This video from lovely Dr John Campbell, is very informative and in part reassuring he has suggested a lower CFR of 1% based on the figures he is constantly analysing

I'm scared that DS will screw up his GCSEs if the schools are closed, sigh. Not sure how to plan for that one. Frustrating.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 08:13

Checking in

Jenasaurus · 29/02/2020 08:14

Maybe they should postpone the exams to give students additional study time, or alternatively do online interactive classes. Also an allowance could be made to those affected with along time in quarantine or isolation

interestingly different vote outcome on this thread to the others, the last one was clearly not being unreasonable to be worried, this one is the opposite

It’s so difficult at the moment because the effects of quarantine are just as scary

AvocadoOwl · 29/02/2020 08:16

Checking in, thanks for the new thread!

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 08:17

They will definitely put something in place if it comes to GCSE disruption. You won't need to plan for it the school will sort that. It's not in the governments interest to have all the current year 11s leaving school with no GCSEs

Jenasaurus · 29/02/2020 08:18

That's OK AvocadoOwl I am alone a lot of the time and this thread has been really helpful in keeping me updated, in particular Ofwarrens updates have been really informative.

I wouldn't worry about GCSEs either, though I can understand why you would. I saw in one paper speculation that perhaps they'd do things like adjusting pass marks to account for it. I think they do something like this anyway each year? At least, that's what I was told when I was at school!

Jenasaurus · 29/02/2020 08:20

Part of me just wants to hibernate until summer and hope its all over then

Had just been discussing USA and insurance on old thread. Lots of Americans don’t have insurance. They’re going to have a massive problem if they don’t make testing and treatment free for those who don’t have insurance.

Jenasaurus · 29/02/2020 08:22

My niece was in an accident on the run up to her A Levels, and as a result missed lots of study time, she was given her grades based on her previous coursework (got A* too) so if that's anything to go by, maybe that's what they will have to do here as well.

Washington state high school student who tested positive for coronavirus was feeling better this morning and attempted to return to school. Then positive result came in, student was notified, and went home before attending class.

(from WA state press conference)

lljkk · 29/02/2020 08:22

DS will end up sitting the GCSE exams but without the intense revision period they usually get for 6-9 weeks before, if the schools will close. He lacks the self-discipline to revise at home. I'm not going to be able to pick up all that slack, and he wouldn't be amenable to me trying anyway. So he will do quite badly without that intense structured revision period.

I dunno if his self-discipline is really that much worse than most kids, so maybe if they grade everything on a distribution he'll come out ok after all. Fair enough. At least math can be done with online exercises.

I haven't had option to vote on any AIBU thread for ages, I think MN turned voting off for me. Which is fine, really :).

Jenasaurus · 29/02/2020 08:23

Do you know how expensive the tests are in USA? Just wondering if we are talking £1000 or £15. I would also think its in the countries interest to offer free testing.

Travel insurance. Does any exist that would actually cover cancellation due to pandemic? Even if there was am I right in thinking it's too late now anyway because it's known?

QueenofmyPrinces · 29/02/2020 08:28

I feel so overwhelmed by it all.

My husband and sons came back from Malta last week and in the last few days my husband has felt shivery and achy, he and one of my sons have god cold sores, one of my sons has had a sore throat for 24 hours (needing medicine) and now we are all sneezing.

How are we supposed to know what’s just a normal cold or whether we need to be concerned??

copperstrike76 · 29/02/2020 08:29

@lljkk I think they do grade based on distribution anyway. For example, if they decide that the top grade is 80% or whatever and nobody gets that, they will adjust the boundaries downwards I think.

Can understand why you are concerned, but I bet there will be plenty others in the same situation.

I'm hoping that concerts might be cancelled next week, but I'm not holding out much hope. DH is due to go to the 6 Music festival in London and he will get drunk and probably not as careful as he should be. He thinks it's all a storm in a teacup anyway, which would be fine if his behaviour only affected him, but there's me and DD in this house as well! And funnily enough, when it comes to flu it's almost always him that gets affected and brings it home (hence me getting the vax last year!)...

BackInTime · 29/02/2020 08:29

Funny how in Pandemic type movies you never see people who are concerned about health insurance just hero medics and scientists rushing around trying to save the world.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 08:30

They wouldn't test you even if you wanted Queen because you haven't been in one of the notifiable areas. This is going to backfire massively.

MyFavouriteColourIsBlue · 29/02/2020 08:31

Yeah, reality is rather different. Sad

Is there a way of ‘watching’ a thread without making a comment? Each time a new thread starts, I struggle to find it for a while. I don’t really want to make a worthless comment for the sake of it - though realise I have just done so 😂
