Aibu to really NOT be worried about Corona virus?

I am dumbfounded by the number of people talking about not travelling, not sending children to school, stockpiling food etc etc

I'm just carrying on with normal life. Going abroad next weekend. Getting trains etc.

I dont get the hysteria.

OP posts:
Fieldofgreycorn · 09/04/2020 00:55

If we had not locked down that number would keep rising until (best guess) hitting tens of thousands a day.

Even if it didn’t 1000 a day for 6 months would be about 180,000 deaths.

Peopleshouses · 09/04/2020 04:18

Ha I wrote on here about a month ago under a different name and was taking it very seriously I'm smug to say

Isolatedbunny · 09/04/2020 04:38

I agree with you. I do understand the caution around it but it's gone to far with the economy. The old and vulnerable need to isolate if they consider it a high risk but otherwise we need to get on with life. I know far more people that have died of cancer and been diagnosed with awful diseases like MS that corona doesn't scare me. I will take my chances. Dying and disease is a part of life. If they televised all the deaths and diagnoses of cancer every day on the news people would be terrified too.

HappydaysArehere · 09/04/2020 05:50

If it makes people feel happier to compare this with flu then let them gain this comfort. Also those who refuse to watch the news because they don’t like it and I have heard the lock down is only for the NHS. This as if the NHS has nothing to do with our lives.
In fact this is a really, virulent nasty virus which is not controlled other than by isolation. It could mutate into untold nastiness. So while the world’s scientists work hard on providing us with some protection the best we can do is follow guide lines and accept it is bloody depressing but the right thing to do.

Frownette · 09/04/2020 06:42

This thread...I started reading it without looking at the dates and was baffled by the stats quoted.

What a turnaround

Frownette · 09/04/2020 06:43

I thought they'd gone a bit loopy mentioning if it went into 4 figures!

BelleSausage · 09/04/2020 06:49

I hope this thread serves as a wake up call to all those sticking their fingers in their ears and bleating about the economy and saving those who would have died anyway.

A pregnant woman died this week in labour because of the complications caused by coronavirus.

And although that individual story is shocking there are now 90,000 of those stories out there. That number is still rising fast. And that number doesn’t include anyone who has died outside of hospital.

The mayor of NY has just mooted the idea of digging trenches in Central Park to serve as temporary mass graves.

But, of course, we are all over reacting and this will all blow over and life will return completely to normal.

If you still believe that then you are part of the problem, not part of the solution.

TreeTopTim · 09/04/2020 07:02

I will admit that to begin with I wasn't taking it too seriously. I was taking precautions such as washing my hands more often, not going out unnecessarily and not mixing with people outside my household. However even I look back at my thoughts last month and now and can't believe those were my thoughts so I wonder if the OP and all those others still think the same.

Rocketmam · 09/04/2020 07:26

I'd imagine these are exactly the same people who are now screeching about the economy, how schools should open tomorrow (because they suddenly have faux concern for vulnerable abused children they didn't give two thoughts to a month ago), that it is ok if they visit relatives because they are special, and who are determined that this is all futile becuase 'those poor people' would have died anyway.

italy93 · 09/04/2020 07:34

I have a family member (won't go into more detail for fear of outing) who STILL thinks we're overreacting. They pop round on a regular basis, often with kids in tow, and it infuriates me.

Despite my request that they leave (falls on deaf ears) this happens almost daily!

I pray that no one becomes infected, but I do wonder if they would finally listen.

madcatladyforever · 09/04/2020 07:37

Haha this is a joke right? My friend and colleague watched several people die with it yesterday and we live in a remote area.
Look at the daily death figures.
Go fly and good luck with that.

Iggly · 09/04/2020 07:41

Those people bleating about the impact on the economy, maybe, just maybe, you’ll realise that you’ve historically got this all wrong in terms of priorities.

We do not serve the economy. The economy serves us.

If we want to have a strong economy, we need to invest in a healthy population. A healthy population = a strong economy.

The fact is, governments around the world have not prioritised our healthcare systems (including public health and social care), and covid 19 has shown that up. As a result we’ve had to take such extreme measures.

Hopefully this is the wake up call we need (although, like the world war, it took two of them before we managed to get long lasting peace). We should invest in the things which benefit everyone.

BelleSausage · 09/04/2020 07:53

@ madcatladyforever

It’s a zombie thread. I just thought it was interesting to see if the OPs opinion has changed at all.

BilboBercow · 09/04/2020 08:04

This aged well

bobstersmum · 09/04/2020 08:04

Bet you feel a right idiot now don't you op.

LadyGAgain · 09/04/2020 08:14

I'm gutted that the OP was wrong and the rest of us were right. Over 900 dead yesterday and that's only in hospital.

Bet you wished you'd taken precautions sooner.

Stay safe and well people.

BuffaloCauliflower · 09/04/2020 08:27

A very interesting point @backtonormalname and one aspect I hadn’t fully considered. They do seem to be over recording Covid deaths on one hand (listing deaths as Covid despite many co-morbidities and it not being clearly the cause of death) as well as under on another (people dying untested at home) it’ll be hard to get the full picture of this.

BuffaloCauliflower · 09/04/2020 08:35

@BelleSausage that’s not quite what’s being reported on the pregnant woman. It says she died, tested positive for CV-19, and it hasn’t been ruled out as contributing to her death. Nothing conclusive that CV-19 or complications from it was the cause only that it was present. We don’t yet know what exactly led to her death. As someone currently pregnant and trying to keep calm in this it’s really important there’s clarity on all the facts to avoid panic (whilst obviously taking it all very seriously)

Wouldyou66 · 09/04/2020 08:43

@faracrossthepond do you think there is a reason you just didn’t “get it” a month ago? A lack of understanding? Gaps in education? Anything you could do differently moving forward?

shineaflight · 09/04/2020 08:52

@Isolatedbunny the op wrote this on 1st March. Not sure they even feel the same now.

Do you realise just what situation we'd be in in a couple more weeks without these measures? Confused

PuppyMonkey · 09/04/2020 08:52

This thread reminds me of all those films where everybody is refusing to see the danger and the clever hero/brilliant scientist - usually Jeff Goldblum - tries to explain and.... oh shit, he was right but it’s too late. Shock

Life finds a way.

shineaflight · 09/04/2020 08:53

@italy93 why are you letting them in?????

Salene · 09/04/2020 09:01

That worked out well for you then didn't it. I see early in post someone said they were going skiing to Italy. Words fail me.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 09/04/2020 09:01

I think some people are just ridiculously stubborn

I have two colleagues who still apparently won’t allow COVID-19 to impact their lives

And I work for the NHS Shock how we work has completely changed we are now caring for people who are physically unwell (mh unit) we are not healthcare workers

They are just being utter twats who won’t admit they are wrong (no concerns on how they are working) and constantly make some reference to something Marx said about death and statistics that us less intelligent colleagues can’t apparently grasp Hmm which just enforces their twatishness

kingis · 09/04/2020 09:14

I am not that worried. I don't personally know anybody who has it. Also none of my friends of friends have had it. It feels that the whole thing is happening somewhere else. I do however follow the rules.
