Bigearringsbigsmile · 01/03/2020 17:18

I am dumbfounded by the number of people talking about not travelling, not sending children to school, stockpiling food etc etc

I'm just carrying on with normal life. Going abroad next weekend. Getting trains etc.

I dont get the hysteria.

"Don’t remember all this craziness about swine flu and that was far deadlier."

@TitaniaQoF that's simply untrue. Swine flu had a death rate of 0.01-0.08%. curiosities has an estimated death rate it 1 to 3%

Porpoises · 01/03/2020 17:59

Coronavirus not curiosities Hmm

Lycidas · 01/03/2020 18:02

@KaptenKrusty

What a twattish response this is. Of course your trip to Japan will be disrupted - they've closed all schools there for the next month and many places are like a ghost town.

tryingtoprep · 01/03/2020 18:03

YABVVU because attitudes like yours put other people at increased risk. No-one should panic but we all should be sufficiently worried that we take sensible steps to protect ourselves - and everyone around us. People in denial or with I'm Alright Jack attitudes are the ones who will spread it. Yes, we need to get on with our lives as best we can but a few temporary inconveniences and a bit of care and caution will save lives. We all can't stay at home, no, but plenty can work from home, we can temporarily ban large gatherings. It all makes a difference.

AmberAndAlexsMum · 01/03/2020 18:04

I'm diabetic, and I am not worried at the least about it. We can't change what happens so there is little point fussing about it.

MotherAughra · 01/03/2020 18:05

I have a friend whose been given her 1 months notice to leave her rented accommodation so the landlord can set it up as an isolation room.

I was slightly nervous about it but not in a "going to change any plans" kind of way, this has knocked me and made me wonder if I should be more worried !

Syrinx89 · 01/03/2020 18:06

@Lycidas I preferred reading their response to yours; very rude. No one can know for sure whether flights will be cancelled and there's nothing wrong with @KaptenKrusty wanting to carry on as normal and enjoy her life.

Foobydoo · 01/03/2020 18:07

@Bigearringsbigsmile
It is killing 10x more people than flu.
It is also several times more infectious. So if one person with flu infects ten others covid19 will infect thirty plus maybe more.
The main concern is that the NHS wont cope if everyone gets sick at once. The aim is to slow things down.
If you are low risk, carry on as normal. You may well be fine.
Many on here are high risk or have family members who are high risk.
They are quite rightly taking sensible precautions.
In a pandemic situation the young and fit will be prioritised for intensive care over those with pre existing health conditions.

Syrinx89 · 01/03/2020 18:07

@tryingtoprep You can take precautions without being "sufficiently worried"... There is a middle man! That's what I'm aiming for.

LuxLFC · 01/03/2020 18:10

I have compromised immunity & I am as scared of the flu & even getting a cold as I am of this!! A cold wiped me out last year - 1 month off work. All those who are not in such a situation should count themselves lucky instead of putting others down.

KaptenKrusty · 01/03/2020 18:13

@Lycidas what the whole country - simply not true! My friend lives there And I’m going to visit her.

Yes e schools are closed but most o Th we things are business as usual!

I’m not going for 5 weeks so we have no idea what the situation will be like then! It might be cancelled it might b fine!

At the moment all the British airways flights are still going to Japan as usual and there are no travel restrictions to t country at the minute so I don’t know how you could possibly out know that my trip will be situated to be honest

KaptenKrusty · 01/03/2020 18:15

*trip would be disrupted (autocorrect 🤦‍♀️) haha

tryingtoprep · 01/03/2020 18:16

I agree with you Syrinx 89" I think a middle ground is needed. We have to keep living our lives but equally we shouldn't take the I'm Not Worried At All So I'll take No Precautions attitude.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 01/03/2020 18:20

I'm not worried, just making sure I wash my hands a bit more often, using anti-bac gel before eating / touching my face, as I always do anyway.

Am 8 months pg so avoiding large gatherings anyway as I just want to be at home. Can't just not go to work as need to make the money before dc arrives.

GreenTulips · 01/03/2020 18:20

Those who take medication should be worried if places are closing down, parts aren’t being delivered or even manufactured

There will be a knock on effect

Cora1942 · 01/03/2020 18:21

Yes people like you dont get it.
The death rate is higher than flu but thats not the big problem.
The problem is it is a new virus , no one has immunity.
So alot of people will get ill at once.
That will overwhelm our health service and if deaths are high the cremation business.
The disruption of people not being at work will cause a big disruption to everyday life. Eg no food, no petrol etc..
Preparing or talking about Coronavirus is NOT panic. It's reasonable behaviour.
Bury your head in the sand if it makes you feel better.

ILLBESUZIE · 01/03/2020 18:23

I'm with you OP. YANBU

elastamum · 01/03/2020 18:28

Lucky you OP.

I am not worrying too much personally, but I am looking at contingencies to keep the business I work for running. We do a huge number of international meetings, some of which are already being disrupted. I am also concerned at making sure we have a continuity plan in place if we have to close one or more of our offices, what to do if people are taken ill and making sure we have the right basic precautions in place as the WHO advise. You might think this is overreacting but I have a responsibility to do this, as there are a lot of people with families who depend on their jobs with us.

Would you prefer we did nothing?

BonSoirMonCherie · 01/03/2020 18:30

You're dumbfounded by people worrying and prepping.

I'm dumbfounded by the staggering lack of critical thinking... Oh wait, we've had Brexit for the past (almost) four years, nope, nope I'm not dumbfounded by people's lack of critical thinking skills.

Lycidas · 01/03/2020 18:32

My response may be ‘rude’, but this very thread is an affront to civility tbh. Lots of people glibly carrying on as normal, despite repeatedly being told that the immunocompromised and elderly around them are very worried. ‘There may be a public health crisis, but I sure hope my little holiday isn’t disrupted.’ It just reeks of self-entitlement.

faracrossthepond · 01/03/2020 18:36

@BonSoirMonCherie

Oh don't talk such utter rot.

People who don't think like you/agree with you do not lack 'critical thinking skills...' That's such a stupid and lazy argument, and a pathetic attempt to shut down people who DARE to say things you don't agree with, and don't fall in line with the herd!

Grow up FFS.

Ozziewozzie · 01/03/2020 18:37

I tend to agree with OP. But before I’m shot down in flames, I will hasten to add that I mean no disrespect to people who would be more at risk or more at risk from complications. I really don’t think op feels privileged regarding her own health. Lots of us have immunity issues we don’t actually realise we have currently and potentially could place us at a much higher risk.

However, when comparing the Corona to the self harm many do to themselves, smoking, drinking, drugs, over/under eating...much higher proportion of related deaths, yet billions of us indulge.

Op was just asking about people’s views on, as to whether there was a general balanced perspective or more of a panic situation.

KLS02 · 01/03/2020 18:38

i haven’t been but having read this i am worried now

KaptenKrusty · 01/03/2020 18:39

It’s not actually a “little” holiday @Lycidas - I’ve been saving up for this for 2 years and it’s cost me thousands of pounds already - so sorry if I feel a bit self entitled to have my bloody holiday that I worked hard to afford - of course I’d be upset if I couldn’t go!

Ihatesundays · 01/03/2020 18:40

I’m not allowing myself to get worried until I see person to person transfer in this country. Not just individuals bringing it back from abroad.
I don’t think 32 cases in 60 million people in a month is many? Isn’t 100 the worrying number.
I just think the press have whipped us all up into a frenzy over it. It did spread fast in China, it’s not doing the same here as precautions have been taken.

I just feel like it’s deja vu with swine flu...
