I am dumbfounded by the number of people talking about not travelling, not sending children to school, stockpiling food etc etc

I'm just carrying on with normal life. Going abroad next weekend. Getting trains etc.

I dont get the hysteria.

NotTerfNorCis · 02/03/2020 21:24

It's easy not to worry at the moment. Might be less easy this time next month.

Helenpretzel · 02/03/2020 21:25

Anyone not worried is being callous and short sighted. Let alone all the vulnerable people in this country, the fact that if the NHS gets overwhelmed it's more like a 20percent death rate that will include young fit and healthy people, spare a thought for all the people in countries with less developed health systems where this will be catastrophic. Posters mentioning how many people die of starvation etc, how can you not see that those very same populations will be most vulnerable to this!?? If we can all play a part in minimising the spread I think it is our moral duty to society to do that.

BusterMove · 02/03/2020 21:26

What good will worrying actually do, though?
Take precautions. Stock up your cupboards, wash your hands, avoid obviously sick people. Bt what else can we do? Nothing.

OneHanded · 02/03/2020 21:32

Low-immune asthmatic here who isn’t bothered at all. Had sepsis from a chest infection last year and nearly stopped breathing. These things happen it’s the preppers who cause the biggest problems by speeding up societal halter.

FelicityFebruary · 02/03/2020 21:41

My dp said tonight life should just go on with minimum disruption. I think that callous and selfish.

I find it hard to take tbh. I feel we ought to be willing to sacrifice more to protect our own. For example!e lets not have large gatherings. Lets get people working from home more wherever possible.

qwertyl · 02/03/2020 21:50

There are 3287 people killed every day on the roads - guarantee most people got in a car today. The hysteria is unbelievable and that alone is likely to overwhelm the NHS.

Ihatesundays · 02/03/2020 21:51

If they think it will happen why is crufts going ahead, why have thousands of football supporters come to my town tonight.
It’s either serious or not, the mixed messages we are getting are frankly bullshit.

LittleRootie · 02/03/2020 21:58

I'm baffled by the hysteria too.

FelicityFebruary · 02/03/2020 22:01

It's bad.

KenDodd · 02/03/2020 22:01

Wouldn't it have been great if China had massively overreacted and got all hysterical over the first few cases, taking extreme measures to contain it back in December. Oh well! We are where we are.

Oakmaiden · 02/03/2020 22:10

I keep things in perspective and do my own risk assessment.... I will carry on as normal...I will comply with any restrictions my work, or the government place on me but I won’t take it upon myself to restrict my actions over and above that.

Well, that doesn't sound like doing your own risk assessment. It sounds like not bothering and letting your boss/the government risk assess for you.

Not saying that is wrong - for the most part I am carrying on as normal and will follow government advice when and if it becomes relevant to me. For example - there was a boy sat in my son's classroom all week who is now quarantined as his dad has a positive diagnosis. Lots of children are no longer going to school. My son is as that is the advice we have been given. I am trusting the powers that be have got it right - but that doesn't stop me feeling mildly anxious about the situation and wanting to stay informed about how it is progressing.

Oakmaiden · 02/03/2020 22:14

@chuttypicks

Your infographic is completely laughable. Yes, you survived all those things. Lucky you.

Of course putting complete nonsense, such as Nostradumus' end of the world prediction, alongside SARS is more than a bit callous.

MajesticWhine · 02/03/2020 22:17

For those saying it is callous and selfish to not be worried, you can take the appropriate actions without worrying surely? Some people just aren't worriers; you can still be a responsible human.

LittleRootie · 02/03/2020 22:20

that doesn't stop me feeling mildly anxious about the situation and wanting to stay informed about how it is progressing.

And that's fine and perfectly rational, it's what i'm doing. That's not the same as stockpiling, media meltdown, people obsessing over every sneeze and cough. It's out of all proportion

user764329056 · 02/03/2020 22:23

Figgygal, well said 👏🏼

NebbiaZanzare · 02/03/2020 22:28

Seconded with knobs on from here in Lombardia.

Helenpretzel · 02/03/2020 22:33

Most people don't change behaviour much until they get worried (and often only when it affects then) unfortunately. For those people that do change behaviour before that, that is great but I expect they are in the minority. There is plenty we can do. Obviously hygiene, but also avoiding unnessecary travel, crowds, taking extra care around anyone you know is more vulnerable, learning more about the virus, making sure not to unnecessarily tax the health service with non essential problems when this kicks off, teaching kids hygiene, calling out people who have bad hygiene, listening to the expert advice........the list goes on......being less selfish in general. And maybe after the worst of this is over (and hopefully is a best case scenario not the realistic worst case scenario many experts fear) we can try to support measures that will alleviate similar issues in the future. That includes supporting funding to continue vaccine development for the next virus to hit (which it will) and supporting governments and policies that grow our NHS not cut it, and also recognising that we are a very interlinked world and those of us in wealthier countries should perhaps stop treating holidays and flying everywhere as a right and be happy to have a few less if it overall helps all of us.

Helenpretzel · 02/03/2020 22:38

And just a note. Telling anxious people to stop worrying is pretty pointless, especially when many of the most anxious people are likely to have done huge amounts of research on the coronavirus. I think most worried people appreciate the worry doesn't actually help, and too much is unhelpful but not caring at all about something that will result in so many deaths does seem callous.

Helenpretzel · 02/03/2020 22:39

And also totally wish China had worried enough to "over react" in that crucial first few weeks (those crucial first few weeks we are probably in right now)

AdaFromYorkshire · 02/03/2020 23:04

Helenpretzel, that's the most sensible post about coronovirus that I've seen on here, thank you.

TheVanguardSix · 02/03/2020 23:09

Mic drop helenpretzel
Best post I've read about coronavirus.

LittleRootie · 02/03/2020 23:09

Telling anxious people to stop worrying is pretty pointless

Equally, telling people who are taking sensible precautions but otherwise not worried that they should be more worried is pointless

Rainbowb · 02/03/2020 23:13

It baffles me why there hasn’t been an international condemnation of the practices that led to this disease coming about.

bluebell34567 · 02/03/2020 23:14

one of the very bad downside is to be quarantined at a hotel-not being able to leave (that happened in Tenerife)

planningaheadtoday · 02/03/2020 23:19

I was told by my doctor this week that the consequences of me getting this virus could be very very serious. I've been advised not to go into public places.

Quite difficult with 3 at school coming and going each day and one at uni.

I'm in my early 50's so was surprised when the doctor said this. I do have poor health and underlying issues.

To be honest, people not taking this seriously terrifies me. If people really took notice we could delay the vast majority of cases until after a vaccine is in production. So much heartache prevented and loved ones saved.

We are not all so lucky to have good health and youth.
