Aibu to really NOT be worried about Corona virus?

Bigearringsbigsmile · 01/03/2020 17:18

I am dumbfounded by the number of people talking about not travelling, not sending children to school, stockpiling food etc etc

I'm just carrying on with normal life. Going abroad next weekend. Getting trains etc.

I dont get the hysteria.

You are speaking from a position of health privilege. Sure if looking at it from a selfish point of view it probably doesn’t matter to you but it may matter to the person who catches it from you. A premature baby / someone with a supressed immune system / an elderly person with heart failure who gets corona virus from your droplets could die

KaptenKrusty · 01/03/2020 17:23

Yeah I don’t care about it at all tbh! I’m taking 6 different flights over the never 5 weeks and haven’t cancelled any plans. I have to travel on the tube daily for work anyway so I don’t see how taking a flight could be any more of a risk tbh!

I’m also shocked at how many people are losing heaps of money because they are afraid to travel? I think that’s over the top!

I am however a bit worried that my trip to Japan might be disrupted - I hope it’s not as I’m really looking forward to this trip!

AutumnCrow · 01/03/2020 17:24

OP, you'll have a different perception of this than someone like me who is in a high risk category.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 01/03/2020 17:25

You dont get the hysteria about a virus which is killing people and theres not much knowledge about it yet, let alone a cure or vaccine?

Do you want praise for your lack of understanding?

ParkheadParadise · 01/03/2020 17:26

I don't get the hysteria either.

Abraid2 · 01/03/2020 17:26

I am intending to go off skiing next weekend unless official advice is not to go or unless the French alps become hotspots. I could self-quarantine without too much trouble as I work from home. Ditto the friends we are going with.

AriadnesFilament · 01/03/2020 17:28

How many of these ‘I don’t get it’ threads do we need?!

WobblyAllOver · 01/03/2020 17:28

I am concerned that this has the ability to cripple markets and the economy, lose peoples jobs and create a mass panic.

As for the virus itself unfortunately I think it's a fact of life that this will happen ever so often and whilst I don't want to be ill unless I hibernate forever there will always be something so I am not overly worried in that respect.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 01/03/2020 17:29

It's not killing any more people than a normal flu virus would.
Are you as scared of the flu?

OP posts:
Bigearringsbigsmile · 01/03/2020 17:31

Biscuit barrels....how many " oh my God, we're all going to DIE!!!" threads do we need? They are dominating active convos. I think everyone just needs to get a bit perspective.

OP posts:
KaptenKrusty · 01/03/2020 17:31

it sucks if you are at more risk of you got sick - but me worrying about it won’t help you!

Sotiredofthislife · 01/03/2020 17:31

Glad you don’t have a diabetic, asthmatic child, OP. You might feel differently if you did. You may also feel differently if you were on a zero hours contract or in any kind of ‘don’t work, don’t get paid’ job where even short term illness means your bills don’t get paid.

userabcname · 01/03/2020 17:31

Could you not have made this astounding revelation on one of the many coronavirus threads that already exist?

Thenextstorm · 01/03/2020 17:32

Oh fgs OP 🙄

Figgygal · 01/03/2020 17:34

Agreed op it’s nonsense
I’m much more concerned about people dying due to fuel poverty, The recorded excess winter deaths in this country, the reducing life expectancy

But you can’t catch poor so the government and daily mail don’t care about that

Porpoises · 01/03/2020 17:34

It is killing more people than normal flu. Current estimate is 10 times more fatal than flu. www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/01/yes-it-is-worse-than-the-flu-busting-the-coronavirus-myths

KaptenKrusty · 01/03/2020 17:35

Your not allowed have a different opinion OP - only doom and gloom threads are acceptable 😂

chinateapot · 01/03/2020 17:35

Actually, it does seem to have a higher mortality rate than flu. So far anyway.

It’s also a virus which is new so as a population we have no immunity to it.

If a large number of the population get it simultaneously (entirely possible as no immunity) and the figures from Italy and China hold true our intensive care facilities will be under a huge amount of pressure. We may well not have enough beds for everyone who needs them. It will certainly mean cancelling all elective work.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 01/03/2020 17:35

How do you know I don't have asthmatic diabetic children?

OP posts:
FudgeBrownie2019 · 01/03/2020 17:36

YABU to not understand that not everyone has the privilege of health you apparently do.

I know a few families with immunosuppressed children and they're very much at risk from something like this. You'd be a bit of a dick if you said something like this to those families, to be honest.

IceColdCat · 01/03/2020 17:37

It is killing more people than flu (in percentage terms). Mortality rate is estimated to be 1-2%, whereas it's around 0.1% for normal flu.

Floribundance · 01/03/2020 17:37

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/01/yes-it-is-worse-than-the-flu-busting-the-coronavirus-myths

Apparently by current estimates it’s 10x as deadly as the seasonal flu

KaptenKrusty · 01/03/2020 17:37

If this virus doesn’t get ya something else will - what’s the point in panicking - is the mass panic helping to stop the virus??

Sausagewrole · 01/03/2020 17:38

I work in central London and travel around on the tube a lot, every day. I am not doing anything additional to what I wouldn’t normally do. I keep things in perspective and do my own risk assessment.

32 cases out of 60million people, I will carry on as normal.

If the cases rise significantly in the London area, I will reassess.

I will comply with any restrictions my work, or the government place on me but I won’t take it upon myself to restrict my actions over and above that.

Sotiredofthislife · 01/03/2020 17:39

If you had asthmatic diabetic children the current information about just who is/isn’t dying would concern you. It clearly doesn’t concern you so....
