This video from lovely Dr John Campbell, is very informative and in part reassuring he has suggested a lower CFR of 1% based on the figures he is constantly analysing

Here is a link to Worldometer Map for live updates

Emergency registration of health professionals who have retired

Older people are far more likely to suffer severe or critical symptoms and are far more likely to die from this virus. What sort of arsehole makes it one of the three big planks of their 'battle plan' to drag older people out of retirement and put them on the frontline against a virus that they are much less able to fight than younger generations?

Wehttam · 01/03/2020 00:54

Sleep on it and see what Monday brings and then put a plan together. Isolation is not to be taken lightly it will be very stressful so plan it well especially how to keep your DS occupied and safe. .

Keep us posted on what you decide to do. Good luck!

WitchDoc · 01/03/2020 00:57

and see what Monday brings

Monday is gonna be a shit storm, mark my words.

apricotnuts · 01/03/2020 01:02

@uwas, I got the stats from page 12 of this WHO report. www.who.int/docs/default-source/coronaviruse/who-china-joint-mission-on-covid-19-final-report.pdf

uwas · 01/03/2020 01:11

thank u, was looking all over

PumpkinPieAlibi · 01/03/2020 01:28

First death in Australia, according to Worldometer.

Defenbaker · 01/03/2020 01:56

"I'm going to have to have to completely disagree with you on this @defenbaker

It is a governments duty to protect & defend its citizens. Not shutting down flights & introducing mandatory checks on every traveller into this country at boarders makes me blame the government."

@WitchDoc

In hindsight, those measures might have helped. They probably thought it might hinder commerce and trade, and were worried about tipping the country into a recession, and being accused of scaremongering. What I meant was, this virus seems to have arisen due to illegal/unhygenic and/or cruel practices at a live meat market in China, so it can't all be blamed on our government.

Is it worth shutting the airports down for a week or two, now, and causing the financial hit to airlines and travel companies? Not being goady, just asking what you think, because I'm glad I don't have the responsibility of making these decisions and I'm unsure if it would be an overreaction and/or too late anyway. There might well be job losses and people might be aggrieved about missing out on their holidays, so the govt will no doubt be weighing all this up.

DressingGownofDoom · 01/03/2020 02:15

The cases in China have risen again. +573 today. Is this because China is returning to work? Or is it just an insignificant fluctuation in figures?

GorkyMcPorky · 01/03/2020 03:59

Can you imagine if this was actually all a hoax and it did just disappear as Trump claimed it would come April. I’d love nothing more than to have this looming black cloud shifted. To actually be excited for the summer, relish spring and be making plans for holidays. I’d actually forgive them if they just stopped it now and said sorry folks it was a hoax.

I do actually agree with you here @Wehttam.

Can't sleep worrying about how easily I caught glandular fever last summer with no apparent source. Really, really wish I could put my faith in the government to have this under control.

HasaDigaEebowai · 01/03/2020 04:29

Personally I would not be even considering going to Vietnam at the moment. In all likelihood they are significantly under reporting and the chances of you needing to quarantine upon return are high particularly since thing are moving and evolving so rapidly at the moment. Vietnam still has towns in quarantine and locked down but since the regime there is different we don't hear about it in the same way as we do in Italy.

If you haven't been to that area of the world its difficult to appreciate just how different it is. The last thing I would want is to be stuck in Vietnam/Cambodia whilst this is going on. It would not be good if you got seriously ill whilst there. We got through heaps of hand sanitiser and that was when things were "normal".

Im not trying to scaremonger - as I say I've been there myself and I took primary aged DC. But I wouldn't go at the moment if you paid me to. I think we'll see travel restrictions in the next couple of weeks anyway.

TheGirlFromStoryville · 01/03/2020 05:50

I think the government should stop all non essential air travel for the next 2 or 3 weeks or longer.
We should be given the option to take children out of school without penalty - ideal for me as a sahm - and just let them do work online - most of their homework is online so no reason why this can't be possible.
All large gatherings eg football matches, concerts, race meetings and so on should be cancelled for the time being.

Drastic measures but may help?

Story in the guardian begging people not to crystallise their loses by pulling funds out of the market.
Halifax share dealing seems to be offline. I'll try again today.
Just to put things in perspective. The markets fell 50% in the GFC. So far they have fallen 13% in the CV19 crash.
Make your own decisions, but there could be a lot further to go, and with a death in the USA, anything could happen Monday.
This could affect people's ability to retire.

MyPartInHistory · 01/03/2020 06:41

I live in commuter land in the south east. I’m wondering how many of you know what it’s like taking a train and then a tube or several tubes to get to work in London? It is packed - really, really packed. On the Northern Line, if you aren’t prepared to get up close and personal with strangers, you won’t get anywhere.

In my view, it is pretty pointless shutting down large gatherings of people when there are large gatherings of people in confined spaces on public transport every single working day.

How many people travelling from the commuter towns have been skiiing to Italy recently? I would imagine quite a few. People are talking about shutting schools, but adults have been skiing too.

CV is already here and we won’t know the extent of it for a week or so. It’s a long tail illness. We don’t know who has it until the symptoms break out.

I’m not a fan of Boris or this government, but the welfare of the population is completely intertwined with the economy. I am not at all sure that the government, at this stage, have made any wrong moves as we haven’t had any clusters yet. I certainly wouldn’t like to be making the decisions right now.

Snowdropdelight · 01/03/2020 06:46

Newjez the markets always bounce back!
It will only affect their ability if they pulled money out now.
People already retried will be affected but they shouldn't pull money out either

Snowdropdelight · 01/03/2020 06:50

My part, can't they immediately stagger working time so not everyone has to pack in for 9am.

MyPartInHistory · 01/03/2020 06:53

I don’t know snowdrop. I go ridiculously early to avoid the worst of it.

I would imagine that people who are able to work at home will start to do so. That’s not an option for me and, I would imagine, not an option for hundreds of thousands of people.

BiBiBirdie · 01/03/2020 07:00

The huge spike on numbers here this week proves that travel bans should have been in place. The cases that were here prior had been sorted and we had no active cases. Half term happens and bam, lots of people sick.
The teacher who had probably comes into contact with hundreds of people, who also come into contact with more.
Our PM is about as untrustworthy as they come, too busy shagging a gold digger and knocking her up to realise or care the country is crumbling around him. And like any of that lot give a toss, they have private health care and a bunker if need be.

GenevaMaybe · 01/03/2020 07:05

Shit is getting real over here in Geneva. My husband got a lengthy email from his office manager last night informing the team that their colleague, who lives in a small village just outside Annecy, had been placed under official quarantine along with his entire village due to a sudden diagnosis of 8 cases in the community.
So he will be out of the office for 14 days but he has been in every day last week...

VivaLeBeaver · 01/03/2020 07:09

According to bbc recently retired HCP will be asked to come back. Well as someone who recently left front line nhs work I can tell you what my answer is going to be......not in a month of Sundays!

TheGirlFromStoryville · 01/03/2020 07:13

Watched some of QT on Thurs, the founder of the Big Issue suggested the govt could take over private hospitals during the outbreak for extra beds. Has the govt considered this?

ghostlycurtains · 01/03/2020 07:15

I'm tempted with the 'it's only the flu' people to just ask whether they'd be happy to go on a two week hangout in Wuhan with a packet of lemsip...*
*
I don't think you understand what flu is.

Fridakahlofan · 01/03/2020 07:17

This isn’t meant to belittle your concerns but I think this article is useful if you are feeling anxious.

Snowdropdelight · 01/03/2020 07:19

I can't understand why people coming back through airports and regions weren't simply told to stay away from schools and work for 2 weeks with anyone in that position to be allowed sick leave with Proof.

Allowing people from infected areas mingle.... What does anyone expect!
This is what I can't understand.

In an office of about 22, 2 people went to the infected areas. Not precisely but will have used same airports.

Ie not a huge amount of staff across any business will have gone to northern Italy etc. So why not ask them to stay away!

Business can carry on, we could have brought more time. Why didn't they include airports?

Stagger working hours, allow people Togo in earlier or later. Those that can should be allowed to self isolate at home eg sahm with school age dc.
