me it's perspective. We could be facing a major pandemic. It is actually in my county as of today.

But I don't think currently the risks to me outweighs risks I take everyday by driving a car for example.

friendineed · 03/03/2020 20:19

I have a disabled DS and asthmatic DD, an elderly mum and I work in the NHS. I'm as worried about it as I would any debilitating illness. Just the thought of struggling to look after the DCs and DM when I'm ill horrifies me.

ZagZig · 06/03/2020 17:31

Hmmmm all the threads have been removed from aibu....i was enjoying the hysteria over there mnhq

AlphaJura · 06/03/2020 18:02

I was chatting to my 102 year old grandmother today who, was born in 1918, the year of the Spanish flu pandemic. Obviously she was only a baby, but she survived and grew up hearing about it. It killed more people worldwide than WW1 and most people lost someone close to them. She said her father got it, but luckily he recovered. Millions didn't. Flu is truly horrendous (I had it twice and felt like I was near death) it still kills, but as it mutates, not everyone gets it at the same time as some people will be immune to similar strains.

This virus is a whole new kettle of fish. There's no vaccine at present and as it's new, many more people are susceptible to getting and spreading it. Also, they don't know how it will behave or mutate. What if it gets stronger or starts to kill more people? They just don't know yet. I think it's wise to be cautious instead of burying your head in the sand.

SpokeTooSoon · 06/03/2020 19:12

If you’re self-isolating, you can go in your garden, right? Yes I know, not everyone has one.

You could still drive your car to an open space and go for a walk, surely? Making sure not to walk close to anyone or touch anything?

KenDodd · 06/03/2020 20:05

I think the only people who aren't scared can't count.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/03/2020 20:17

"You could still drive your car to an open space and go for a walk, surely? Making sure not to walk close to anyone or touch anything?"

NO

ItsNotJustTheFuckingFlu · 06/03/2020 21:52

Of course you couldn't go for a drive if you're supposed to be self isolating.

As unlikely as it is to happen, what happens if you have a car accident and the people coming to help you aren't aware you're supposed to be at home due to possible infection?

Self isolation means isolating yourself from the public, to stop the spread to others.

Skyejuly · 06/03/2020 22:41

No. Self isolating means at home. Not driving.

MsSafina · 10/03/2020 13:16

Worth reading this thread from a health care worker in Bergamo.

Thank you @MsSafina

ShanghaiDiva · 10/03/2020 13:41

Self isolation means stay at home.
I am not condoning the way the chinese dealt with people who didn’t comply with isolation rules, but reading comments in mumsnet, it is clear why tough measures are necessary.
The situation in China is improving due to people staying at home. Friends of mine in Jiangsu province have been at home for 45 days. They go out to go shopping a couple of times a week, but that is is. This is in a city with no lockdown.

Lycidas · 20/03/2020 13:33

Bump.

How are you feeling now @faracrossthepond

oldbeforem · 22/03/2020 21:04

@Bigearringsbigsmile maybe if people had been a bit more worried and we'd taken action sooner, we'd be in a better position.

cloudspotter · 08/04/2020 21:49

How fascinating.....

SlightyJaded · 08/04/2020 22:14

Isn't it? @cloudspotter

And to think this was just a month ago....
