Is anyone stock piling yet for coronavirus. I got a few bottles of Calpol this afternoon and some ibuprofen but wondering if I should stock kitchen cupboards. Daily Mail is getting me into a panic !!

I've also started bulk making meals and freezing them - DD has some fish pie (DH and I are vegetarian) and today I'm making a huge lentil and potato curry so will freeze that and have with rice.

Regardless of if we need to isolate or not, it's not wasted - we'll still eat it all and I always try to have freezer stash anyway just for ease (although if I've been rubbish of late!)

FlamingoAndJohn · 29/02/2020 07:48

Are you being deliberately obtuse?
They cant deliver if they have it themselves though can they?
They cant deliver if thier JIT stock system runs out if they cannot get supplies in.

That is rather assuming that the entire country is effected, rather than just individuals isolating at home.

bellinisurge · 29/02/2020 07:49

No it isn't. Doesn't take much pressure in local areas to put pressure on supplies in that area.

ScribblyGum · 29/02/2020 07:59

GrinGrin at the poster who has bought a new pair of pjs. Brilliant Grin

HasaDigaEebowai · 29/02/2020 08:06

None of the doctors I work with are doing this,

fuck off daily mail - my close friend is an A&E consultant. She is worried, She has both stockpiled food and essential supplies and has masks at home for the family - fuck off daily mail (and check the meaning of my username before you quote me)

bellinisurge · 29/02/2020 08:09

Actually @ScribblyGum , new pjs are a good moral booster. Everyone gets cheered up by different things but inexpensive things that cheer you up are a good idea.

I am thinking to look for some Corona beer.

HasaDigaEebowai · 29/02/2020 08:32

The close proximity for 15 minutes thing has been debunked now. It’s passed mainly through droplets eg coughs sneezes etc plus touch and transmission via surfaces and some fecal transmission. There is not thought to be massive aerosol risk (ie it’s not typically just floating about). But the 15 minutes contact is not necessary for transmission. It can be one cough

I posted this last night. The Public Health England website now confirms that the virus is airborne.

It says this -
COVID-19 is classified as an airborne high consequence infectious disease (HCID) in the UK.

Mummyoftwo91 · 29/02/2020 08:47

@HasaDigaEebowai not daily mail, I've been on here for years you saddo lol

HasaDigaEebowai · 29/02/2020 09:00

Mummyoftwo91 You may be of the generation who thinks that everything is about them but why on earth do you think Im talking to you when I put "fuck off daily mail"?

The daily mail are coming onto MN and cut and pasting the threads onto their website. I'd rather not be quoted in the daily mail.

You do realise that even if you have to self isolate you can either shop online, or get someone to do the shopping for you, and leave it on your doorstep? I really don't understand all this panic buying, it's mad

Not occurred to you that your friends or the drivers or the pickers may well be ill or self isolated? I just don't get why you wouldn't get in a few extra bags of rice, loo roll etc if you can afford to.

Scunnnnnered · 29/02/2020 09:35

Sick of the scaremongering. Mumsnet is the worst for it. People really need to get their anxiety checked out.

Reluctantbettlynch · 29/02/2020 09:38

Panic buying will take out the supply chain faster than self isolation / corona virus as it is putting so much pressure on it.
People literally need to calm down, apply logic and follow nhs advice - increased & thorough hand washing etc. The media are such shit stirrers.
Nobody wants corona virus, but the panic is getting out of hand very early in UK.

ManonBlackbeak · 29/02/2020 09:46

I agree Scunnnered, in real life I don’t know anyone who’s as worried as they are on here. I think a lot of posters on here need to get a grip and calm down. It’s not a pandemic until the WHO declare it one, and until the government start closing places down, close the borders etc I’m not going to worry.

TheMammothHunters · 29/02/2020 09:47

I have bought DS birthday Lego early to put in the loft so if we get stuck in the house we have something to do. Priorities!

I already had 2 full freezers and a cupboard full of tins and pasta (Brexit).
I’ve made sure we’re ok for soap, loo roll, cleaning stuff and over the counter medicines like calpol and lemsip.
I have a couple of spare inhalers and all our prescription medicines are up to date.
I have a few alcohol hand gels to use when I get the train and when I get back into the car etc. I wash my hands on arrival at work/ home.

The hand sanitizer thing is most ridiculous of all! The best thing for good hygiene is washing hands with soap and warm water. All hand gel does is try your hands out and make them sore. It’s definitely not as good as soap speaking from experience.

I tried to get some normal things today. Elbow grease and hand wash. Wanted another hand foam for my child's school days. Mainly for norovirus protection. Couldn't get any as all out of stock. People are panicking!!?

Purely to be sensible I've got an extra large bag of pasta, a few tins and large bottles of water and 2 bottles of long life milk incase we get trapped at home. Can't really see it happening at the moment.

I think people are scared of the unknown with this one. But school trips have happened. Kids have been allowed to go to school as they were 100 miles from the site. But they still had to go into the airports and toilets etc on the way home.

I'd say buy things because everyone else is going to be on a mad panic. I hope this becomes yesterday's news soon.

Hahaha88 · 29/02/2020 10:07

@HasaDigaEebowai because they couldn't possibly just not include the "fuck of daily mail" right? 🤦🏻‍♀️

Are you planning on staying beside a sink for the foreseeable future? The rest of us have jobs to go to!

HasaDigaEebowai · 29/02/2020 10:10

Too much effort for them apparently. They are literally screenshotting the pages and quotes

Hahaha88 · 29/02/2020 10:10

I think it makes sense to get a few extra necessities in, Loo rolls, pasta and sauces, canned goods etc and medicine. But there's no need to go overboard. People shouldn't be relying on friends or family coming to drop them groceries or keeping their fingers crossed the supermarket can still offer deliveries.
